331: radiation, Site 5, Thu 24-Aug-2006 15:53:53 MST, XBee test at 5
During the site visit to 5 a test of the XBee radios with the new firmware
was conducted. They were on the air for about 30 minutes. A separate data
file was created for the test. There were no missing characters in the
data stream during the test period. We may install the Xbee on Saturday
to do a 24 hour test.

286: radiation, Site , Mon 14-Aug-2006 11:28:53 MST, Rlw glitches
Just out of curiosity, we've wondered about the glitches that have sometimes
happened in Rlw (only observed at night). These were at:

Rlw.in, Rlw.out, 7/19, 21:00
Rlw.in: 7/28, 1:00
Rlw.in,Rlw.out: 8/4, 1:00
Rlw.out: 8/10, 16:00
Rlw.in: 8/13, 1:00

Sometimes glitches also occur on T/RH, sonic sample flags, and of course these
sometimes are associated with Tdome spikes.

We find no evidence of these spikes in the local data store raw_data files,
so we think that these can all be ignored.

283: radiation, Site 6, Mon 14-Aug-2006 10:11:23 MST, Cleaned Rnet

Radiometers looked clean at site 10.

Leveled net radiometer.

Assuming net rad boom was pointing south,
bubble was NE of center, so radiometer
was pointing slightly SW.

158: radiation, Site 6, Sun 23-Jul-2006 13:05:34 MDT, Cleaned net radiometer at Station 6
I cleaned the net radiometer domes at station 6 this morning, although they
appeared clean.
155: radiation, Site 4, Sun 23-Jul-2006 12:53:10 MDT, Replaced net radiometer at stn 4
The net radiometer at station 4 failed at 0100 local time, July 21.
Gordon repaired the cow-chewed net radiometer cable removed on July 20
and I replaced the domes (one had been dented, likely in transit).
We returned it to station 4 at 1500, July 22. The net radiometer on the
station again had a chewed cable, but looked like small incisor damage
rather than molar damage. Electric fence still intact and Gordon tested it
successfully by grabbing both the ground rod and the fence.

We also swapped the USB data drive.

154: radiation, Site , Sat 22-Jul-2006 11:21:38 MDT, repaired net radiometer s/n Q94196
Gordon repaired the chewed cable on net radiometer s/n Q94196. One dome was
dented, so I replaced both domes while I was at it.

150: radiation, Site 5, Sat 22-Jul-2006 10:12:00 MDT, Station 5 radiometer cleaning
Station 5 – Radiation sensors cleaned

The 4-component and net radiation sensors were cleaned between 1210-1215 using
distilled water and kim wipes. Some dirt had splattered up and accumulated
at the apex of the domes during the previous day’s rains.

134: radiation, Site 10, Tue 18-Jul-2006 09:55:10 MDT, St 10 Visit: radiometers cleaned
17jul06 12:40 - 14:50

Purpose: routine maintenance, logger power

Radiometers Cleaned 14:30

Logger Power re-arranged.
Had to rewire to allow the logger to be powered directly from the
main data system since we turned off the XBEE radios a couple days
ago and disconnected the pv as a result.
This box needs to be rewired anyway.

	Retrieved XBEE radios
Removed 20w pv from top of sawhorse; which slightly improved the
shading issue of the ground produced by the sawhorse/logger.

107: radiation, Site 2, Fri 14-Jul-2006 20:21:58 MDT, st2 Visit: irad cleaned, tsfc repositions
14Jul06 14:00 - 17:30

Purpose: Intermittent outages last night / routine maintenance

15:05 Radiometers Cleaned.

~15:45 Tsfc re-aimed to be away from the large mesquite bush to a more representative spot on the ground.
103: radiation, Site 10, Fri 14-Jul-2006 19:47:01 MDT, St 10: Radiation stand raised to full extension (~3m)
The radiation stand was raised between 1105 and 1150 LT.

The purpose of this was to eliminate some potential impacts of radiation from
bushes above the height of the LW.in sensor.

Initial impressions are that this had little effect. The hillside/valley location to the west may be the culprit, as may be a scratch on the sensor dome.

100: radiation, Site 5, Fri 14-Jul-2006 09:54:54 MDT, St 5: Radiation cleaned
13Jul06 15:15-17:30

DAQ was running upon arrival. A couple days ago it's plots were intermittent.

Decided to reinstall new software (uncertain which version it had)

NOTE: during this process got a MEMORY ERROR during install....!
"Eep Block 0x002a0000 taken from Free_List Bad Free_Size of 0x00000064!!"

NOTE: data stick was 91% full in 10days.

95: radiation, Site 5, Thu 13-Jul-2006 16:31:05 MDT, St 5: Radiation cleaned
13Jul06 15:15-17:30

15:27	Cleaned Radiometers. All appeared good prior to cleaning.

92: radiation, Site 10, Thu 13-Jul-2006 16:00:43 MDT, St 10: Radiation - elevated values of LW.in
Site 10 LW.in has seemed elevated relative to the other stations (~20 W/m2 most
of the day). There appears to be two main possible reasons.
1. The 4-component radiation stand is within 3 m of some vegetation (bushes)
that project somewhat into the hemisphere.
2. There is a 1 cm long and < 1mm wide scratch on the dome.

Tomorrow morning we will test #1 by elevating the radiation sensor another
meter (max height) and observing the resulting changes in the radiation
measurements.

Pictures were taken of its current configuration and of the scratch.

Measurements can be considered disturbed (radiation primarily) 0938-1030LT.

There was a false rain spike during the visit.

HFT,jm: added direct cabling bypassing the Xbee Radios.....next morning no more
	glitches in the data plots.
Thus confirmation that the XBEE radios are vulnerable to the dropped
characters as we knew and expected. Find reason later.....
76: radiation, Site 9, Sat 08-Jul-2006 16:22:29 MDT, st9 Visit: Rnet leveled
8Jul06, 12:10-12:20

Purpose: Show Greg where it is,

Leveled Rnet, lifted the logger box off the ground (it was not hot because it is painted white). We also lifted the GOES xmitter off the bottom of the cooler.

Cows here now!!!

Yet another site that should have been fenced but the 'authorities'
hadn't told us. Later. I'm still thinking the risk is mostly to
the rain gauge because otherwise there is plenty of vegetation in the
area for cows to use for scratching. Same situation at 1 and 2

72: radiation, Site 10, Fri 07-Jul-2006 15:46:14 MDT, st10 Visit: domes cleaned, descrepancy between Tsfc temps
7Jul06 12:05-12:40

Purpose: Cleaned radiometer domes with distilled h2o. There were some
dirt splatters on the downward looking domes. We did this because of
unusual discrepancies between the long-wave radiometer calculated surface temp. and the directly measured Tsfc values. We had observed positive effects of cleaning the 'splattered' rnet dome at st7,st8.

This discrepancy began with the big rain event on the 6th, 0Z. That
event left roughly 2' of silt in the wash near st8 and may have
included hail. It's possible water got into the sensor/cabling,
thermister damage, dirt on the domes, etc.

We're continuing to investigating this issue.

70: radiation, Site 10, Fri 07-Jul-2006 09:55:03 MDT, Radiation in question at Station 10, NNW
The long, short and net radiation sensors at Site 10 have begun to deviate from their behavior previously. Specifically, the value of LW radiation (in, out) is large and the range of Tsfc is muted. Less noticeable, SW radiation is reduced. We have noted that during heavy monsoon rains that dirt can splatter the domes, preferentially the lower dome.
67: radiation, Site 8, Thu 06-Jul-2006 18:31:26 MDT, st8 visit: rnet cleaned
6jul06 12:20-15:45

Rnet cleaned at 13:00 and leveled.
There had been a few residue spots on the bottom dome.
60: radiation, Site 1, Wed 05-Jul-2006 20:56:08 MDT, st 1, N: Net radiation leveled
Net radiation was leveled at 1635 - 1640 LT.

The logger was manually elevated (on cactus husks) during this visit.
50: radiation, Site 4, Wed 05-Jul-2006 19:43:37 MDT, st 4, E: Leveled net radiation
Net rad sensor was leveled (it was not too far off).
46: radiation, Site 7, Wed 05-Jul-2006 18:28:13 MDT, st7 visit: rnet cleaned
5jul06 13:15-14:30

There was some splashed on dirt residue on the rnet dome esp. on the bottom. Cleaned at 14:00 local

34: radiation, Site 3, Tue 04-Jul-2006 21:39:55 MDT, Site 3 level net rad
Net radiation was re-leveled at Site 3.
