The surface roughness can be calculated, for neutral stability, as zo = (z2-z1)/[exp(k*u2/ustar) - exp(k*u1/ustar)] where z1,u1 are height and wind speed for the sonic anemometer, z2 and u2 are for the propvane at 10m, k=0.4, and ustar is the friction velocity measured by the sonic anemometer. I calculated this for each station for the duration of the project and found zo as the median value within the stability range abs(3m/L) < 0.002, where L is the Monin-Obukhov stability length calculated from ustar andmeasured by the sonic anemometer. The derived values are: site zo (cm) 1 0.24 2 2.4 3 2.9 4 1.1 5 5.9 6 4.9 7 2.3 8 1.8 9 1.2 Note that zo for sites 5 and 6 include data from both before and after wheat harvest. Note that site 6 was plowed on June 24, which would have reduced zo to a value on the order of that for site 1.
The displacement height was first calculated from the wind profiles for neutral stability: D = z1 - (z2-z1)/(exp((u2-u1)*k/ustar) - 1) where z1,u1 are the height and wind speed for the sonic, z2 and u2 are for the prop vane at 10 m, k=0.4, and ustar is the friction velocity. Unfortunately these values of D are unrealistic. As an alternative, the displacement height was determined as 2/3 the height of the vegetation, using the periodic measurements made by Joe, Josh and Heather. For each site visit, I averaged all of the available vegetation measurements at locations 1-11. The results are as follows: # # date (GMT) displacement height # stns: 1 2002 may 01 00:00:00 0.0 2002 jun 30 00:00:00 0.0 # stns: 2 2002 may 01 00:00:00 0.07 2002 may 20 00:00:00 0.07 2002 may 29 00:00:00 0.08 2002 jun 8 00:00:00 0.06 2002 jun 15 00:00:00 0.09 2002 jun 27 00:00:00 0.12 2002 jun 30 00:00:00 0.12 # stns: 3 2002 may 01 00:00:00 0.27 2002 may 21 00:00:00 0.27 2002 may 29 00:00:00 0.29 2002 jun 9 00:00:00 0.23 2002 jun 17 00:00:00 0.27 2002 jun 27 00:00:00 0.29 2002 jun 30 00:00:00 0.29 # stns: 4 2002 may 01 00:00:00 0.11 2002 may 22 00:00:00 0.11 2002 may 30 00:00:00 0.14 2002 jun 6 00:00:00 0.18 2002 jun 12 00:00:00 0.16 2002 jun 23 00:00:00 0.24 2002 jun 30 00:00:00 0.24 # stns: 5 2002 may 01 00:00:00 0.47 2002 may 22 00:00:00 0.47 2002 may 28 00:00:00 0.46 2002 jun 06 00:00:00 0.45 2002 jun 12 00:00:00 0.43 # harvest on June 20 2002 jun 20 10:00:00 0.43 2002 jun 21 00:00:00 0.16 # 2002 jun 24 00:00:00 0.16 2002 jun 30 00:00:00 0.16 # stns: 6 2002 may 01 00:00:00 0.43 2002 may 17 00:00:00 0.43 2002 may 26 00:00:00 0.40 2002 jun 06 00:00:00 0.41 # harvest on June 17 2002 jun 17 10:00:00 0.41 2002 jun 18 00:00:00 0.17 # 2002 jun 19 00:00:00 0.17 # plowed on June 24 2002 jun 24 18:00:00 0.17 2002 jun 24 21:20:00 0.00 2002 jun 30 00:00:00 0.00 # stns: 7 2002 may 01 00:00:00 0.19 2002 may 25 00:00:00 0.19 2002 jun 01 00:00:00 0.23 2002 jun 15 00:00:00 0.29 2002 jun 20 00:00:00 0.31 2002 jun 30 00:00:00 0.31 # stns: 8 2002 may 01 00:00:00 0.17 2002 may 16 00:00:00 0.17 2002 jun 01 00:00:00 0.19 2002 jun 14 00:00:00 0.24 2002 jun 20 00:00:00 0.23 2002 jun 30 00:00:00 0.23 # stns: 9 2002 may 01 00:00:00 0.09 2002 may 16 00:00:00 0.09 2002 jun 01 00:00:00 0.15 2002 jun 14 00:00:00 0.07 2002 jun 20 00:00:00 0.21 2002 jun 30 00:00:00 0.21
I can't find any way to recover the missing data at station 9, on Jun 9. I've added 5 hours to the time tags of all variables from 12:55 to 16:15 CDT, so that they are now tagged as 17:55 to 21:15 CDT. So now what we're missing is 12:45 to 17:50 CDT. Gordon See logbook entry 233. TWH
Yesterday, we reset the GOES and RTC clocks on stations 7-9. I must have done something wrong (entered local time rather than GMT?) at 9, since the data from yesterday from about 11-16 CDT appear to really be the data from 16-21 CDT (5 hours different -- the difference between CDT and GMT). The problem appears to have fixed itself at 21 CDT (02 Z). 9/30/02: As near as I can tell from the data, the time offset error began at 12:45 CDT (17:45 GMT) June 9 and was correct after 21:20 CDT (02:20 GMT, June 10). At several sites, especially s6 and also s5, there has been ongoing rain indicated which we don't think can be real. I've attached a plot showing that for a 3-day period of clear skies over the entire state that accumulations of up to 8mm of rain were indicated. There doesn't appear to be a good correlation with wind speed. I would guess electronic noise is the source, but haven't tried to isolate this.
On May 17, I contacted the land owners to give them our telephone number. I also requested the owners of the winter wheat sites, 5 and 6, to let us know when the wheat will be/is harvested. Site 1: Talked to Brad Shultz and offered to move the power cable, if necessary, when his renter planted milo at this site. Brad did not expect the power cable to be a problem. Site 2: Left voice mail for Gary Tice Site 3: Talked to Dwain McFarland's mother-in-law Site 4: Left voice mail for Jeff Ryan. He called back later that day. Site 5: Sent email to Cleyon Yowell. Offered to meet him at the site for a tour and requested to be contacted re wheat harvest. Site 6: Left voice mail for Ken Andra. Saw him at the site May 18 and gave him url for web page. Site 7: Talked to Nancy Wilson Site 8: Talked to Mrs. Bannon May 19. Site 9: Sent email to David Burdette
