10/31/03
Station 4 Investigated the microbarometer's reponse to the different "12 VDC"
PAM battery = 13.8 VDC microbarom response = ~ 6 VDC
Licor battery = 12 VDC microbarom response = ~ 1.3 VDC
Hence we gave up on PAM power and attached the recharged Licor battery
Tightened all rain guage connections
Prop boom 000.5 degrees (Tony), 177.0 degrees (Gordon)
Sonic boom 90.2 degrees (Tony), 90.0 degrees (Gordon)
Station 3 Removed dead microbarom battery and replaced with charged battery
Cleaned radiometers and performed shadow test 1345 - 1400
Prop boom = 180 degrees (Gordon)
Sonic boom = 89 degrees (Gordon)
Station 6 INSTALLED BAROMETER GORDON
Prop boom = 3.8 degrees (Tony)
Sonic boom = 92.5 degrees (Tony)

Station 1
Removed vaisala barometer U4110004, replaced it with
S0610002. Changed barometer serial port to parity=even,
7 data bits in fmt0164. Seen logbook entry #160 for info
about the barometers.
All Campbell connection associated with the rainguage as well as the
rain guage connections were tightened. Tip response on logger checked
Station 9
Installed barometer U4110004. It worked, but then the TRH and
AD would not transmit on the SBUS (prop continued to work).
Swapped the internal RS485 circuit board from unit NCAR0003,
and then all sensors were happy.
All Campbell .................................. on logger checked.
The microbarometer dead battery was replaced with a freshly charged one
The datascope was calibrated sucessfully ans a magnetic declination of
14 west was entered.
Prop boom: 354.0 degrees (Tony) 352.6 degrees (Gordon)
Sonic boom: 86.6 degrees (Tony) 87.0 degrees (Gordon)
Station 4
Removed barometer S0610003 (in order to move it at 6).
Installed NCAR0003 (parity=even,7 bits) (without an
internal RS485 circuit board.
The barometer air hose was not connected at this station!
System date was wrong on this station, it was reporting 10/28.
Looking at the minicom logs, I found I (Gordon) had set it
incorrectly on Oct 24. The incorrect date does not
effect the GOES data (NESDIS sets the time tag), but it
does effect the local metppf files and the high rate data.
I have corrected the metppf files - still need to do the
high rate data.
All Campbell .................................... on logger checked.
The microbarometer dead battery was removed. A direct "12 VDC" linkage
from the PAM battery resulted in an "over maximum" voltage output to
the AD. The attempt to power the micobarometer was abandoned.

Station 1 was visited to shadow test uplooking radiometers 0945 - 0955
Also because of the ongoing noise/data cut-outs the rewired TRH/Everest
installation was removed and a simple TRH installed
THR 101 removed and TRH 007 installed. Everest Tsfc no attached.
Will rely on down looking pyrg.
GOES attenna moved to pole at 0943
Station 8 was visited to check rain guage. Water drip calibration done
Ground wire inside Campbell was loose. Tightened and then another
water drip calibration done.
Station 2 was visited to shadow test uplooking radiometers: ~1245 1255

- 134: Rain, Site 1, Sun 19-Oct-2003 09:05:41 EDT, st1: RG check
10/18/03 13:05-13:40
Purpose: check RG which appeared to have 'delayed tips' in
comparison with other stations.
RG was clean and seemed alright.
Performed tip-test at a 'fast-rate':
13:20 = 59 tips
13:25 = 27 tips
total = 86 out of 100: ie very low although I did
have it running so fast that this undershoot was
clearly related to splashing.
Basic point is RG is working.

H2o Fuel Cell check
2080psi, used 540psi in 4-1/4 days
GOES ant moved to West Leg
I think this may be worse for noise on the Trh.
We need a longer cable to move if further.
- 115: Site_visit, Site 1, Mon 13-Oct-2003 16:56:21 EDT, St1: Fuel Cell powering station, routine
10/13/03 11:15-12:00 local
Purpose: Startup station on fuel cell, routine.
Hydrogen fuel cell tested. The fuel cell had failed previously when S.O.
had installed it. It was first tested with a 2.1 W dummy load, three 0.7 W fans
in parallel. The cell ran without problem. At 11:44 the station was switched to
hydrogen fuel cell power, feeding through the power regulator to three
batteries. Vbatt=12.9, Ic=2.6, Il=.9
H2 cylinder Pressures 2620 psi / 20 psi
Radiometers were cleaned
KrH2O = 0.65, so mast not lowered for Kr cleaning
RG is OK

Site 1 visit, Oct 8, SPO
Purpose: install format 164; test baro; fix krypton signal
Arrived ~1100 EDT
Tested voltage response of baro by disconnecting solar/aux batteries.
When Vbatt<12.9V, no response to polling (on separate port 6).
Changed to fmt0164.dat; initially failed AD with too many %d -- fixed.
New format still has voltage problem for baro -- reconnected panels&batteries.
Swapped serializer to try to fix krypton -- no change.
Swapped Tsfc&Krypton to test if krypton voltage/serializer okay.
Krypton was fine.
Found blown fuse on front panel -- replaced -- now krypton works! But...
when Tsfc reconnected to SOAD channel 5 now reads 250C (offscale).
Swapped back with krypton. Krypton ok on SOAD chan 5 and Tsfc ok on serializer!
(But not the reverse.)
Tried Tsfc on SOAD chan 6 -- works! Something is strange (now) with either
front panel or pigtail cable for chan 5 -- it had been working before this
service visit :(
Since this already used a unique config, changed fmt0164 to accept Tsfc on
chan 6, defined "Junk" on chan 5. Now things work.
Departed ~1300 [two hours to change a format and replace a blown fuse :( ]
Conclusion:
- This baro (1003?) is the worst -- it doesn't like Vbatt<12.9V on either
SBus or port 6.
- The krypton that we pulled from this site a few days ago (1101) might be okay
(despite giving no voltage in the trailer -- perhaps still a fuse problem?)
- The serializer that I just swapped probably is okay as well.
- Changing to format 164 was good, but didn't affect station operation.
