318: Site_visit, Site 7, Tue 30-Jul-2002 10:05:47 MDT, Site 7 visit, May 31
This entry was made post-project from information in my paper logbook.

Arrived 15:03
Primary concern was the GOES interference.
GOES DCP 120 inside Eve box. Shielded both Tsurf and Kr cables with foil.
Comparison of Kr signal prior and post shielding indicated that shielding helped
Dirt clod taken from near NW leg of Rad stand

310: Site_visit, Site 7, Wed 26-Jun-2002 08:21:35 CDT, Site 7 Visit: Final Trime sample, SDR "ShieldOff" start, PV removed
06/25/02 17:15 - 18:00 Local

Purpose: Final Trime Soil Measurement.
	SDR 'Shield-Off' Test begun
	Removed solar panels

SDR Test: See also entry #265 for more.
Turned off station, removed rf shielding, downloaded
	previous sdr data to panasonic.
	17:42 began new test, sdr #5, st7_0625.off

Trime measurements
ISFF	26.2(33), 26.0(33), 26.1(33), 26.0(33)
P10	34.6(37), 34.6(37), 34.6(37), 34.5(37)

TRH Note: was bad while we were here, perhaps before because we
didn't check it before shutting down EVE to begins the
new SDR test. It apparently came back correctly later.

298: Site_visit, Site 7, Sun 23-Jun-2002 18:24:49 CDT, Site 7 Visit: goes restored, sdr problem/restart
06/23/02 11:45-13:40 Local

Purpose: No GOES messages coming in.

The station was actually up and running OK.

GOES:	Another power plug problem!
The power plug was slightly ajar.
It seems that the shield on this cable
stiffened it enough so that opening
the door caused it to disconnect even though
it appears as if it was still in the front-
	panel socket.

SDR:	The error LED was flashing indicating the recorder failed.
(This unit has been a problem child.)
Removed microDrive #2 files copied covering ~24 hours for 6/21.
	(see entry #265 for more)

Replaced button battery so date/time/etc. will stay put.
Moved unit to 'pin-jack' method so it can be used without
	power cycling EVE.
	Swapped code to version 7.3.
Installed microDrive #5 and restarted, but...

NOTE: The drive is making noise continuously so it'll
probably die. This older version of the sdr board/code
leaves the drive running so it's more vulnerable to problems.
Need to make the upgrade to the newest version.

294: Site_visit, Site 7, Sun 23-Jun-2002 10:01:31 CDT, site 7 visit, jun22 16:15 - 16:30CDT
Went to station 7 to get the SDR communication cable.
Also cleaned Krypton.
I apparently did something wrong because the station went down.
Will fix today!

282: Site_visit, Site 7, Fri 21-Jun-2002 19:36:00 CDT, site 7 visit, 16:00 - 16:30
I went by station 7 to check on the SDR system to see if the changes
made yesterday worked. Based on the filenames and sizes, everything looks
good. Below are the filenames and size
filename	created size (bytes)
06202151.00Z	00:51:12	12045610
06202152.00Z	08:51:16	12060324
06202153.00Z	16:27:12	11090682
06202154.00Z	16:27:12	322033

The last file was created after I stopped data collection to examine
the filenames.

279: Site_visit, Site 7, Fri 21-Jun-2002 07:33:03 CDT, Site 7 visit, 6/20 16:15-17:15
At 7 the flashcard in the SDR was removed and replaced with another
larger capacity card. The configuration parameters of the SDR were
checked and the filename was changed to a more representative name.
There were not mice or nest in the rain gauge.

Note About SDR files:
They were once again short files.
 ls -l /mnt/pccard
-rwxr-xr-x 1 pam rtf 0 Jan 1 2011 041912ao.00z
-rwxr-xr-x 1 pam rtf 0 Jun 20 16:35 06180000.00z
-rwxr-xr-x 1 pam rtf 60535 Jun 20 16:46 06180001.00z
However Steve checked the configuration of the SDR-OEM
and it was ok. Perhaps that unit has a problem, or else
the media (in this case one of the 192mB compact flash cards)
	was bad.
	The files were stored in,
	/aster_data/aster/projects/IHOP02/raw_data/sdr/s07

260: Site_visit, Site 7, Tue 18-Jun-2002 18:35:28 CDT, Site 7 visit, 16:45 to 17:15 CDT
Went to station 7 to get the fast data. The 340 flash was
replaced with a 196 flash. We will need to change the 196
in a few days.
I also cleaned the domes and the krypton.

246: Site_visit, Site 7, Sat 15-Jun-2002 15:34:50 CDT, Site 7 visit
[The primary reason for this visit is to install an SDR at this site to allow
the possibility of recovering low water vapor flux signals from the raw data.]

[It also was a clear morning, preceding a MCS storm later in the afternoon, so
we finished our series of shading tests at s7-9.]

Arrived 10:00

copy metppf.166 /card
remove 10Mb card from EVE
move_metppf
insert 20Mb card in EVE with new stn7 config.dat (fastout)
power off EVE
install SDR board and cabling with microdrive #2
10:10 EVE on again
delete config.dat, kryton.dat, reboot EVE

10:15 Cleaned Kr
10:18 Cleaned radiometers

10:20 - 10:30 Sun Shadow tests captured to s7l.020615

removed microdrive; copied 400K file to Panasonic; reinserted

Depart 10:38

232: Site_visit, Site 7, Mon 10-Jun-2002 18:51:45 CDT, Site 7 noise tests
Arrived 16:11

A series of tests were carried out to determine and reduce Kr signal noise
The fast data was acquired for later analysis (logged as s7.020610):

- Battery pack ( 1.61v ) to AMP-9 - Good ~ 8035
- Battery pack to serial A/D - Good ~ 16065
- Kr 1394 installed (head in zip-log bag); wired directly to A/D (lots of
  GOES noise)
17:00 disconnected the grey cable from Kr box and reconnected using
      red cable (better shielding?)
17:05 removed plastic bag covering Kr head
- connected via front panel
Turned off station and re-did GOES shielding (twisted wires vs. clip leads to
ground, shielded GOES transmitter power as well). Noise now ~80,

A crudely-annotated plot of the above data is attached.

Conclusion: most of the "noise" seen on this station was still GOES
interference. I've significantly reduced it, but it is still present.

Time will tell if 1394 behaves better at this station than its former location
at s9. It checks out okay in the lab (13mA, 1.7V in dry air -- even
better than 1392 that just came back from Campbell) and I've just replaced
the 4-pin connector which had a small amount of white corrosion. Nevertheless,
I don't have much confidence that the connector change will fix the low-noise
problem.

Changed station configuration to use kry1394s.dat calibration file.

Departed 17:38

228: Site_visit, Site 7, Sun 09-Jun-2002 18:52:40 CDT, Site 7 visit
Arrived 14:12

Set GOES transmission time.

Exchanged serializer and examined noise:
Didn't have a working CSAT-1 serializer in the spare box :(, also the A/D
from the one CSAT-1 spare didn't work with the CSAT-1 CPU in the box.
Thus, changed to a configuration with the old CSAT-1 CPU and the A/D from
the UW-1 that we removed from s9 yesterday. The reference voltages were
nearly the same -- the CPU is -88 and the A/D is -86. I left it this way.
I used "fastsave" to examine the data, expecting a good result to be a large
reduction in h2o'h2o'.

h2o	w'h2o'	h2o'h2o'
17.82	0.029	0.145 before changes; obviously bad
17.91	0.023	0.199 "
18.24	0.023	0.028 change to -86 A/D; (short fastsave)
18.02	0.012	0.264 " (normal length fastsave)
18.03	-0.001	0.336 "; reseated all connectors on EVE and also
changed to spare Krypton signal cable

Obviously, none of these changes improved matters. I went back to the normal
cabling, though I left the -86 A/D board in place.

The only thing I can think of next is to work on the front panel itself!

Removed Kr 1393 for transport to station 8 for tests

198: Site_visit, Site 7, Thu 06-Jun-2002 10:44:49 CDT, Site 7 visit
[This typed in 6 Jun for stuff done 5 Jun since I was too soggy yesterday.]

Peggy Lemone and Fei Chen visited yesterday. I took them to sites 7,9,8 while
I rehung krypton electronics (which were cleaned up and had new 6-pin connectors
installed in the trailer) in plastic boxes and downloaded /card. All of these
were serviced by climbing -- the towers were not dropped.

It was raining during all of these visits, so all kryptons were wet. All
krypton signals were only ~30mV -- hopefully they will recover.

I intended to do the logger power rewiring at s7 and s9, but forgot to bring
power cables :(

Approximate times were:
s7: 1340-1420 (drove in -- Peggy walked)
s9: 1530-1600 (started to drive in, got stuck in the mud!)
s8: 1630-1700 (walked in) had error downloading /card; DID NOT GRAB SDR

191: Site_visit, Site 7, Tue 04-Jun-2002 18:23:24 CDT, Site 7 visit
Arrived in heavy rain at 14:40.
Drove only to gate. Steve ran to station, climbed up and removed Kr electronics
Departed at 15:00

161: Site_visit, Site 7, Wed 29-May-2002 23:19:08 CDT, Site 7 visit
We did several things at site 7. Our primary reason for the visit was to see
if the glitch in the analog channels seen in the high-rate data at s8 also
occurred at non-supersites. Using "sbusdebug" to watch Tsfc voltages, it was
obvious that the glitch does occur here. The counts = 0.1mV changed by ~250
when the GOES transmitter was on. I captured a bit of this on the Panasonic
using minicom (this file is now in $PAM/projects/IHOP02/captures/s7.020529).
We further found out
by attaching the dummy RF load that this problem disappears. Thus, it is an
RF interference problem. We moved the antenna from the SW to E leg of the
tripod, but this didn't appear to work. (Note that we left it in this position
which is rather close to the sonic.) During the process, I rebooted a few
times and even powered-off the station once. Note that the /card data should
recover much of the data while the GOES was off.

We left the station with GOES back running and the antenna near the sonic.

During all of this, an EVE error started appearing: "Illegal Address, 21 ticks".
Since all of the data channels appeared to be working, we ignored this.

Also, it seemed to me that the CR10x data didn't get started after one of the
reboots, so I used "lineon 2"; "lineoff 2" to get it going again. I'm assuming
that this really wasn't necessary.
