DYNAMO R/V REVELLE ISS SET-UP
DARWIN, AUSTRALIA
August 19 - 28, 2011
Set-up of ISS2 on the R/V Revelle for DYNAMO in Darwin, Australia.
Wind profiler with stablized platform and clutter fence was assembled at
Port Darwin's East Arm Wharf about 30km from Darwin. It was assembled on
an H-frame mounted on pallets. The pallets enabled it to be lifted by
a large forklift, the H-frame enables it to be craned. Another H-frame is
used as a spacer for the crane, since the bottom H-frame is narrower than
the top of the clutter fence. The system was then trucked to the Fort Hill
wharf in the city where it (minus the pallets) was craned on board the Revelle.
The system includes a tilt sensor mounted on the stablized antenna.
The location on the Revelle is on the aft 02 deck, just forward of the CDT
winches.
A GAUS radiosonde sounding system was installed, with antennas placed on the
aft 02 deck. A container with 145 Helium cylinders is on the main deck.
The ship's met sensors on the bow mast will be used for surface checks.
Soundings will be submitted to the GTS.
A SPN-1 Sun Pyrnometer was installed at the top of the bow mast, next to the
ships shortwave and longwave radiometers. This provides direct and diffuse
solar radiation measurements.
A Trimble GPS Receiver for integrated water vapor measurements, with an
accompanying WXT520 weather sensor, was installed on the aft 02 deck
(receiver in a weather box, antennas and WXT on the aft 02 deck mast).
A webcam was mounted on the railing of the CDT winch boom above the aft
02 deck (starboard side - pointed aft, upwards, and slightly starboard)
to monitor clouds.
The computers, receiver racks, stabilized platform controller, GAUS rack and
other items were installed in the main lab. The data manager computer will
be uploading a minalist data set back to Boulder every hour, about 10 minutes
past the hour. The internet connection is very slow and intermittant so
delays and missing data are expected.
The set-up crew was Bill Brown, Lou Verstraete, Steve Semmer, Gary Granger,
Brad Lindseth, and Jen Standridge.
The first crew on the Revelle are Bill Brown and student Darek Baranowski,
and they will be completing the final few set-up items and tidying up on
the inital one-week leg to the Cocos Islands.
