00Z - Perfect launch.  Lots of stars and calm winds.
12Z - Good 'Tebow' Launch.  The reference to sonde window was showing temp off for a few sondes and I finally gave the go due to the WXT was off.  The wind is very calm and the sun is out, with no aspiration, I believe the sonde was more correct.  With other stations on board, they are all off in comparison.

Did some measurements of the profiler to keep track of it's orientation.  It has moved back to it's start when Laura's shift was ended.  Sunny with fair weather cumulus and some cumulus on the horizon.  Rebooted the profiler computer to get the data to sync.  Looks like it did but other things are complaining now (NIMA).  Day ended up being just gorgeous with fair weather cumulus all around.  Nice and puffy clouds all over.  Hoping for green flash tonight.  Wish me luck.

Day started with the Display Manager computer not working properly.  Had the cursor just blinking and nothing loading.  The computer finally booted but it's not happy.  Gary is looking into the hang-up.  Something with back-up failed last night so a reboot was needed which didn't fully happen.  Most of the Naigos has been solved but the profiler data.  Not worried since Gary G. knows its bad.  Day was great weather with sunshine and fair weather cumulus.  Turned to some nice rain producing cumulus right at launch time.  

00Z - Launch went well.  Every star was out this morning.  Absolutely gorgeous out.  I did terminate the sounding at 100mb-ish just because it looks like the balloon is iced and is slowly decending.  I actually still have the balloon communicating to us.  It was around 50km away.  Impressive.
12Z - The sonde did got right through the exhaust of the boat.  Slight rain on launch from an isolated cumulus cloud.

All displays look great.  Pretty colors and straight lines.

They are bringing in the SEA-SOAR sensor during this mornings launch.  Deck was crowded but no wind so did not have to bother anyone for this release.  Seems really quiet outside.  Hard to see sky with all the deck lights on.  The bird is on-board and heading over to a NOAA buoy for repair.  Fishermen were all over the buoy so we just left w/o repair.  Heading to Durban.

00Z - Winds were light this morning.  Deck operations were going on during launch.  I did fill this balloon with more helium because I was worried about where I was going to release balloon I need to make it go up quickly.  The flight did end a little late and I apologize.  I noticed the sonde did hit water and not signal but GAUS stayed running.  No lock-ups. [wiping forehead]

Trolling is complete.  No instruments and beginning to do SEA-SOAR ops.  This will not hinder my launches one bit.  Will start to move when the instrumentation is in the water.



00Z - Wahoo!  Trolling has stopped (we got it by the way) and I can get to my 00Z launch.  I will make sure this is in before 02Z.
12Z - Deck becoming more and more crowded.  Three sondes were crap in a row.  Successful navigation and fill of balloon through crates and cages and lots of sharp metal objects.  Good sounding.

FYI, the lab doors are getting sanded for re-painting.  I have been noticing a lof paint dust around benches.  I did mention something, but too late.  All doors are finished being sanded.  Hope amps,computer and racks like a little paint dust.  [crossing fingers]

12Z - First launch seemed to go good until the string didn't deploy all the way.  Noticed winds in sounding and it looked horrible.  So did a successful re-launch. 

Anytime there is some buoy, mooring or SEA-SOAR operation on deck I have to move the aspirator over to the port side of the deck.  It is about 10-ish feet from normal spot.

The trolling for this last mooring string has begun.  They are laying out wire on the bottom of the floor so very limited deck space.  Once they start to pull the wire along the bottom, NO one is aloud on deck.  They say this should be over by my 12Z launch. 
Since they're hauling up trolling line no deck ops is permitted.  This includes the 02 Deck.  Today was my day to check the profiler and clean camera, so I will push this off till tomorrow.
We are on our second line out to bottom of ocean floor and trolling for the mooring line.  My 12Z has been shut down and all of aft decks.  Nothing I can do.

00Z - Great launch.  Did two launches on at this time.  First was doing great till it was about 10' off the deck and battery dropped off.  Second launch looks great...I taped the battery on this time.

Today is the first day of two launches.  It's going to be hard, but I will try to not go stir crazy.  Today was a standing-still-for-a-bit day.  Had to get two buoys that were really close to each other.  I do want to say that the deck is already getting filled with buoys and balloon filling is going to get interesting.  It seems that the rest of the buoy that went floating free is just around us now and we have to troll for the instruments that are probably sitting on the bottom of the floor of the ocean.  So I may be launching a few balloons from the same location.  Could be days...could.

00Z - Beautiful night sky.  Cumulus around but nice openings that they stars are just filling the sky.  Moon is at half.
12Z - Great launch.  Since standing still it was a very stable fill and light winds.

The charger/battery for the aspirator is starting to act crazy.  The LED light is remaining on now.  I want to say it got wet and is shorting.  I may take it apart but will see what happens when it dries.  I'm not the only one that launched in a downpour am I?  Charger fixed.  Major corrosion everywhere.  Tried to clean up as much as I could.  
I noticed that the first launch was iced around 600/550mb and looking at the skew-t it is showing it got to 400mb.  WTF?

Will be helping the buoy boys bring in our first "free" buoy.  Don't worry.  I will not my last 12Z launch.

00Z - First sonde went great.  Deployed in some pretty heavy rains.  All went great till about 550mb and the balloon got iced.  Sent off another one and lost GPS.  Can't win this morning.
06Z -Okay launch.  Made it to about 500mb and telemetry went out.  Decided to end launch so program would not look up.  A balloon popped again.  This rain is nuts.  The GPS is having a tough time keeping track same with the telemetry.
12Z - Good flight.  Even with a buoy and wind direction change.  Launch went smoothly.

Noticed that we were not pushing data over to the Revelle drive so Kris came in and re-mounted that drive.  We are currently shoving data over to catch it up.  If we ever reboot this machine we need to re-mount the Revelle drive manually.

It was cloudy for the entire day.  Stratus and cumulostratus were the main cloud type.  There were interminent squalls with 20 - 25 knot winds and light to moderate rain.  A gust front moved through at 5:05 PM LT and ushered in 30 - 35 kt winds, moderate rain, and large swells.

MJO Active Phase is right over Southern DYNAMO Array.  Frequent convection is expected. Suppressed phase of westwardly moving Kelvin wave will decrease convection somewhat, but not as big of an impact as first thought.  MJO Active Phase will move into maritime continent by Dec 1-2 and a Suppressed MJO Phase settles in.  This means there will be a general decrease of convection starting December 2.

There were no temperature and humidity measurements taken since it was cloudy.

Suppressed phase of Kelvin wave still expected to destructively interfere wiith Active MJO.  As the MJO Active phase moves into the Maritime Continent, the Active phase of the Kelvin Wave will constructively intefere leading to frequent active convection over the Maritime Continent.

Some convection developed to the northeast of the ship and slowly propagated southwest at around 5 AM.  It weakened before getting to the ship.

There has not been a lot of convection near the ship since we have been on station.    This is due to drying in the mid levels (see sondes).  The drying is due to the suppressed phase of the MJO.  This phase is moving out of the Eastern Indian Ocean. This means a return to "normal" conditions (meaning slightly more frequent convection than what we have been seeing).

talked with Matt about doing brief weather desciption, and he pointed out that he would be happy to do it, but his shift happens when it is dark.....to which I replied....good point. So... I will attempt to decribe the fluffy white clouds that might look like sheep to some, but not me!

Had to relaunch 15Z sounding, balloon burst upon launch.

No 18Z sounding, filled first balloon to 35cu ft. to compensate for winds, balloon burst before launch. Second balloon filled to 30cu ft. sonde got caught on life jacket during launch and strong winds ripped balloon away before it could be untangled, sonde smashed against the boat.

About 00:40UT I changed from the y38 beam to the y26 beam in an attempt to reduce sea clutter.  I think that this only moved the sea clutter in the same direction as the wind, so when we shift heading, the low altitude barbs might change.  Will run this way for a while and observe.

Cruised South along 78.5E.  About 2UT we stopped to deploy a buoy.  This took until about 12UT.  The wind barbs appear good.

When we made the right hand turn, all of the wind barbs changed from easterlies to Southwesterlies.  To investigate this problem, we first turned off the ship speed correction about 06Z.  This showed me that the beam at 70 degrees azimuth must be the the x25 beam, while the beam at 160 azimuth must be the y26 beam.  I think this is the result of mislabeling on the antenna (I noticed multiple labels on each side).  I changed the beam about 11:30Z.

I will see how it works overnight and readjust tomorrow if needed.

We have noticed a problem in the wind barb processing.  It seems to be a ship speed subtraction problem.  If you look back through the data you can see the wind barbs reverse directions when the ship stops.

Nearing Cocos on transit cruise.

Weather fine, lots of cumulus cloud this morning but dried out during day
and by evening only a few clouds on the horizon.  Seas fairly calm,
perhaps about a meter swell.

Profiler showed brief light rain predawn (about 23Z Sep 3) and deck was a
little wet at dawn when we did the 0Z sounding.

Two soundings today. 0Z sounding lost GPS after launch however did not relaunch
as not an IOP sounding.

Transit cruise to Cocos continues.

Weather continued fine, easterlies near surface, westeries aloft.
Scattered cumulus clouds, thicker in the morning, partly clearing during day.
Seas fairly calm, although swell increasing in evening.

The ship stopped for some oceanographic testing and mast work for an hour or
so late morning (approx 3UT - 4UT).

Profiler stopped for a system backup 0UT to 1:30UT.
Profiler working well, seeing winds up to about 2km, and in high mode up to 
about 4km.  Lowest gates winds (below about 500m) contaminated by sea clutter.
Profiler amp current 1.79A in low mode, 2.18A in high mode.

Two soundings - launched both with 30 cuft Helium instead of the 35 prev
as winds were light - almost off the stern so launched on port side.
GTS ingest apparently now working.  Got sounding profile plotting working so
now plots available on local web page (viewable just by internal ship network).

Surface data flow from ship still not working and ships computer tech
now considering other options instead of UDP port, such as file transfers.

DAILY REPORT FOR FRI SEPT 2ND, 2011

Transit cruise continues.

Weather today, a little thicker scattered cumulus clouds this morning 
than yesterday, but they gradually cleared during the day to widely scattered.
Scattered thin cirrus aloft.  Sea calm, although a little swell by evening.

Two soundings again today.  
The aspirator fan battery was low for the 0Z sounding, although it was still
pulling a slow airflow over the sonde.
The second sounding was delayed for two hours to 14Z by request from Boulder
so that a manual test submission to the GTS could be made.  
D and WMO files emailed back to Boulder for this test.
Gary thinks he's fixed the automatic submission and we'll test tomorrow.

As requested by the ship and scientists, a portion of our data stream is
being copied to the ship's science store.  The sub-directories of ds being
copied are: class GAUSdata prof915 prof915l prof915h soap_plots webcam

Got the Trimble Water Vapor GTS transfer scripts working, this data is
going into ds/wv_gps

Made changees to profiler soap plotting so that wind barbs appear, and
plots are available to other groups on-board via an internal web page.

Helium container was reconnected by the electrian (they wanted a different
cable run).

Profiler working well although winds at low gates still affected by sea
clutter. Final amp current 2.18A for high mode and 1.79A for low mode.

DAILY REPORT FOR THURS SEP 1

Continued transit in eastern Indian Ocean, sailing westward towards the Cocos.

Weather fine.  Widely scattered low marine cumulus clouds, increasing from 
morning, then decreasing late afternoon.  Soundings show very shallow boundary
layer (approx 500 m).  Scattered thin cirrus aloft.  
Seas remain calm with light easterly winds (westerly aloft).

Adjusted profiler setting this morning (around 0Z) to increase coherent 
integration, and slightly lower the first gate, although still seeing lots of
sea clutter on some beams so might raise it up again.

Weather briefing meeting with skype link back to Boulder. The link worked well,
although it was from a special line in the bridge and cut off internet to 
the rest of the ship.  The report said MJO very weak and inconsistent over the
next week for two and not much weather is expected.

Profiler amp current 1.79A in low mode and 2.18A in high mode.

Chris Fairall's group got their ceilometer installed and it saw the cumulus
clouds at 500-600m, which is where the profiler sees stronger echoes,
and is consistent with soundings.

12Z sounding lost signal at 200mb for unknnown reasons.  GAUS software locked
up so had to ctrl-alt-del to exit.

DAILY REPORT FOR WEDS AUG 31

Continuing on transit in Dynamo cruise 1.  Have left Timor Sea and now in the Indian Ocean.

Weather continued fine, clearer than yesterday with just a few widely scattered 
cirrus clouds.  Light easterly and calm seas.

0Z sounding briefly appeared in profiler.

Wind profiler seeing fewer echoes thanks to the dry air aloft.
Profiler was down for a period this morning (0-1UT) while testing and changing 
parameters to get less sea clutter. The sea clutter was improved, mainly by
raising the lowest gates to 300m, and just using the beams with the least
clutter (using beams at 70 deg and 160 deg wrt to bow).

Ships navigation data to profiler had a few problems, it wasn't changing 
from 1-2UT, and the feed was down around 3UT.

Diagnosing ships met data feed problems with help from Gary.  Currently
we are entering the data manually into GAUS during sounding prelaunch.

Profiler amp current 1.79A in low mode, 2.18A in high mode.

DAILY REPORT FOR TUES AUGUST 30, 2011

First full day at sea.  We are in transit mode which means soundings every 
12 hours.  First sounding was 0Z (about 0930 local) - Captain Wes came to watch.

Weather fine with light winds and some cirrus.  Calm seas.

0Z sounding showed multiple wind shears.  12Z sounding battery cover fell off,
but it kept on transmitting and appeared to be fine.  
Both sondes flew to burst (about 50mb).

Profiler running okay, some sea clutter to about 500m, will try adjusting gates
tomorrow.  Final amp current 2.66A on high mode, 1.98A on low.

Workspace in the lab rearranged as oceanography equipment was moved.  
This meant shutting down the data manager for a couple of hours and briefly
interrupting the profiler.  Also radiosonde boxes and other items were shifted
from the Helium container into the main lab.

Ships surface met is being used for sounding surface check.  They are still 
working on their data loggers so it isn't being ingested into our DM yet,
so we are entering it manually.

Ship fire and liftboat drills held today.

DAILY REPORT FOR AUG 29, 2011	

The Revelle was repositioned to the East Arm Wharf last evening for fueling,
and at 1600 local time the Revelle set sail.  The wind profiler was turned
on outside the 12 mile limit, although was up and down as adjustments were made.
First sounding will be tomorrow morning.

Weather was fine, warm and a light breeze with a little cirrus.
