338: soil, Site all, Mon 28-Aug-2006 08:25:53 MST, TP01 probes
The TP01 probes, at site 2, 5, and 10, had a fold in the thin film transducer.
I assume during installation that the top of the film caught an edge and
started the fold. This is something nobody would have noticed.

Soil samples were taken between 1215-1235

TRIME: Mean value 9.3% with 0.2% variation among two readings of two samples.

Gravitmetric samples (uniform soil with few small rocks – required sledge
but was otherwise well sampled due to the previous day’s rain).

This sample sat overnight (condensation of soil moisture into the container is a considerable factor) and was discarded on 21 July.

144: soil, Site all, Fri 21-Jul-2006 17:44:14 MDT, Revised gravimetric procedure
We revised the gravimetric procedure to account for the soil moisture that
collects on the interior of the tupperware container:

1. Weigh tupperware container with wet soil
2. Clean and weigh large aluminum tray
3. Transfer total soil sample to aluminum tray
4. Weigh wet soil and tray (just for fun, not necessary)
5. Clean and weigh tupperware container
6. Bake moisture out of wet soil sample
7. Weigh dry soil sample and aluminum tray

Bulk density = (w.7 - w.2)/volume of sample

where w.n = weight of step n above
volume of sample = h*pi*r^2 = e.g. 3 cm * pi * (2.7 cm)^2
                 = 68.71 cm^3

Soil moisture (% mass) = ((w.1 - w.5)/(w.7 - w.2) - 1)*100

Fun question: How close is this to

Soil moisture (% mass) = ((w.4 - w.2)/(w.7 - w.2) - 1)*100

I expect the latter soil moisture to be less than the former due to loss of
moisture from the sample that condenses inside the tupperware container.

121: soil, Site 3, Sun 16-Jul-2006 12:05:15 MDT, Stn 3 Visit: Soil measurements, sample, HFT 'glitch fix'
16Jul06 11:30 - 16:00

Purpose: TRIME, Gravimetric and soil sample

TRIME measurements:
	11.6% vol, 44 TDR level
This was taken just north of the tripod, roughly 12m away from the
installed soil sensors. The spot was the only one nearby that
didn't have so many rocks, and was able to insert the probes after
hammering in the 'fake rods'. There's some question whether the
rods made solid contact in the soil.

Gravimetric: No sample taken
Attempted to collect sample, many times. No luck.
'Soil' either fell out of tube, couldn't insert it all the way, and
finally after using Greg's sledge hammer technique 'yet again',
i couldn't extract the brass rings (and of course meanwhile the
'soil' fell out onced again). It's possible that the tubes are now
slightly out of round, and need fixing... :-(

Recommendation: try taking a sample after a good rain storm, and
consider taking the scale carefully into the field to perform
the measurements immediately; placing the small divided samples
	into plastic baggies.

Tub Soil sample collected for later analysis.

HFT Logger Glitch 'fixed'
Directly cabled the logger to viper box, bypassing the XBEE radios.
I had to cludge rewire the logger box to do it.
These boxes need to be rebuilt and improved anyway.

Stn 5 soil samples were taken at 1730 13 July (grav) and 1630 (TRIME). The
soil is very hard and requires leaving the cap loose because a hammer or small
sledge is required to insert the soil tool. A sealable plastic bag was used
to hold the soil samples.

TRIME results (John):
9.4% Volume TDR level 51.0
Note I did have to hammer in the fake-rods prior to inserting the actual
probes. This left me a bit concerned about how well they were coupled to
the ground. This ground is very hard and somewhat brittle. I tried to
'pack' the stuff a little bit before taking the readings all of which
produced the same reading above

91: soil, Site 10, Thu 13-Jul-2006 12:29:39 MDT, st10 Visit: Logger Cabled Directly to Viper
13Jul06 9:30-10:30

Purpose: Swap logger to direct cabling to see if that will eliminate
the HFT glitches produced by character loss in the data
message.....done.

Note: This 'rf logger box' is wired such that the +v input can only go
through the solar charger. This means it must run off the internal
battery and that battery must now be charged through the viper front
panel...this could be an issue for 'blowing it's fuse' and it'll be
interesting to find out.

Goes: box elevated slightly off ground. This box needs to be
redrilled for drain holes since it wasn't correct.

85: soil, Site 10, Mon 10-Jul-2006 20:09:46 MDT, st10 Visit: HFT swapped back: Boost XBEE radio power
10Jul06 16:00-17:30

Purpose: HFT has been glitching at night despite swapping in a replacement
	yesterday.

Examination of data revealed that the data messages from the logger are
being messed up by having characters dropped around the hft values.
This results in erroneous data being calculated in the averages.
Speculation that the maxstream radios may be 'burping' at night in
different radio propagation conditions, or lower batt voltage...hmmm.

1) Xbee radios here. Cabling looks good. But there are significant
bushes between the radio and receiver on the mast, plus that radio is in
the middle of the tripod with some 'shading' or reflective surfaces
from the tubing of the tower.

2) Boosted transmit power level from 'medium' (2), to 'highest' (4)
for the 2.4 radios

82: soil, Site 3, Mon 9-Jul-2006 20:12:27 MDT, st3 Visit: HFT swapped, New Softw, Data Download
9Jul06 14:30-16:30

Purpose: HFT has been glitching at night

1) HFT Swapped
New sensors received from Boulder last night.
Disconnected, but left installed in soil: H013390
	Installed H993560

	Verified via rserial data consistency.

2) New Software installed and swapped data usbdisk

	38% full since 1Jul

3) Cleaned Radiometers, 14:40
Note that they were very clean in appearance and did
not have any of the splattered dirt that we've noticed
	elsewhere.

4) Electric Fence
	No zapping. (Red snapper here)
Tried 'old spare' unit same problems.
	Battery voltage low: 12.3
Setup crew had put one of the more discharged batteries here
is my guess and didn't put it on a pv (same as other sites).
I took one of the older panels and put it directly on this
battery without a charger and hope that boosts it enough.
	Reinstalled original zapper.
Still no light on the charger and the fence is dead to touch,
but the pulser is making noise and I saw voltage pulsing on the
terminals. This unit appeared to work from the good, 13.5v
	system battery as a test.
BVoltage should rise enough to do some good by tomorrow.
Basic problem is poor ground / conductivity / and rubber sole
	shoes.
Saw 4 horses near the station.

5) Goes check
We've had low sigstr for many days, but no data loss.
Wattmeter connected and showed 10W forward 0 refl.
	ie good.
Noticed in data later that while the meter was inline
the reported SigStr was good but after removing it,
the SigStr dropped back to mid-30's.....very strange.

Perhaps a wierd connector problem on cable/antenna but
	i couldn't see anything unusual.
Also note that this has one of the old surge arresters
which had been a problem at 7...coincidence perhaps.

9Jul06 11:45-12:15

Purpose: HFT has been glitching at night
New sensors received from Boulder last night.

	Installed H983211

	Verified via rserial data consistency.
38: soil, Site 10, Tue 04-Jul-2006 22:05:07 MDT, st10 HFT, gsoil
4jul06 14:00

Examined hft, nothing unusual in wiring that i can tell although resistor inside cable could be issue. Symptom is glitching at night when the flux goes positive....Still happening.
May need to replace the hft.
33: soil, Site 3, Tue 04-Jul-2006 21:37:08 MDT, st 3, ENE- soils reseated
Site 3 (ENE)

The soil moisture probe and soil properties probe were turned to a vertical orientation. The soil heat flux probe was reseated as a test towards the elimiation of the erratic nighttime behavior of unknown origin.

32: soil, Site 5, Mon 03-Jul-2006 21:10:16 MDT, st5 Visit: TP01 should be back up
3Jul06 14:50 - 15:50

Purpose: station was 'down'

Put a new TP01 connector in the logger: should be working now.
20: soil, Site 10, Sun 02-Jul-2006 22:14:29 MDT, TRIME soil moisture Site 10
A six-point average of TRIME soil moisture at Site indicated 8.7%. The station is reading about 12% from the echo probe, which is about 4-5 times higher than the other three flux sites. Thus, this measurement corroborates a relatively high value. No other TRIME measurements have been taken.
9: soil, Site 5, Sun 02-Jul-2006 20:27:08 MDT, TP01 disconnected
2Jul06, 9:30-10:30 MST

TP01 glitch problem appears to be a broken ground pin between the 10v regulator and the amp connecotr.

THIS IS EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM AS WHAT CAUSED SO MUCH GRIEF AT 'WEST' IN TREX....IMPROVE/FIX ALL OF THEM FOR NEXT TIME!
