373: sonic, Site 30m tower, Mon 25-Jun-2007 10:09:59 MDT, Height of 14 m sonic
During teardown, on June 11, we took a measurement of top of the 14m boom.
It was actually located 14.15m (to the top of the uppermost wood block).

Yes, the 14m boom was moved. Steve and I moved it early in Phase
1 when we were installing the triple hot-films for the first time.
There were no more sliding mounts, and 14m happened to be immediately
below a point where the guy wires attached to the tower. So, the guy
wires blocked our ability to raise the boom on the rotating/lifting style
mounts. We decided at that time to shift the boom up to immediately
above the point where the guy wire attached to the tower. When we
were dismantling the tower, I had the thought that we might not have
measured the associated height change. So, before Chris removed that
boom, Steve and I brought the tape up to him for a quick measurement.

So the 14m boom was at this new height for most of the campaign.
The date that it actually changed should be in the log book, i.e. the
day that Steve and I finally got the hot-films installed.

Logbook Entry #60:

Deployed hot films late Saturday afternoon, 3/25 07:07 GMT.

314: sonic, Site horizontal array, Tue 29-May-2007 20:26:21 PDT, narrow configuration measurements - 2b-3b are 51cm apart all others near 50cm
We measured the distance between the yokes in the new, narrow configuration.
All yokes were placed correctly and accurately centered within the tape markers
from phase I.

All yokes were separated by 50cm +-3mm EXCEPT the distance between yokes
2b and 3b were found to be 50.8mm. We believe this was a measurement error
during Phase I and decided to leave it in place for Phase-to-Phase consistency
(discussion among Lenschow, Patton, Poulos).

Ned found what may be an errant reading in the 9m sonic winds (they seem
slightly low, perhaps). We are investigating.

186: sonic, Site horizontal array, Wed 09-May-2007 09:33:14 MDT, good wind directions in 10 m wide configuration
I determined the good wind directions for the period April 15, 17:10, until
May 9, 00:00. In Splus:

> dpar(start="2007 4 15 17:10")
> dpar(end="2007 5 9 00:00")
> dpar(sfxs="ha", hts=9.6)
> good.dir()

The periods with a good wind direction longer than 15 minutes total
177 hours 50 minutes with 49 periods longer than 1 hour.

Aril 15th , 2007
I added wooden dowels to the 'EMT' type tubing junctions in an attempt to
stiffen up the transition from one pipe to the other, with some, but not a lot,
of success. Most of the arrays look OK, with a minimum amount of "sag" to the
inner sonics, but for some reason, the lower east array had a large sag
between the inner and outer sonics. My hope was that a stiffer pipe, or better
junction between the two pieces of pipe would improve this situation, and it
did, but not by a whole lot.
The heights of the sonics need to be measured again.
The arrays that were modified are both upper and lower on west, and then
lower on east.
Upper on east was not modified because the dowel would not fit into the EMT
pipe.

I attempted to shoot the azmuths of of the sonics on the 30 M tower using the
datascope plus or minus .5 deg accy (shooting into the boom)
I didn't get too far due to a lot of leaves obscuring the view.

1.5 meter	94.8
3.0 meter	96.2
4.5 meter	95.6
6.0 meter	94.8 (this one mostly a guess due to limited clear view)
7.5 meter	90.1 (this reading not very believeable because only clear view
was from a very steep angle)
9.0 meter	94.8
all sonics higher than 9 meters were blocked by foliage, or angle of view was
too steep

I also attempted to shoot the hot film azmuths, but I couldn't get a clear view
of them either.

143: sonic, Site horizontal array, Thu 12-Apr-2007 12:09:40 PDT, boom heights on array (in low-wide position)
Measured on April 11, 2007, between 11:30-13:30 PDT.

A plot showing the estimated horiz location of each sonic is:

   http://www.mmm.ucar.edu/abl/chats/chats_images_wgps.html

Looking at a previous logbook entry that measured boom heights (#73) i
just realized that the measurement i used was slightly different than
that done previously. The theodolite was setup 19.8-0.2=19.6cm away
from a measuring tape that was stuck on the inner west tower section
of the array (note that the height of this baseseplate was about 2cm
higher than the central baseplate). The "-0.2" cm is since the "zero"
on the tape was at 20cm (i didn't realize this until after i had
measured it). The az angle of the tape was 208.18.40.

The theodolite was located approx in front of sonic #3 and could view
all sonics from this position (just behind tree row S2). Rather than
measure the top/bottom of the back of the sonic (as in logbook entry
#73), I estimated the location of the air space between the
transducers. And then swung the view over to the tape to get an
estimate of the height of the sonic.

To make the calculation of sonic height it was necessary to assume the
location of the sonic was at a fixed distance in front of the
measuring tape...this distance was assumed to be 1.58m (essentially
the distance of the sonic booms)....after assuming this, the
horizontal distance from the theodolite and each sonic could be
calculated (call this D'), and the heights were measured with the
following formula:

Projection of D' onto the Az to the Measuring Tape:

          L' = D' * cos(Az-Az_tape)

Difference in Distance between L' and L (distance to the meas tape):

          X = 19.6m - L'

Adjustment to the tape measurement (Z_tape) due to different horiz
distances:

          Z_sonic = Z_tape - X*(tan(90-Angle_vert))

---------------------
The measurements are:

Notes: (1) Angles are shown in Deg.min.sec
           (2) "Z_tape" is the height measured through the theodolite
by viewing the tape that was attached to the tower section.
           (3) "w/ Tape" is the distance from the ground to the bottom
strut of each 2m sonic (done by hand)

79: sonic, Site horizontal array, Sun 01-Apr-2007 15:56:26 PDT, Changed horizontal array dimensions
On Saturday, March 31, we spent the most of the day expanding the horizontal
array to a sonic spacing of 1.72 m and raising the array back up to 10 m.
First we lowered the array to near ground level for easy access, then we
spread out the sonics, and then we raised it up to the former height at the top
of the canopy. This was begun around 10-11 AM and completed at 8 PM.

73: sonic, Site horizontal array, Fri 30-Mar-2007 14:00:19 PDT, sonic heights
I measured the heights of sonics in narrow array by using a theodolite to
measure the elevation angles of the top and bottom of the vertical,
'forward' face of the sonic 'box'. The height of this face is ~4.33 cm.
The theodolite was at a height of 1.82 m and 33.35 m in front of
the sonic 'box'. The sonics were at heights of 1.99 and 2.99 m
above the ground.

At a distance of 33.35 m (sonics7b,7t), the elevation angles of the sonics
above horizontal would be atan((1.99-1.82)/33.35) = 20 minutes and
atan((2.99-1.82)/33.35) = 2 degs.

3/31/07: Note that the distance of the TRH is
(33.35+1.08)/cos(Azimuth - Azimuth[7])

Data are Deg.min.sec

Sonic height = 1.82m + 33.35m*tan(90 - (bottom+top)/2)/cos(Azimuth-Azimuth[7])

36: sonic, Site 30m tower, Thu 22-Mar-2007 16:58:09 PDT, 6 m sonic replacement
This morning, we replaced sonic 0740 at 6 m on vertical tower with sonic 0119.
Moved sonic 0740 to TRH boom at 1.70 m + 32 cm. Thus sonic is at a
height of 1.70 m + 32 cm + 5 cm = 2.07 m.

Plugged sonic 0740 into 1.5 m serial port, lower ttyS1.

17:55: plugged 1.5 m sonic, S/N 0673, back into lower ttyS1.

3/23: From missing kh2o data at 1.5m, I see that sonic 0740 was
       on ttyS1 from 11:20 - 17:55 PDT

35: sonic, Site 30m tower, Wed 21-Mar-2007 18:04:38 PDT, Changed 6 m sonic "dc" parameter to 0
I talked with Larry Jacobsen at CSI about sonic sampling problem. It appears
that the sonic just can't keep up with 60 Hz. It does not miss samples at
30 Hz and Larry speculates that we might fix this by narrowing the time window
whithin which the sonic looks for the received signal (my interpretation of
what he told me). The way to narrow the window is to decrease the DC
parameter to 0, which is by default 1 for 60 Hz, using the terminal command
'dc -' (dc + increments DC). Note that the default DC parameter is larger for
slower sampling rates.

So far I have been unsuccessful reducing the DC parameter for sonic 9b while
it is misbehaving. I could presumably do it for sonic 6m because it was
behaving at the time.

In the process, I did not get the sonic going again until 18:12.
34: sonic, Site horizontal array, Wed 21-Mar-2007 14:43:18 PDT, restarted sonic 9b
I did not restart sonic 9b when I was trying to dump the configuration this

suggests better behavior. Switched back to 60 Hz and data bad again.

Did this test between 1300 and 1330.
29: sonic, Site horizontal array, Tue 20-Mar-2007 10:18:11 PDT, replaced serial cable for sonic 9b
Steve and I replaced the serial cable for sonic 9b around 9:30 PDT, Tuesday,
March 20. Sonic 9b is still dropping samples.

3/21: This did not solve the missing sample problem.

25: sonic, Site 30m tower, Mon 19-Mar-2007 12:25:36 PDT, Installed 12.5 m sonic
We (Steve S, Ned Patton, Tom) installed another sonic at 12.5 m on the
vertical tower. S/N 0743, 12.17+0.05+0.32 = 12.54m

24: sonic, Site 30m tower, Mon 19-Mar-2007 11:50:48 PDT, swapped 4.5 and 6 m sonics
Swapped 4.5 m (ttyS5) and 6 m (S6) sonics on lower adam at 10:39 PDT.
So far the undersampling error has not re-occured.

Swapped cables back at 12:08 PDT

23: sonic, Site horizontal array, Mon 19-Mar-2007 11:46:23 PDT, swapped sonics 8b and 9b
Swapped sonics 8b (ttyS6) and 9b (S7) on east adam at 10:34 PDT.
The under-sampling error followed the sonic (and cable).

Swapped cables back at 12:03 PDT

12: sonic, Site horizontal array, Thu 15-Mar-2007 10:09:37 PDT, Sonic 9b missing data??
The diagnostic variable from sonic 9b is above 25 for several hours at a time.
Gordon notes that this indicates the 5th bit is set, which occurs when
the sonic counter increments by more than 1 between recieved samples.

10: sonic, Site horizontal array, Wed 14-Mar-2007 16:29:37 PDT, sonic 8b
The U component on sonic 8b appears to be perhaps 10 cm/s too low. However the second moments look okay, e.g. , , etc.

5: sonic, Site horizontal array, Wed 14-Mar-2007 10:43:35 PDT, Horizontal array data, dimensions
We began collecting data from the horizontal array yesterday afternoon using
12 V batteries to power the system, since we are waiting for power cable to
install AC power. The main purpose was to collect data to see how
things are working.

Around 4-5 pm PDT we raised the array to 10 m. It is in the narrow
configuration with a sonic spacing of 50 cm. The tops of the sonic booms
are at 10.6 m and 9.6 m. The sonics are numbered 1-9 from west to east.

3/16/07
The sonics themselves are at 9.65 m and 10.65 m.

3/26/07
Note that the small horizontal array spans one row opening. Every year,
the orchardists trim (hedge) every third row. The location of the small
horizontal array was trimmed two years ago, so is one of the densest row
openings. The wide array will span two rows, one trimmed last year (east)
and the other trimmed two years ago (west).

3/27/07
Discovered today that the 7th sonic from the west is at the mid-point
between tree rows. Trees immediately south of the west array are 7.36 m apart.
