275: Status, Site 5, Thu 20-Jun-2002 20:20:41 CDT, Site 5 Harvested
6/20 17:30 Local

The site was being harvested at that time by 5 combines which were
circling in on the station.
These puppies were kicking up quite a bit of chaff into the air.
Darn it, the camera battery was dead so I couldn't take photos :-(

Decided not to visit the site at this time. Harvesting should
have been completed by perhaps 0Z maybe.
272: Status, Site 6, Thu 20-Jun-2002 11:48:45 CDT, Harvest at sites 5 & 6
The wheat at site 6 was harvested about 3 days ago. This
seems to correspond with the change in wind speed difference
between the sonic and the prop.

Below is additional information from Tom:

Tom spoke with Melva Andra today (June 20) by telephone to ask when the
wheat had been harvested at site 6. She talked with Ken or Bryan by
radio and he replied that it had been harvested 2-3 days ago and seemed
to settle on 3 days ago, which would be Monday, June 17. According to
our logbook, the last visit we made to the site was on June 12. If
Joe/Josh/Heather visited site 6 on June 17-19, it would be valuable to
know whether or not the wheat had been harvested when they were there.

Reply from Joe:

Heather and I were at site 6 on June 19 and it had been harvested. When
I spoke to the landowner on the 14th, he said that due to the rain on
that day, they would have to wait 3 days to harvest the field. That
would place the harvest on the 17th which would correspond with the
date given to you.

As for site 5, it had not been cut when we where there yesterday (June
19) but they were working in the adjacent fields, so I would expect it
to be harvested today, or at the very least within the next few weeks.
This would also be in line with what the land owner told me last week.
At that time, he expected to harvest within the next week or ten days,
but could not be more specific.

172: Status, Site , Fri 31-May-2002 22:42:56 CDT, Daily Status
Abbreviated status late Friday, May 31:

The ISFF crew (Oncley & Delany) will be in transit to stations 1-3 tomorrow
and plan to return Sunday. If Sunday's report is missing, it won't be because
we're loafing!

Visits on Friday (a full day!):
- s6: clean krypton, download data, check GOES interference, turn off GOES
- s5: verified that GOES transmitter was switched off
- s4: download data, check GOES interference, fixed krypton interference,
      turn off GOES
- s7: download data, check GOES interference, fixed GOES interference!!
- s8: download data (both), check GOES interference, fixed GOES interference,
fixed bad radiometer fan, replaced prop assembly

Anomolies:
GOES transmission from s4-6 are now turned off and will remain this way until
Sunday or Monday. This is intentional to avoid interference of the analog
data (specifically krypton hygrometer and surface temperature) by the GOES
data transmitter. ALL DATA CONTINUE TO BE ARCHIVED ON SITE, so no data should
be lost.
We now know the fix for this problem -- better shielding in our data system
boxes -- and have implemented this fix on s7&8. Thus, GOES data from s8 should
now be back. (Though I see that reception of GOES data in Boulder died this
afternoon.) We will apply this fix at s1-3 tomorrow.

We know of a bad radiometer for outgoing visible radiation at s1 which is
probably a cable problem. We also know that the incoming infrared radiation
at s2 is odd at times. We plan to work on both of these problems tomorrow.

We know that water vapor fluxes reported at least at s7-9, are low. Our best
guess is a problem with the calibrations being used for these sensors. This
is our second-highest priority and will be our highest by Monday.

We have an ongoing problem with noise on the soil moisture profile sensors,
despite the efforts of many people. This is a low priority for us since
Richard Cuenca thinks that the data are still useful. Nevertheless, we will
try one more fix tomorrow, if we have time.

163: Status, Site , Wed 29-May-2002 23:44:02 CDT, thoughts about GOES problem
After talking with Steve Semmer, Tom, and Gordon today, there were several
thoughts:

Gordon: The error should be quantified, even if we fix it, for historical
purposes.
	a. This can be done manually (tedious and error prone)
	b. This can be done using mincom.cap (not all samples on serializer)
	c. This could be done using the "spare" SDR unit, but would have to
at least slightly modify the station config to enable the SDR
	   (using an unused port 5?)
	d. We should look at the high-rate data from s1 and s8 to see if the
error is constant, constant for each station, or varies with time.
	e. If it depends on the position of the antenna, only option "b" is
available now for s7 [and I'll have to put the minicom.cap file
           someplace!]

Steve: Since the problem goes away with the dummy RF load, it may be possible to
eliminate the problem by relocating the antenna (using a longer RF cable
which Steve doesn't think will be a problem) and/or by changing back to
the yagi antennae (we should have a complete set of spares)

Tom: The error in a flux due to a step change theoretically is zero. (He says
I should work it out myself.)

Me: Although I agree with all of the above, especially Steve's idea that the
problem should be fixed, rather than worked around, I still think that
figuring out a new configuration that transmits a short message only every
hour would be useful -- especially if it takes a while to track down the
correct solution. On the other hand, it would only take one more visit back
to s7 to try our best solution (a yagi far away).

30: Status, Site 1, Fri 03-May-2002 22:55:21 MDT, Site 1 update
Finished setting up site one. John found a faulty
barometer that was causing problems on the SBUS.
Kurt had to make some mechanical changes to the tripod
in order for the wench tool to work correctly.
He also took care of the AC power.
The radiation stand was moved from its original
placement yesterday. It was moved ~7 meters to the
west. It is now overlooking plowed soil. The profile
boxes are to the east. Profile 2, box 5, is due east ~8
meters. Profile 0, box 11, is northeast ~3 meters. Profile
1, box 7, is southeast ~3 meters. Time was spent shoveling the
soil near the darkhorse to get it representative of the
site. It is recommended that the same thing be done to the
remaining soil around the profile boxes.
The rain gauge was installed in the middle of the triangle
created by the profile boxes.

28: Status, Site 1, Thu 02-May-2002 20:50:09 MDT, setup site 1
Started setting station 1 up late in the day.
The tripod and radiation stand are up. Tomorrow
we will finish the installation. Information for
today.

NOTE: the radiation stand is centered between
the 3 profiles. Profile 11 is north of the northwest
leg. Profile 7 is south of the southwest leg. Profile
5 is next to the northeast leg.

27: Status, Site 3, Thu 02-May-2002 20:45:06 MDT, setup of site 3
Site 3 installed today. Here is some additional information
about the site.
Sonic serial number: 0536
Sonic height: 2.7 m
Sonic angle: 94 degrees
Krypton serial number: 13-489
Prop serial number: 00245
Prop angle: 185 degrees
Tsfc serial number: 357
TRH serial number: 004
profile box: 4
radiation height: 2.1 m

The radiation stand is along a 230-240 degree angle from
the tripod. A 15m cable was used to get to a representative
site. The profile box along with the rain gauge are northeast
of the darkhorse between the tripod and darkhorse.

26: Status, Site 2, Wed 01-May-2002 22:05:24 MDT, rain test
During setup, a rain test was made. The bucket
was tipped ~10 times. So any rain event during setup
is false data.

25: Status, Site 2, Wed 01-May-2002 21:22:16 MDT, Site 2 setup
Site 2 was setup today. Here is some additional
information about the site.
Sonic serial number - 538
Sonic height - 3.43 m
Sonic angle - 85 degrees
Krypton serial number - 1133
Radiation stand height - 2.14 m
Everest serial number - 3389-3
Wind Prop/Vane serial number - 35500
profile box number - 6
TRH serial number - 005

TWH added the following from an email from SRS:

We had to make a few changes to the layout at site 2.

(1) The angle from the tripod to the rad stand is 230 degrees. At 240
degrees, the mast in a down position was close to the dark horse so we
moved the dark horse more toward the south.

(2) The rain gauge, due to cable length, is about 2 meters due east of
the profile box.

(3) The profile box is 4 meters due NNW, 335 degrees, of the west leg
 of the dark horse.
