326: LOG, Site all, Fri 15-Nov-2002 09:50:55 MST, roughness length
The surface roughness can be calculated, for neutral stability, as

zo = (z2-z1)/[exp(k*u2/ustar) - exp(k*u1/ustar)]

where z1,u1 are height and wind speed for the sonic anemometer, z2 and
u2 are for the propvane at 10m, k=0.4, and ustar is the friction
velocity measured by the sonic anemometer. I calculated this for each
station for the duration of the project and found zo as the median
value within the stability range abs(3m/L) < 0.002, where L is the
Monin-Obukhov stability length calculated from ustar and
measured by the sonic anemometer.

The derived values are:

site	zo (cm)
1	0.24
2	2.4
3	2.9
4	1.1
5	5.9
6	4.9
7	2.3
8	1.8
9	1.2

Note that zo for sites 5 and 6 include data from both before and after
wheat harvest.
Note that site 6 was plowed on June 24, which would have reduced zo
to a value on the order of that for site 1.

325: LOG, Site all, Fri 15-Nov-2002 09:28:14 MST, displacement height
The displacement height was first calculated from the wind profiles
for neutral stability:

D = z1 - (z2-z1)/(exp((u2-u1)*k/ustar) - 1)

where z1,u1 are the height and wind speed for the sonic, z2 and u2
are for the prop vane at 10 m, k=0.4, and ustar is the friction
velocity. Unfortunately these values of D are unrealistic.

As an alternative, the displacement height was determined as 2/3
the height of the vegetation, using the periodic measurements made
by Joe, Josh and Heather. For each site visit, I averaged all of
the available vegetation measurements at locations 1-11. The results
are as follows:

320: Soil, Site all, Thu 19-Sep-2002 16:30:30 MDT, CS615 in-situ calibrations
I have calculated a linear fit for the Trime volumetric water content
data (Qsoil, % volumetric water content) versus CS615 output period
(Qtsoil, msec) for each site, Qsoil = a + b*Qtsoil. The Trime data
were collected manually during periodic site visits. The data used for
the fits also include CS615 data collected in the laboratory, both
before and after the field project, with the CS615 inserted into a
container of glass beads. The total number of data points in each fit
ranges from 5 to 7.

Note that the response of the CS615 at site 1, s/n 001, appears to
have shifted significantly around 19:40 CDT 6/20/02 and a different
calibration (1b) is used for data after that time.

In the following table, rms is the root-mean-square of the residuals
of the linear fit (% volumetric water content)

315: GOES, Site all, Mon 08-Jul-2002 13:16:03 CDT, GOES-Noise Tests in Boulder
Some of the high-rate 'shield-off' test files were not recorded
properly in the field so I re-ran them in the lab for
stations 3,5,9; sonic/krypton used were the same units as the
stations had at teardown. Note station 9's uw was running at 10hz.
A generic IRT #3577-2 and trh-005 were added in addition to the baro.
Hopefully this will be sufficient to analyze the noise.

See entry #265 for file lists.

The rain tips in the central and eastern network where man made.

251: CO2, Site all, Sun 16-Jun-2002 11:02:30 CDT, CO2 calibration gas cylinder pressures
The pressure in the CO2 cal gas cylinders have been monitored over the past
several weeks to monitor the usage.

26 Jun''02 1900 --- 2100 1050 1920

The primary regulator pressure indicated is not an extremely reliable indicator
of the amount of gas in the cylinder, as the guages are not very accurate and
as the pressure varies with tank temperature. However, there is the indication
that the usage of cal gas is very low.

249: Radiation, Site all, Sat 15-Jun-2002 16:05:45 CDT, Sun shadow tests
Sun shadow tests were carried out on all incoming short-wave radiometers
and low-wave radiometers. Using a ~5 cm Al foil disc mounted on a 30 cm rod
the shadow of the sun was imposed upon the radiometer disc. This prevented
the contribution of direct solar radiation but only slightly impeded the
contribution of the full sky radiation.

While the tests were being carried out, the data system was set to acquire
5 second data. This data was captured in a designared file.
The shadow was held on the short-wave radiometer disc for 60 seconds and then
while the short-wave radiometer recovered the shadow was held on the long-wave
radiometer disc. The procedure was repeated several times.

The tests were carried out when there was clear sky. Some of the following tests
were under non-ideal conditions

Site 1: Thu, at 17:00 - 17:30, 6 Jun''02, s1l.020606 clear sky
Site 2: Thu, at 18:30 - 18:50, 6 Jun''02, STEVE O? clear sky
Site 3: Fri, at 10:10 - 10:30, 7 Jun''02, STEVE O? clear sky
Site 4: Fri, at 16:20 - 16:40, 7 Jun''02, STEVE O? clear sky
Site 5: Fri, at 16:50 - 17:00, 7 Jun''02, STEVE O? clear sky
Site 6: Fri, at 17:50 - 18:00, 7 Jun''02, STEVE O? clear sky
Site 7: Sat, at 13:15 - 13:25, 8 Jun''02, s7l.020608 sky somewhat cloudy
Site 8: Sat, at 14:10 - 14:20, 8 Jun''02, STEVE O? not a clear sky
Site 9: Sat, at 15:30 - 15:50, 8 Jun''02, STEVE O? scattered clouds, no good

192: Fast_KH2O, Site all, Tue 04-Jun-2002 18:25:14 CDT, Cleaning Kr electronic box connectors
The problem with the Kr appears to be water impacting on the outside of the
case, running down the grooves in the case extrusion and then seeping into the
box where it stands and corrodes the connectors.
We are retreiving all Kr boxes, disassembling the connectors, cleaning the
metal and using new connectors reassembling
The Kr electronics boxes are to be mounted on the mast, inside plastic
tupperware containers, hopefully to prevent any water from wetting even
the outside of the electronics boxes.
On Tues, 4 Jun''02 Kr electronic boxes were recovered from sites 7, 8 and 9.
These were opened and the corrossion clean out and new six pin connectors
installed. (TO BE REINSTALLED ON WED 5 JUN PM)

On Wed, 5 Jun''02 Kr electronic boxes were recovered from sites 4, 5 and 6.
These were opened and it was discovered that previous Peel and Seal treatment
had been quite sucessfull. There was no corrossion although the box from
Station 6, Kr 1397 did have some liquid water in it. On Wed PM these boxes
were resealed. (TO BE REINSTALLED ON THU6 JUN PM)

142: LOG, Site all, Sun 26-May-2002 13:32:36 CDT, Contacted land owners, 5/17
On May 17, I contacted the land owners to give them our telephone
number. I also requested the owners of the winter wheat sites,
5 and 6, to let us know when the wheat will be/is harvested.

Site 1: Talked to Brad Shultz and offered to move the power cable,
if necessary, when his renter planted milo at this site. Brad did
not expect the power cable to be a problem.

Site 2: Left voice mail for Gary Tice

Site 3: Talked to Dwain McFarland's mother-in-law

Site 4: Left voice mail for Jeff Ryan. He called back later that day.

Site 5: Sent email to Cleyon Yowell. Offered to meet him at the site
for a tour and requested to be contacted re wheat harvest.

Site 6: Left voice mail for Ken Andra. Saw him at the site May 18
and gave him url for web page.

Site 7: Talked to Nancy Wilson

Site 8: Talked to Mrs. Bannon May 19.

Site 9: Sent email to David Burdette

7: Fast_KH2O, Site all, Wed 17-Apr-2002 10:02:04 MDT, Krypton hygrometer locations/mounting
At this time we have 6 functioning kryptons. The other 4 have been
sent to CSI for repair.

The plan is the put the 6 at sites 1-6. For simplicity
they're in serial number order:

Site	Krypton S/N
1	1101
2	1133
3	1389
4	1390
5	1392
6	1397

When the others arrive

7	1391
8	1393
9	1394

spare	1395

If any krypton is not installed as above, or if the spare is swapped
in anywhere, then the EVE configuration must be changed for that station.

SteveS determined new calibration coefs for the 6 units. The new coefficients
have been entered into the EVE configs, so those 6 are good-to-go.

The krypton calibration files are in $PAM/config/calfiles/kryXXXXs.dat.

When a flash card is created for a station, one of the the
calfiles/kryXXXXs.dat is copied to krypton.dat, which is included
within config.dat.

(8/8/02) The krypton hygrometers were mounted on the sonic booms as
follows:

Place the KH2O sensors 30 cm behind the intersection of the paths
for the CSAT3 and ATI-NUW sonics.

For the CSAT3, mount the KH2O vertically below the boom.

For the ATI-NUW, mount the KH2O vertically north of the boom

Place the KH2O sensors 30 cm behind the vertical path for the
ATI-K sonics.

For the ATI-K, mount the KH2O horizontally below and up close to the
boom.

2: Planning, Site all, Fri 04-Jan-2002 10:08:30 MST, Site layout considerations
IHOP layout of Flux-PAM mast, radiation stand, and solar panels

IHOP latitude ~ Oklahoma/Kansas border = 37 deg N.

Operation dates: May 1 - June 30

Need to place radiation stand and solar panels beyond shadow of
10m mast.

Daytime shadows extend north of sunrise/sunset azimuths + 180 deg.

Sunrise/sunset azimuths
-----------------------
Date	35 deg N latitude	40 deg N latitude
----	-----------------	-----------------
May 1	73/287 72/288
June 22	60/300 58/302

Thus okay to place radstand or solar panels south of 58/302 + 180 =
122-238 deg.

If radstand and mast are placed more than 8.5 m from the mast,
shadow of mast will not reach them for solar elevation > 50 deg.

Azimuth for solar elevation of 50 deg
-------------------------------------
Date	35 deg N latitude	40 deg N latitude
----	-----------------	-----------------
May 1	112/248 119/241
June 22 95/265 102/258

Thus okay to place radstand or solar panels north of 119/241 + 180 =
61-299 deg.

Conclusion
----------
Excluded azimuths for radstand and solar panels with respect to
the Flux-PAM mast are 61-122 degrees and 238-299 degrees,
roughly 30 degrees N&S of E&W.

Note that the rain gauge should if possible be placed north of the
radiation stand to avoid shading the ground under the radiometers.
