DAILY REPORT FOR June 7
+++++++++++++++++++++++

WEATHER: sunny and clear. low is 16C and high today is 33C.

IOP: BL with king Air, Falcon, P3

SONDES: 18z regular but delayed until about 19z because of waiting for reference
to be ready. This sonde was on a pole with a reference sonde, both
supported by a big ballon with 90 ft^3 helium in. But more heilum
is needed for this combination, the ascending rate is only about
	2 m/s in this case.
21z sonde for BL field support

MAPR: interesting double-layer structure with wave appearance was shown
at 2-4km, 03z to 11z, which accompanied by significant wind shear.
did rim_rass experiement for about half hour, see radar tklog

MISC: check with S-pol, their dish antenna for wireless comm. points roughly
at homestead. So, the antenna orientation on both end looks fine,
the signal strength may be an enviromental effect.
The new pre-amp works beautifully today, signals strength is about 95dB
on the ground and about 50dB towarding 100mb.
Hal and Junhung did a reference sonde with us.
show Balaj and Palow how to make a sounding

DAILY REPORT FOR June 6
+++++++++++++++++++++++

WEATHER: sunny and clear. low is 12C and high today is 27C. The wind is pretty
constant throughout the day with average of 5 m/s.

IOP: BL with Falcon flew above homestead.

SONDES: 18z and 1939z, the later one was a test flight for the new pre-amp.

MAPR: wind shears were observed at abotu 1.2km after 12z, lots of interesting
features (wave motion, KH billows) were shown on FMCW plots, some
of them can also be shown on RIM plot too. These layer structures
seems to well correlated with the wind shear.

MISC: Lou came in this afternoon to replace pre-amp of the sounding system
	and did a test flight.
the signal strength of wireless link is as low as 10 dB, checking
the dish by eye, did see obvious disorientation. will monitor
	the signal strength.
Hal and Jounghung came to visit.
Visitors from U of Missouri came to homestead.

WEATHER: cloudy in the morning and starts to clear up in the afternoon, but
	 still partly cloudy.

IOP: down day

SONDES: 18z regular and 19z which lou came to test the glass system, but 19z
one did well. The ground receiver lost the satellite track after
about 780 mb for 18z flight. There was a period signals were down
to zero, the ERR light on the rack is on since then.

MAPR: restart MAPR at about 1530 and MAPR works fine. design a new mode
called wind_rim_rain_comp, which should be used during a thunderstorm.
The purpose is to verify the high resolution wind by alternating
two modes, wind_rain300mode_4freq2b and wind_rain100mod. But be aware
that mapr probably won't be able to catch up after a couple hours,
because # of gates was a lot in both modes.

MISC: Lou came in this afternoon did a test sounding and bring a UPS which
is going to be used by network computer.
A new version of Aspen was installed today.

SONDES: 03, 09z requested by NASA SRL group, 15z, 18z, 21, 00z were requested
to support today's mission. The 00z sonde hit the groud after
it was released. Other sondes have good results.

MAPR: good signals up to 3km at noon. and the variations of the top
of boundary layer matches FMCW measurements, such as around 18z.

MISC: Ned updated RS80 folder on glass and slove the coefficient problem.

IOP: BL mission

SONDES: 18z. glass was hung for a few second and generate odd points like
minus pressure. This should be the reason to cause weired skew-t
on the display. signals are not stable and lost signal totally at
about 100mb. The antenna gain is still relativey low. check antenna
connection and hope it gets better tomorrow.

MAPR: works well today. signals and winds are up to 2km. KH billow like
structures were observed around 1230~1330 UT around 3~4km. However,
the signals strength is too low for RIM to perform reasonable results.
try to decrease the PRT and increase NCI (save in wind200mode_4freq)
in order to improve the SNR. However, it gets worse, the first gate
was extremely low and can't observe as high as using old parameters.
Therefore, switch to old mode called wind200mode_4freq_old.

MISC: FMCW did not transmit only receiving till 20UT today. Steve and Gordon
from UMASS tried to isolate the pproblem of horizontal shown in their
	images.
Tian and Dotto went to S-pol this afternoon.

WEATHER: sunny and partly low clouds. wind picks up in the afternoon.

IOP: BL mission, king air was flying over homestead site

SONDES: 15z, 18z, and 21z. the 18z sonde was not showing wind (999.9) when
it's on ground although the # of satellites are OK for all three.
The problem was sloved by restart the soundign process.
The wind for 21z sonde was locked up due to 0 satellite received
on the ground receiver. Called Ned and Lou, the only way to fix
it is to reclcye power on the rack, however, the data will be lost.
So, I leave the sonde till the end. Therefore, no wind for 21z
sonde for most of time. In addition, the signal strength for 21z
	is relatively weak.
The new glass software worked after repeat the process of "coefficient
failed" three time for each sounding.

MAPR: work well today. wind_rass mode since yesterday. Signals were up to about
	2 km.

MISC: maprlab was hanging and was fixed by rebooting.
NASA lidar groups tried to communicate with King Air by radio and shut
off lidars when the airplan approached. However, the pilot on King
Air did not notice us when king air approached. Instaed, the king air
was flying about 500m away from the homestead.
A snake was spooted near the toilet in the morning.

IOP: BL mission planned but was cancelled later, falcon tests flight

SONDES: launched 18z, requested a 21z sonde by NASA SBL
Neb did a reference sonde with the 18z sounding.
Lou came in this afternoon to install the new Glass software.

MAPR: MAPR stopped last night at about 2300UT (May 27), restart wind_rass
mode this morning and run well after. Two sondes can be clearly seen
on the mapr plot. Nothing particularly interesting today.

MISC: Dave Carlson and Mike Danille came to visit this afternoon.

WEATHER: thunderstorm, rainning and lighting all day.

IOP: BL mission,

SONDES: launched at 18z, wind is on and off all time may be due to the lighting.
	balloon pops at about 100mb

MAPR: test high-resolution wind using rim, 50m (single frequency) and 300m
(rim) modes were alternated every 2 min for about an hour during
the storm. However, the range and velocity aliasing may be a problem.

MISC: the mud road is really sleaky and sticky, MIPS and one of Jeep from NASA
were stuck on the road. They were finally abl to get out about 6pm.

IOP: BL mission, King Air flew above the homestead

SONDES: launched at 14z, 18z, 2130z, 02z, last two sondes were requested
	 by NASA Raman lidar

MAPR: Run continous rass for an hour in the afternoon and wind+rass (each
with 2 min) mode for 2 hrs. RASS signals are good up to 1.2 km
sometime. Fix RIM process by changing the in.dat
	file in ~/monitor/fca_2/.

IOP: CI mission, focused on the east TX and west OK, not homestead site

SONDES: launched at 18z, sounding show the atmopshere dry out at about 1.8km
	 above ground

MAPR: good signals and wind measurements up to about 2km, matching the sounding
results. MAPR is running in M-freq mode and seemed OK.
Modify Bill's IDL plotting routine to improve the Capon images.

MISC: check mapr, everying is tighted up OK.
Reprocess the D file of sounding D200205230140 by modifying the M file.
the original M file was saved as copy_of_M**., the new D file looked

SONDES: using the old regulator seems working. launched sondes at 18z and 21z.
the 21z sonde do not have wind for most of the time, signals jump
	a lot.

MAPR: start wind_rim mode at 15:56 through the day. turn the RASS tms off

WEATHER: gusty at surface all day (15-17 m/s), some cirrus clouds

IOP: CI mission dry line moved back and forth between S-pol and homestead site,
MIPS, MGLASS, DOWs, are depolyed. P3, King air were flying.

SONDES: plan to launch starting at 1pm to 9m LT every 2 hours, but we miss
1pm sonde because of the software problem and broken of the helium
regulator. The software problem was sloved by restarting the computer
and receiver. To make sure recycling the power of receiver seemed to
be the key. We tried to use the new regulator for the sondes at 5pm
and 7pm, the 5pm one looks OK, but the 7pm sonde was lost satelitte
track most of time and pops out only at about 670mb. The reason is
not sure. We launch another sonde a few minute after 7pm. But not
enough helium was put into the ballon. So, the sonde hit the ground
when we release it and no wind measurement. The ascending rate is
rediculous. We killed it at 8pm and get ready for the next lanch.
The 9pm sonde works and we switch back the old regulator to have
the right gauge of helium. We have to use the skew driver to push
the valve very hard to make it work.
PS: It's getting harder and harder to lanch ballon in such a high
wind condition, we lost at least 4 ballons because the wind
blow ballons out of the bag and balloon just pops
9pm sonde has problems too. The raw data look OK on the screen, but
appear to be -999 in the D file. Look at the M file, it is OK, but
there are two odd points about where the D file start to generate
	 -999.

MAPR: The boundary grows up to above 4km in the late afternoon. The 5-min wind
measurements look good, but for some reasons, the wind in 24hr display
looks odd, only a few wind bars were shown. Sharp gradient of SNR was
shown at about 800 m, which does not look like really. possible
	cause by the ground clutter.
