353: pressure, Site horizontal array, Wed 06-Jun-2007 16:57:04 PDT, pressure port height
Pressure port height = (2.38+2.455)/2 = 2.42 m. It is 67 cm north of sonics
9b & 9t.
351: trh, Site horizontal array, Wed 06-Jun-2007 12:56:39 PDT, Upper TRH on array dead
The upper TRH (/dev/ttyS15 at west) died during the array lowering
at around 10;50 LT.

The lower TRH (TRH704) works in port 15, so the problem must
be in the cable or the TRH. Ned pulled the TRH out of
the boom and reseated the connected, but still nothing.

Will work on it in the base trailer.

4:25-4:35: Replaced with TRH 004 from 3 m level on vertical tower

350: infrastructure, Site horizontal array, Wed 06-Jun-2007 12:52:36 PDT, Lowered array to low position
Lowered sonc array to 2,3 m position from 9:15 - 9:36, June 6.
Moved TRH's to lower positions, finishing at 10 am

Sonic boom heights on east = 2.94 and 1.93 m; on west = 2.95 & 3.95 m
TRH boom heights = 2.46 & 3.45 m.

335: pressure, Site horizontal array, Sun 03-Jun-2007 12:41:20 PDT, fast pressure
Looked at power spectra of fast p this morning and decided that the differences
seen between the vertical tower and the horizontal array are due to
the differences in resolution of the plots of the two variables which have
different units (mb and volts). The differences in resolution are caused by
lack of low frequency response of the usfs pressure system which gives a
higher resolution in the plot.

333: trh, Site horizontal array, Sat 02-Jun-2007 11:16:59 PDT, Moved horizontal array TRH's
Moved TRH's to mid-canopy from 9:44-10:15, completing the configuration change. Boom heights = 5.41 & 6.41 m
332: infrastructure, Site horizontal array, Sat 02-Jun-2007 11:13:34 PDT, Lowered array to mid-canopy
On June 2, from 9:10 - 9:28 we lowered the sonic array to mid-canopy.
The sonic booms are at
4.88 and 5.90 m on the east and
4.90 and 5.89 m on the west.

From 9:44 - 10:15 we moved the TRH's to mid-canopy, completing the
configuration change.
328: whatever, Site horizontal array, Fri 01-Jun-2007 13:16:26 PDT, Array Climbed
1jun07 10:05 - 10:30 array climbed

Cut off tail of pressure port tubing to help lowering the array
tomorrow without impacting the tree.
Also Don went up to double check the location of the leave area
index measurement marks.
319: pressure, Site horizontal array, Wed 30-May-2007 17:37:03 PDT, p' sensor hose hooked up on array umbilical cord, climbing array
We placed the p' sensor and hose today on the narrow, high array. It is located
~ 2cm west of the 9b and 9t booms and ~ 50cm to the north of the sonic centroid.
The p' sensor is located at the midpoint between the sonics - by eye.

This will need to be measured when in the low position (using the ladder
perhaps).

Array climbing and p' apparatus manipulation/install began at 1212LT and
p' then became 'good' at 1500LT.

318: trh, Site horizontal array, Wed 30-May-2007 17:35:04 PDT, Fan replaced in TRH.array.top
30may07 15:40 ... 16:42 Center tower TRH fan

The noisy fan in TRH.top.array was replaced between 1540 and 16450LT.
After moving to narrow, and raising the array yesterday, we observed that
this fan became noisy. Today after installing the pressure port on the
array, this little devil began to really complain, so at about 15:40 we
took it down to swap in the best available fan we could find.

Note: once apart, it was apparent that the fan blades had come off
and were in the rather dusty exhaust tube.
This may have happened during the move yesterday because the fan had
appeared ok, and Greg hadn't seen any issues in the data.

By 16:40 the sensor was back up with a good fan.

316: kh2o, Site horizontal array, Wed 30-May-2007 09:53:43 PDT, kryptons and Licors cleaned during array narrowing 29 May
kh2o and LiCor window cleaning during array narrowing procedure yesterday.
314: sonic, Site horizontal array, Tue 29-May-2007 20:26:21 PDT, narrow configuration measurements - 2b-3b are 51cm apart all others near 50cm
We measured the distance between the yokes in the new, narrow configuration.
All yokes were placed correctly and accurately centered within the tape markers
from phase I.

All yokes were separated by 50cm +-3mm EXCEPT the distance between yokes
2b and 3b were found to be 50.8mm. We believe this was a measurement error
during Phase I and decided to leave it in place for Phase-to-Phase consistency
(discussion among Lenschow, Patton, Poulos).
312: infrastructure, Site horizontal array, Tue 29-May-2007 09:08:07 PDT, Array shutdown and narrowed, brought up in 'high, narrow' (9.6, 10.6) position.
adn east and west at 0909LT. Systems halted as well.

Array narrowing procedure began at 0910LT. (Patton, Militzer, Poulos, Lenschow)
Hotfilms removed.
p' mounted on array in umbilical.
At or a few minutes after 1648LT first powered up east, west and hfarray.
Checked data_stats at 1700.
All look good (good data rates and all sensors present).
Rate of file growth is correct (heading for isff_ 4 hrly files of ~852Mb).

Plotting of raw data from array ...
Sonics - Look fine, 5 min avg, high-rate, spectra
Kryptons - ditto
Licors - ditto
T/RHs - T/RH.top fan is 'chattering' will eval tomorrow
p' - need longer second arm - will put up tomorrow after visit to hardware

Winds 'locked in' good wind direction ~ 1900LT and the array was up at that
time (in place in 'high' position.

high.xml implemented, with new times and configs.xml updated. server ands
statsproc restarted.

6/3/07
Ned reports that a diagonal bar was placed on the horizontal array from the
head of sonic 5b to the yoke location of sonic 5t to reduce the sag of
the lower horizontal line of sonics.

308: infrastructure, Site horizontal array, Mon 28-May-2007 10:43:22 PDT, Sonic boom elev angles and boom azimuths (with declination) low-wide array
Low-wide sonic boom azimuths were taken today and (below) sonic elevation angles
from theodolite. We also measured the p' sensor elevation and azimuth.

Sonic boom elevation angles 1100-1330LT - low wide position
--------------------------- -----------
The theodolite was aligned carefully with boom 4b. It was placed where we could
see all of the sonics where the struts join the box (the box with the sloped
faces, where these measurements were made last time). The theodolite was then
brought to dead level (elev angle of 90 degrees).
Height of theodolite in this position: 1.58m agl (measured twice).
Height on sonic/LiCor apparatus: 1.632m (metallic fastener, bottom)

(NOTE: This indicates a 5cm increase in the height of the ground at the
theodolite location relative to the earth immediately below the sonic. This is
sensible be cause of the larger amount of walking activity at the sonic, and
we note pooling of water during sprinkling near the sonics.)

Distance from theodolite to the sonic centroid is: 9.842m

(NOTE: We measured 10.3m north to vertical post on Licor mount post and 0.458m
back south to the sonic centroid. 10.3m was at the dead level position of the
theodolite targeted to the metallic piece on the sonic/Licor apparatus)

Based on additional measurement in the vertical of 0.318m to sonic centroid from
metallic piece at 1.632m)

Height of sonic 4b centroid as measured above local ground level: 1.95m

(NOTE: Based on earlier boom height measurements, logbook 291 and 52, this
indicates sag of sonic boom 4b of 5cm [slightly more because we measured at
the strut-joining-box not out at the claws - one could project that distance])

285: hot films, Site horizontal array, Wed 23-May-2007 18:39:54 PDT, hfarray down for spraying, array work
23may07 16:30-18:30 hfarray stopped

Lowered array to remove hot-films.
Ptec #1 removed, Ptec#11 installed.
We decided to raise the array back to mid position and keep the central tower
at that height because the winds look good for overnight into tomorrow.
On Friday we'll need to restart and lower the array to 'low.'
283: infrastructure, Site horizontal array, Tue 22-May-2007 16:50:56 PDT, Partial array lowering to 'low' position on Wed afternoon.
In order to expedite array lowering to the 'low' position planned for late
Thursday (> 12 hours after the pesticide spraying on Wed night but before or
just as the winds turn favorable south) we will lower the instruments on the
central tower of the array. This is the most time consuming part of the process
and therefore, we believe, provide more data at the 'low' position during
favorable flow.

The ability to filter winds at the current configuration (mid height) will be
sacrificed therefore for the period late Wed - late Thurs, but the winds are
forecast to be unfavorable during this period.

If the weather forecast alters we may alter our plan.

Completed 23 May 16:30-18:30LT.

264: data system, Site horizontal array, Sat 19-May-2007 11:18:31 PDT, West pocketec 15 May
The pocketec disk at west started to report disk errors when
reading archive files for April 10th, as part of the background
rsync download.

The disk was swapped and mounted on the aster laptop, on May 15.

rsync-ing these 5 files to isff1 resulted in hard disk errors;

west_20070410_120000.dat
west_20070411_000000.dat
west_20070412_000000.dat
west_20070412_120000.dat
west_20070414_120000.dat

All other files on the pocketec, up to May 15 were ok, and
copied to isff1.

After the initial rsync, then an fsck was performed on the disk
with the non-destructible, read-write, bad block scanning option:

fsck -f -c -c /dev/sdc1

This creates a badblock list and re-maps the files to good blocks.

As a result the above 5 files on the pocketec
were then readable without errors and the 5 files were rsync-'d
to isff1 again.

The fixed files exhibit far fewer bad-sample errors when read
with data_stats than the original rsync'd ones. It appears
that the portions of the files with bad blocks were replaced
with 0's.

246: hot films, Site horizontal array, Thu 17-May-2007 13:54:08 PDT, hfarray Pocketec took some time to come up...
The hfarray data system came up but the Pocketec did not during the array
lowering process (from high to middle position). hfarray was halted at 0909LT
after operating from 1219LT 11 May until 0909LT 17 May (continuous, all full
sized files).

Came online of its own at 1403LT 17 May after array was repositioned in the
middle configuration.

245: infrastructure, Site horizontal array, Thu 17-May-2007 13:46:42 PDT, Array lowered to middle position
Commencing at ~0915LT the array (hfarray halted at 0909LT) was lowered to
it's middle position where
the 'bottom' and 'top' sonics are at 4.9m and 5.9m, respectively. The hotfilms
TRHs and p' sensor were moved as well on the central tower (along with the
central tower sonics, of course).

We were off the array with everything in position as of 1347LT..

Branches were cut near some of the sonics in this position to avoid direct
contact with the sonic/Licor/krypton.

The hfarray disk (ptec#7) was switched out for a different Pocketec as it
was 50% full. The newly installed pocketec did not come up as /var/tmp/usbdisk
and so see the other hotfilm logbook entry today.

240: licor, Site horizontal array, Tue 15-May-2007 17:43:26 PDT, LiCor h2o h2o.4b.9.6m
The h2o.4b.9.6m is elevated relative to the other LiCors. This author suspects
this is the 'old' LiCor. The LiCor manual states that the lab Cal of the LiCor
should be very good for at least a year giving some credence to this idea if
in fact 4b LiCor is the one we've owned for some time and the others are all
the new ones. We will check.

We found logbook entries 8, 9 and 11 re: LiCor's which confirm this calibration
issue.

Recommend a cal by Dr. Britt Stephens upon return.

226: pressure, Site horizontal array, Mon 14-May-2007 17:12:04 PDT, p' (ncar) on array, heights/distances, on array 1530-1630LT.
Following up on entry 191 additional measurements of the p' sensor (adjacent
to sonics 4b/4t) were made as follows:

Since the pressure probe is centered between the upper and lower small diameter
plates of the p' probe I estimate the height of the p' probe (sensor proper)
at 10.105m.

* 10.13 m to the upper face of the boom holding the p' infrastructure (which
hangs down below the boom, off the lower face, in an 'L' shape, see pics). The upper face of the boom is just a bit below, in a horizontal plane, the upper
small diameter disc on the p' probe.

* 10.085 m to the lower face of the p' boom. This face is level with the lower
small disc of the p' probe.

* 10.06 m to the top of the bottom large diameter disc of the p' system.

* 0.495 m is the distance in the E-W direction between the p' probe boom
and the 4b sonic boom.

Combined with angles measured from the photos, the length to the probe
from the boom along the mount pipe of the p' infrastructure the spatial
distance from the p' probe to the centroid of the sonic claws can be
calculated.

We could not measure the pipe (boom-probe length) or angle between the boom
and the pipe.

This should be done when the array is lowered.

192: pressure, Site horizontal array, Sat 12-May-2007 12:47:20 PDT, p' sensor moved to array east side of west portion - MUST BE MOVED BEFORE ARRAY HT CHANGES
The p' sensor is now plugged into ttyS16 on the west NIDAS (array). Data
began recording at 1630LT at 15Hz.

The p' sensor is mounted in a similar position in plan view as on
the tall tower. It is half-way between the sonics (or 10.1 m agl) and about 30cm
northeast of the line through the sonic claw centroid. We have taken pictures.

It is not on the central tower as planned! The central tower position had
guy wires that crossed immediately in front of the p' sensor. These guy
wires do not cross in front of the sonics of interest so we moved it. This
creates a bit more logistical hassle during array moving.

IMPORTANT: Must be moved out of the way before moving the array.

Ned's email
-----------

Wanted to send you some pictures of where the pressure port has currently been deployed
(see attached).

The first picture is taken from the ground. Starting from the top of the figure, the
first sonic is 3b, then you see 4t, 4b, 5t and 5b. This picture is intended to show you
the N-S location of the port compared with the sonics. It is located about 30cm behind
the sampling volumes of sonics 4b and 4t. (small side note: this picture also shows
the new location for the web-cam), i.e. at the top of the central tower in the array,
above the hauling boom).

The other pictures are intended to give you a feel for the E-W and vertical placement
with respect to sonics 4b and 4t. Vertically the port is pretty much centered between
the sonics. The E-W placement is about 15cm east of the sonics.

The boom holding the pressure port is currently mounted on the east leg of the west
array. Since this is a main climbing face, to minimize the impact the mount is centered
between rungs and the 'large' side of the mount is inside the tower.

Originally, we had discussed placing the pressure port between 5b and 5t. However, Greg
and I chose to move the pressure port to the current location because of the guy wires
that criss-cross immediately below sonic 5t (see the first attached picture for
reference). After we installed the pressure port at this original location on the
central tower, we decided to move it to the current location because of the potential
for high-frequency contamination associated with two wires which crossed about 10cm in
front of the pressure port.

We can adjust any and all of these locations/choices. Please let us know if you have
any comments, concerns and/or suggestions.

The periods with a good wind direction longer than 15 minutes total
177 hours 50 minutes with 49 periods longer than 1 hour.

182: pressure, Site horizontal array, Mon 07-May-2007 14:02:34 MDT, p.ncar at ha added to config
To prepare for Ned/Greg/John's move of my sensor to the horizontal array, I've
updated all the configs. The new port assignment for my sensor is east,
port 15. When this change is made, it will report ID#350 on east (and ID#1130
on lower will disappear).

I've also set the height values to midway between the sonics (2.5, 5.4, 10.1m).

175: data system, Site horizontal array, Wed 25-Apr-2007 10:40:16 MDT, lost data on April 23
There is a data gap at both east and west adams on april 23, 20:50 - 22:55 PDT

6m: 1
10m: 2 (but at least one wire is now broken and being repaired)
14m: 3

Since bridge settings are probe-specific, the probes should be reinstalled
at the beginning of Phase II in this order. Note that 10m.vt will now be
the spare (4) and will require changing the bridges settings.

These probes are in boxes on the shelf in the computer room of the base, to the
left of the printer.

Also note that some method of protecting the connector joint on at least the
triple probes from rain should be devised. (This was perhaps the reason
for an apparently dead signal from the 10m probe.)

164: sonic, Site horizontal array, Thu 19-Apr-2007 13:30:40 MDT, horizontal array structure beefed up
Aril 15th , 2007
I added wooden dowels to the 'EMT' type tubing junctions in an attempt to
stiffen up the transition from one pipe to the other, with some, but not a lot,
of success. Most of the arrays look OK, with a minimum amount of "sag" to the
inner sonics, but for some reason, the lower east array had a large sag
between the inner and outer sonics. My hope was that a stiffer pipe, or better
junction between the two pieces of pipe would improve this situation, and it
did, but not by a whole lot.
The heights of the sonics need to be measured again.
The arrays that were modified are both upper and lower on west, and then
lower on east.
Upper on east was not modified because the dowel would not fit into the EMT
pipe.

143: sonic, Site horizontal array, Thu 12-Apr-2007 12:09:40 PDT, boom heights on array (in low-wide position)
Measured on April 11, 2007, between 11:30-13:30 PDT.

A plot showing the estimated horiz location of each sonic is:

   http://www.mmm.ucar.edu/abl/chats/chats_images_wgps.html

Looking at a previous logbook entry that measured boom heights (#73) i
just realized that the measurement i used was slightly different than
that done previously. The theodolite was setup 19.8-0.2=19.6cm away
from a measuring tape that was stuck on the inner west tower section
of the array (note that the height of this baseseplate was about 2cm
higher than the central baseplate). The "-0.2" cm is since the "zero"
on the tape was at 20cm (i didn't realize this until after i had
measured it). The az angle of the tape was 208.18.40.

The theodolite was located approx in front of sonic #3 and could view
all sonics from this position (just behind tree row S2). Rather than
measure the top/bottom of the back of the sonic (as in logbook entry
#73), I estimated the location of the air space between the
transducers. And then swung the view over to the tape to get an
estimate of the height of the sonic.

To make the calculation of sonic height it was necessary to assume the
location of the sonic was at a fixed distance in front of the
measuring tape...this distance was assumed to be 1.58m (essentially
the distance of the sonic booms)....after assuming this, the
horizontal distance from the theodolite and each sonic could be
calculated (call this D'), and the heights were measured with the
following formula:

Projection of D' onto the Az to the Measuring Tape:

          L' = D' * cos(Az-Az_tape)

Difference in Distance between L' and L (distance to the meas tape):

          X = 19.6m - L'

Adjustment to the tape measurement (Z_tape) due to different horiz
distances:

          Z_sonic = Z_tape - X*(tan(90-Angle_vert))

---------------------
The measurements are:

Notes: (1) Angles are shown in Deg.min.sec
           (2) "Z_tape" is the height measured through the theodolite
by viewing the tape that was attached to the tower section.
           (3) "w/ Tape" is the distance from the ground to the bottom
strut of each 2m sonic (done by hand)

100: hot films, Site horizontal array, Thu 05-Apr-2007 12:08:59 PDT, Replaced central hotfilm
The probe we removed from the central tower yesterday (SF6) did appear to be
broken when I poked at it this morning. Tom is taking it to Boulder to be
sent for repair.

We installed a new probe (SF2) at about 1140, but had the wrong DIP switch
settings. Settings were corrected 1239 and the signal looks okay.

**** WARNING ****
The probe appeared to be slightly rotated, so I reoriented it more vertically.
I estimate that it was rotated ~5 degrees, with the bottom more Easterly than
the top. I realize that the calibration procedure may have to be altered.

P.S. 4/10/07:
Under microscope inspection of SF6, Greg and SteveS found a minute separation
between one end of the hot film and its support.
99: hot films, Site horizontal array, Thu 05-Apr-2007 12:05:18 PDT, hfarray channel test
~1147: tested hotfilm channels by shorting each input sequentially for 10s each.
The order was: (frontpanel input channel) 0,1,2,3,4.

I'll look at the data to see if this ended up being correct.

Note that the central hotfilm (ch 2) was reporting (incorrect, but fluctuating)
voltages at about 2V.

[THE RESULTS!!! (in GMT, using:
data_dump -d 6 -s 11 -p hfarray_20070405_183000.dat | more)]

This file just happened to have a data dropout example, that shifted the
data from being reported correctly (broken hotfilm voltage of 2.6V was on
[0-based] ch2), to being shifted by 2 columns.

The shorts of frontpanel inputs 0,1,2,3,4 appeared in data columns 3,4,0,1,2
(during the period 18:48:37-18:50:18). Note that the shorts appear as "nan"
and that disconnected inputs float to >3V.

Here is a sample data dump from hfarray. It appears that the last channel
may be bad. It is highter than the rest and more constant with time.

[After talking with Gordon, this Viper was rebooted ~1000?? and the channel
order changed! Now that we've replaced the probe, it isn't easy to dump these
data.]

97: trh, Site horizontal array, Wed 04-Apr-2007 17:48:46 PDT, TRH heights

96: sonic, Site horizontal array, Wed 04-Apr-2007 17:45:22 PDT, Moved array down to 5.5 m height
4/4/07

Starting mid-morning, aaround 10:55 PDT we moved the array down to 5.5 m.

The sonic heights on the central tower are 5.86 = 0.05 = 5,91m and
4.90 + 0.05 = 4.95 m.

Finished moving the array around 17:15 PDT

93: trh, Site horizontal array, Tue 03-Apr-2007 10:53:02 PDT, horizontal array TRH's
Don and I compared the horizontal array TRH's to those on the vertical tower
in an attempt to determine which of the two might be out of calibration.
The results were somewhat inconclusive, but with a tendency for the TRH at
the greater height to perhaps be reading too low.

Perhaps a more definitive answer could be obtained by first filtering the
data by wind direction.

This afternoon, we swapped the 6 m TRH (s/n 206) with the top (10.6 m)
TRH (s/n 101) on the horizontal array:
14:00 removed 6 m TRH
14:15 mounted in at 10.6 m on horizontal array
14:35 mounted 10.6 m TRH from horizontal array at 6 m

Don and I concluded that S/N 206 is reading 0.1 degree too low

Removed 10.6 m TRH (101) from the vertical tower at 16:03.
Removed 9.6 m TRH (704) from the horizontal array at 16:11
Moved 6 m TRH (206) to 9.6 m on horizontal array at 16:16
Reinstalled 10.6 m TRH (101) at 10.6 m at 16:18
Installed 9.6m TRH (704) at 6 m on vertical tower at 16:23

The 9.6m TRH looks okay, so swapped sonics back to previous
configuration:

Removed 9.6 m (704) from vertical tower at 17:30
Required some repair of joint between aspirator and electronics
Removed 10.6 m (101) from horizontal array at 17:35
Lost track of time
Moved 6 m (206) up to 10.6 m
Mounted 9.6 m (704) back at 9.6 m
Mounted 10.6 m (101) at 6 m on vertical tower
Finished at 18:05

Final configuration:

6 m on vertical tower = original 10.6 m on horizontal array (101)
which is ~0.1 degree too low.

9.6 m on horizontal array is original (704)

10.6 m on horizontal array came from 6 m on vertical tower (206)

cleaning up the cable tangle that resulted from the reconfiguration of the
array. From the sonic "diag" it appears that Keith did this work from
~9:00 - 10:30 April 2.

79: sonic, Site horizontal array, Sun 01-Apr-2007 15:56:26 PDT, Changed horizontal array dimensions
On Saturday, March 31, we spent the most of the day expanding the horizontal
array to a sonic spacing of 1.72 m and raising the array back up to 10 m.
First we lowered the array to near ground level for easy access, then we
spread out the sonics, and then we raised it up to the former height at the top
of the canopy. This was begun around 10-11 AM and completed at 8 PM.

73: sonic, Site horizontal array, Fri 30-Mar-2007 14:00:19 PDT, sonic heights
I measured the heights of sonics in narrow array by using a theodolite to
measure the elevation angles of the top and bottom of the vertical,
'forward' face of the sonic 'box'. The height of this face is ~4.33 cm.
The theodolite was at a height of 1.82 m and 33.35 m in front of
the sonic 'box'. The sonics were at heights of 1.99 and 2.99 m
above the ground.

At a distance of 33.35 m (sonics7b,7t), the elevation angles of the sonics
above horizontal would be atan((1.99-1.82)/33.35) = 20 minutes and
atan((2.99-1.82)/33.35) = 2 degs.

3/31/07: Note that the distance of the TRH is
(33.35+1.08)/cos(Azimuth - Azimuth[7])

Data are Deg.min.sec

Sonic height = 1.82m + 33.35m*tan(90 - (bottom+top)/2)/cos(Azimuth-Azimuth[7])

67: trh, Site horizontal array, Thu 29-Mar-2007 08:24:35 PDT, Fixed lower TRH
Yesterday Steve fixed the lower TRH by unplugging and plugging back in the
50Y at the board.
66: trh, Site horizontal array, Tue 27-Mar-2007 16:13:57 PDT, Moved TRH's down to new array height
Lowered TRH's down to 2.46 - 0.47 - 1.99 and 2.46 - 0.47 = 2.99 m.
Finished at 15:25, started a little while after finished lowering horizontal
array and coiling ropes.

65: sonic, Site horizontal array, Tue 27-Mar-2007 16:09:35 PDT, lowered horizontal array to 1.99 and 2.99 m
Lowered horizontal array to sonics at 2.94 + 0.05 = 2.99 m and
1.94 + 0.05 = 1.99 m. Started at 14:40 PDT, March 27, and finished at
14:50 PDT.

64: sonic, Site horizontal array, Tue 27-Mar-2007 11:50:49 PDT, good wind direction inventory
Calculated inventory of good wind directions for the median of
the 9 upper sonics in each configuration.

For the 10 m, 0.5 m horizontal array spacing, we have 60 hours 15 minutes
of wind (continuous periods of 20 minutes or more) within +/- 30 degrees
of south. The longest period was more than 11 hours and there are 15
periods of an hour or more.

For the 5 m, 0.5 m horizontal array spacing, we have 43 hours 5 minutes
of wind (continuous periods of 20 minutes or more) within +/- 30 degrees
of south. The longest period was almost 13 hours and there were 11 periods
of an hour or more.

For the 2.5 m, 0.5 m horizontal array spacing, we have 11 hours 40 minutes
of wind (continuous periods of 20 minutes or more) within +/- 30 degrees
of south. The longest period was over 3 hours and there are 4 periods
of an hour or more.

For the 10 m, 1.72 m horizontal array spacing, we have 35 hours, 55 minutes
of wind (continuous periods of 20 minutes or more) within +/- 30 degrees

20 minutes of good wind directions. The longest period was over 14 hours
and there are 8 periods of an hour or more.

For the 5 m, 0.5 m horizontal array spacing during PhII, we have 49 hours,
5 minutes of good wind directions. The longest period was over 8 hours
and there are 8 periods of an hour or more.

54: software, Site horizontal array, Sun 25-Mar-2007 16:42:29 PDT, fix dat.Vazimuth for new array heights
With new array heights, it is necessary to edit dat.Vazimuth in the file
chats.q in directory /usr/local/isff/projects/CHATS/ISFF/S:

Need to increase variables aa1 and aa2 by 18 for every new pair of
array heights. Note '36' corresponding to 2 array heights x 18 sonics.
Note that these might be other than exactly 180 if we had measured them.

    aa1 = rep(180,36) + 90
    aa2 = rep(180,36) + 90

Also need to increase the array name vector:

For addition to the logbook:

As of Mar 19, 19:36:28 UTC we're recording both
sensor data and photos on the new 720 Gbyte USB2 disk,
/media/isff1.

All previous CHATS data, and photos have been copied to it
from /data.

Current plans are to keep /media/isff1 permanently
mounted on the aster system.

A 400 Gbyte disk should arrive today. That will
be the backup disk. The plan is to do intermittent
copies to that disk, and bring it back to the hotel
for safe-keeping. With two backup disks, one could
be brought back to Boulder from time to time.

13: trh, Site horizontal array, Thu 15-Mar-2007 10:12:08 PDT, No 9.6m TRH data on horizontal array
We mounted the two TRH's on the center tower of the horizontal array yesterday.

The diagnostic variable from sonic 9b is above 25 for several hours at a time.
Gordon notes that this indicates the 5th bit is set, which occurs when
the sonic counter increments by more than 1 between recieved samples.

9: licor, Site horizontal array, Wed 14-Mar-2007 12:42:10 PDT, Licor 7500 CO2 data
The CO2 data from S/N 0813 is ~50 mmol/m^3 higher than the newer Licor 7500's
with S/N 1163-1166.

3/15: Gordon fixed parsing on Licor. Now CO2 data agree much better, but the
h2o data from 0813 are now ~1 gm/m^3 higher than the rest.

5: sonic, Site horizontal array, Wed 14-Mar-2007 10:43:35 PDT, Horizontal array data, dimensions
We began collecting data from the horizontal array yesterday afternoon using
12 V batteries to power the system, since we are waiting for power cable to
install AC power. The main purpose was to collect data to see how
things are working.

Around 4-5 pm PDT we raised the array to 10 m. It is in the narrow
configuration with a sonic spacing of 50 cm. The tops of the sonic booms
are at 10.6 m and 9.6 m. The sonics are numbered 1-9 from west to east.

3/16/07
The sonics themselves are at 9.65 m and 10.65 m.

3/26/07
Note that the small horizontal array spans one row opening. Every year,
the orchardists trim (hedge) every third row. The location of the small
horizontal array was trimmed two years ago, so is one of the densest row
openings. The wide array will span two rows, one trimmed last year (east)
and the other trimmed two years ago (west).

3/27/07
Discovered today that the 7th sonic from the west is at the mid-point
between tree rows. Trees immediately south of the west array are 7.36 m apart.
