Protecting ocean health is a health care plan for us for generations to come. A healthy ocean means healthy people, healthy economies and healthy places. 10 Simple actions can help protect ocean health:
- Reduce the amount of chemicals and plastics you use that might find their way into the coastal environment and waterways
- Preserve biodiversity by not buying coral jewelry or other products that have been harvested from coral reefs
- Maintain septic systems, pick up animal waste and properly dispose of it, and use waterproof covers over diapers when swimming
- Look for alternatives to harmful pesticides for use in homes, use non-toxic, safe insect repellents
- Promote clean waters through fuel reduction and buying locally
- Learn more about where your seafood comes from and support sustainable fisheries
- Support marine wildlife protection by keeping a safe distance and observing and not disturbing
- Pick up trash when you are at the beach or lake
- Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
- Always think about how our actions on land could be linked to the sea
