Here's the list of the serial numbers of the instruments as we took them
off the 30m tower.
Also, we took a measurement of top of the 14m boom. It was actually
located 14.15m (to the top of the uppermost wood block). I think we
should enter this too.
Thanks,
Ned

Scintillometer adjustment / data bad
------------------------------------
Anurban and Dawit downloaded the data with Erik, the student from Davis
who is supposed to periodically grab the readings.
However, the data was bad.
At Dawit's suggestion the dip switch settings were adjusted to increase
sensativity. When we tried covering the optics to sample the background
readings, they were too high indicating excessive gain. Meanwhile,
they had tried all the standard settings but got either insufficient signal,
or too high sensativity..
Jan is emailing Scintec about the situation.
Likely problem is that the receiver tower on the other side of the
orchard is too low and the signal is being obstructed by trees.
There could be a polarity issue, but it is unknown if that is even
possible. The apeture is apparently 10-degrees, so wobble in the boom
could be a factor ultimately.
The students went home today, and Jan is considering his options.

- 162: whatever, Site all, Sun 15-Apr-2007 19:47:19 PDT, shift and secure
Sorry, Tom, one big message here, since its been a long day:
Started the day by initiating a backup of the entire dataset from isff1 to isff2
Took soil sample at 0900
Pulled hftower's Pocketec to begin backup
Pulled up the horizontal array between ~1040-1150 (west side first)
(bent the yoke for mounting 6b in the process)
From ~1230-1410 replaced 6b's yoke and secured the array with ratchet straps,
etc.
Went to lunch
From ~1525-1710 moved towers on central sensors up.
From ~1730-1820 put guy wire batteries back (after charging in base)
Also during this period drilled weep hole in hftower and reinstalled Pocketec
In base, continuing to backup disks
Changed to ops7.

- 74: whatever, Site 30m tower, Fri 30-Mar-2007 15:14:57 PDT, Heights of scintillometer and particle counter
Jan Kleissl plans to install his scintillometer on the 30 m tower. We
are measuring 4-component radiation at a height of 16 m, so we would
like to minimize the influence of the scintillometer as much as
possible. The influence of scintillometer on the radiation measurements
will decrease with the cosine of the angle from the zenith at which
the instrument is seen by the radiometers and with the square of the distance
between the scintillometer and the radiometers.
Let z be the height difference between the radiometers and the
scintillometer and x be the horizontal spacing between them, roughly the
length of the radiometer boom. Then the cosine of the viewing angle is
z/sqrt(x^2 + z^2) and the distance between them is sqrt(x^2 + z^2).
The relative influence at different mounting heights is then
z/(x^2+z^2)^1.5
The radiometer boom is roughly 1 m long.
The maximum influence occurs at z = x/sqrt(2) = 0.7x, where the relative
influence is equal to 1/(sqrt(2)*1.5^1.5) = 0.385
The influence is 10% of its peak value at z = 5 m or a height of 21 m.
There are sonics at heights of 18 m and 23 m, so halfway between them
would be 20.5 m, where the influence is 12% of its peak value.
Andreas Held is installing his particle counter at the 14 m sonic.
According to Andrew, he can place it a "meter or so" above or below
the sonic, so we should put it as far below as Andreas thinks feasible.
Mounting his instrument at the height of the boom would have an
influence of 46% of its peak value. 1 m lower at 13 m would place it
3 m below the radiometers and reduce the influence to 25% of its peak value;
2 m lower at 12 m would reduce the influence to 15% of its peak value.

For addition to the logbook:
As of Mar 19, 19:36:28 UTC we're recording both
sensor data and photos on the new 720 Gbyte USB2 disk,
/media/isff1.
All previous CHATS data, and photos have been copied to it
from /data.
Current plans are to keep /media/isff1 permanently
mounted on the aster system.
A 400 Gbyte disk should arrive today. That will
be the backup disk. The plan is to do intermittent
copies to that disk, and bring it back to the hotel
for safe-keeping. With two backup disks, one could
be brought back to Boulder from time to time.
