This guide contains instructions for operating the ISS workstation computer. This chapter simply provides some of the basics for understanding and using the system, including information about the ISS software itself, the UNIX operating system running the workstation, and the graphical window interface.
In this document, text which is printed by the computer is in plain typewriter font. Text which is entered by the operator appears in bold typewriter font. Here is an example:
hello> greetings |
The hello> prompt is printed by the computer and shows that the computer is ready for you to type a command at the prompt. The word greetings is what is typed by the operator.
Programs and commands appear like program and command. Graphical menu names appear as menu and button. Filenames look like filename, and names of symbols or other concepts are printed like symbol.
When you type characters into the ISS computer, the character case is significant. You should keep the keyboard caps lock off at all times and type commands in exactly the same case as shown in this document. This is very different from most PC programs (DOS and Windows) where the case is not usually important, and the caps lock is often kept on. |
