374: trh, Site all, Tue 13-Nov-2007 15:08:53 MST, details for TRH S/N 101 and S/N 502
The chronology of the S/N101 and S/N 502 TRH sensors for CHATS is below.
Also see logbook entry 128. These two sensors were both determined to
require empirical corrections as described here:

 ------------------------------------------
 Date: Mon, 29 Oct 2007 12:37:24 -0600
 From: Tom Horst
 To: Sean Burns

 Sean:

I think that the original TRH at 6m was S/N 502, which we confirmed in
the lab had an error of -0.3133 C. Since we confirmed this error in the
lab, we should add an offset of 0.3133 from Mar 17 until Mar 21. Note
that this is an unusual circumstance where we know the magnitude and
 duration of an error.

A similar correction can be made to S/N 101 which was on the horizontal
array (upper) and was found in the lab to have an offset error of -0.099C.
Thus an offset of 0.099 should be added to the data for this sensor.

[details of the location of S/N 101 are below]

 --------------------------------------------

Chronology of sensors:

----------------S/N 101:

 - started on horiz array (upper position)

 - on 4/3 at 14:30 PDT, sn101 removed from ha/upper
and replaced with sn206 (LOG 93)

 - on 4/3 between 16:30-17:30 PDT, sn101 back in at
    ha upper position.(LOG 93)

 - on 4/3 at 18:00 PDT, sn101 moved to 6m on vt (LOG 93)

 - on 4/12 sn101 at 6m replaced with TRH sn502 fresh from recal
in Boulder, sn101 now becomes "spare" sensor (LOG 145)

 - on 5/2, sn101 was recalibrated in BOULDER.
(after this date correction is no longer necessary)

 - on 5/11 sn101 was put in at 14m (LOG 189)

 - sn101 stayed at 14m for the rest of the experiment.

---------------S/N 502:

 - started on vertical tower at 6m (LOG 128)

 - on 3/21, sn502 at 6m replaced with sn206 (LOG 31)

 - on 3/23, between 11:30-16:50 PDT, sn502 was put on the vertical tower
at 1.5m to test the humidity profile.

 - on 4/9, sn502 was recalibrated in Boulder/NCAR.
(after this date correction is no longer necessary)

 - on 4/12 sn502 deployed on vt at 6m (LOG 145)

 - on 5/22 sn502 was moved up to 7.5m (LOG 280)

325: leaf area index, Site all, Thu 31-May-2007 19:46:12 PDT, LAI profile
File 41 starts at East tower at 6:02 PM. Ends at 6:22 PM on 5/31/2007.

File 42 starts at West tower at 6:38 PM. Ends at 6:53 PM. Last value
is at 1 m height. That is, it seems I did one level too many coming down the
tower. The problem seems to be that as I descended from 6 m to 5 m, it seemed
that there was a marker missing at 5 m. That is, the next mark below 6 m
seemed to be 2 m lower, so I took a reading between the two marks, thinking thatthe mark at 5 m may have been rubbed out. I still don't know how this could
have happened, but I'm pretty sure that that is where the problem occurred.

On 6/01/07 I returned to the W tower and rechecked the markings on the tower.
There is no marking at the 5 m level; the markings at 4 and 6 m are there. So,
what I did last night seemed to have been the correct strategy. That is, I
interpolated between 4 and 6 m and took a reading at 5 m. So, I am now at a
loss as to where the extra reading occurred. Perhaps the read button was
accidentally pushed while traversing the tower.

File 43 starts at N tower at 7:11 PM. Ends at 7:34 PM.
Sonic at 6 m level has more blockage than sonic at 7.5 m. The sonic at
7.5 m is almost free of the canopy for a considerable distance upwind.
There's some branches to the S, but for a S wind, the flow does not have
a lot of restriction. In contrast, at 7.5 m, there's blockage a meter or
so upwind by branches.

303: irrigation, Site all, Sat 26-May-2007 13:04:55 PDT, Our section was watered
Watering began sometime overnight 25-26May. Based on the kryptons it appears
to have begun at 2330LT 25 May around the tower and around 0030LT 26 May near
the array. Based on the just-wetted status of the ground upon our arrival we
speculate also that it began around 0600LT 26May.

No water is getting in the rain gauge and so we cannot be sure.

261: leaf area index, Site all, Fri 18-May-2007 19:58:09 PDT, leaf area measurements
Took leaf area density measurements this evening 7:00-7:40pm LT

Data remains in the data logger.

File 35: bad data (remembering how to work the system)
File 36: east leg of east array
File 37: west leg of west array
File 38: 30m tower

All profiles were taken on the north side of the towers.

Occasional measurements locations on the east and west side
of the array were obstructed by leaves (i.e. leaves completely
covering the sensor). In this case, I used my other hand to
move the branch away so that those leaves were not covering
the sensor.

260: hot films, Site all, Fri 18-May-2007 16:47:44 PDT, hot-film voltages via data_dump
data_dump of ~ 10 hfarray...dat and hftower...dat files on Aster resulting
in finding values 'in-range' for all films (SFs 4,5,2,7,8 on array and TFs
1,4,3 on tower). The voltages are good.

The 'zeroed' channel (#6) has values over 3V.

*** Summary: The winds today are not from the appropriate direction but may
turn so overnight tonight or tomorrow. Last night we had an excellent example
of a stable boundary layer within the tower depth. It alternated from an
intra-canopy inversion of 10C, to a canopy top-29m inversion of ~6C and back to
an intra-canopy inversion of ~7C overnight. Wow!

Duke (Avissar) helicopter flew ~11-1715LT. Chin-Hoh Moeng to visit 18 May.

*** Summary: All systems go and ready for operations tomorrow.

*** Activities for today

1. p' location changed to east site of west part of array. The problem is
interference by guy wires that cross in front in the original central tower
array configuration. Pictures taken. Data functional 1630LT @15Hz on
   west ttyS16.
2. Fan on TRH.3m tweaked to allow better spin and now functional with no
notable T' in profile plots. Good for operations. Installed 0940LT.
3. kryp.14m evaluated as fine 1005LT (connections good and currently
functional). Also cleaned. Will continue to monitor but judged OK for
ops. Will be replaced with spare as needed.
4. hftower TF4 switches in miniCTA adjusted to proper position 1445LT.
5. Web cam on array moved to full array height, central at 1700LT.
6. ACD tube installations (Golem/John on tower) completed 1220LT. Profile
   at the following heights: 1.5, 6, 9, 11, 14 and 23m. - completed 1200LT.
systems take a considerable time to calibrate and should be operational
   by tomorrow afternoon.
7. Krypton at 7.5m cleaned with significant increase in V @0955LT. Good for
   operations
8. Antonio was called about broken sprinkler near array (SE).
9. hftower usbdisk replaced. After a complex aup/adn, reboot sequence it is up
   as of 1530LT.
10.Sodar repeater worked on without success. Status: down.

*** Summary: Phase II operations underway. All measurement systems functional.
A data glitch of 1hr~10min between 0203 and 0311 this morning on east, west,
upper, lower and aster (did not affect hot-film data systems, perhaps rsync
related?). Logs confirm eth0/usb issues.

Atmospheric.chemical.event - interesting: There was a sudden
wind direction shift to 270 @0130LT then ~320 during the outage. The wind shift
was accompanied by a reduction in winds to near zero and < 1.0 m/s winds
thereafter, an increase in stability (z/L 1- >3), no obvious change in RH,
large deviations (3-7 mmol/m3) of CO2 and (1-3 g/m3) h2o, a change in sign
to negative vapor flux. This event may be a combination of marine layer-air
mass change and canopy interaction. co2, h2o variations went away at 0700LT.
Analysis is confounded by data outage.

*** Summary

Will push to complete array fixes today and get far with tower. ACD (Andreas,
Andrew and Tiffany) arrived at ~ 1330LT today with trailer in place at 1455LT.
Data from both tower and array should be used with caution (preferably not
used at all) today due to significant tower climbing. Jan Kleissl is setting
up his scintillometer today. The ASU Doppler Lidar is finishing up its
installation also.

A group of students from UC Berkeley led by Prof. Tina Katopodes-Chow will
visit on 18 May. Also, EOL Director on 17 May. Antonio's son's astronomy class
at an unknown date.

*** Activities for today
NOTE: Tower and array disturbed all day today. We do not recommend using
data between 9am and 7pm.

1. hfarray install completed. Order from west to east is SF4, SF5, SF2
replacing SF6), SF7, SF8. All BNCs sealed. Data system reinstalled and
functional. Data started at 1218LT. SF2 switches confirmed correct.
2. p' sensor installed on array central tower (to be completed tomorrow).
3. T/RH.9m confirmed operational.
4. T/RH.14m spare installed. Non-functional T/RH being sent back with Golem
Sunday (spare, #101 used as replacement).
5. T/RH.23m connection repaired, functional.
6. kh2o.14m - functioning late today, connections to be looked at carefully
7. hftower installed and flakey (incomplete pings 10-40% data loss). Sensors
ordered TF1 bottom (6m), TF4 (spare, 10m) and TF3 (14m). Switches not correct
for TF4. Poulos to show Golem.
8. Web cam on array to be moved up to original position (high, central tower)
9. White PVC water-filled tube on Tower removed.
10. ACD install begun
11. UPS delivered inside REAL trailer

*** Summary

Wind direction is within +-30 deg of S today. We will be fiddling however.

The team above arrived yesterday (9 May) and is preparing the system for
operations, which begin Sunday 13 May. M/G, in a stunning display of technical
savvy, found a sensitive power connection to the D-link box late on 9 May that
caused the data link to go down until fixed this morning. Local storage
appears complete. This explains 'gap' in covar plots.

We will first work on the array itself, and fix some obvious problems on both
the array and tall tower, before working on additional items (such as p', ACD
etc.). We were fortunate that the spraying planned for 2 days ago never
occurred and as such we have very safe conditions. Spraying will not occur
unless it rains and so none is expected for at least a week.

We met with the owner Bill Cilker, and Antonio, first thing this morning.
Bill returned after lunch and spent and hour speaking with Ned about the science and the equipment. Antonio's son's astronomy class will visit.
An interesting fellow who is quite happy with how we are operating.

Other visitors: None. We expect a group of students from UC Berkeley led by
Prof. Tina Katopodes-Chow next week. Also, EOL Director on 17 May. Antonio's
son's astronomy class.

*** Plans for today
NOTE: Tower disturbed 10am - 1230 do not use data
Array disturbed from 310pm - 630pm - do not use this data or use sparsely

0. Check guy tensions and adjust as appropriate
   - tall tower was tensioned - see separate entry
1. Clean the sensors on the array in the lower position
   - completed, notable jump in krypton voltage
2. Install single hot-films on array, data system and replace SF6 with SF2
   - single hot-films installed in vertical position
   - need to be taped for water protection
   - data system to be connected tomorrow
   - SF2 switches to be set tomorrow
3. Cut branches and leaves that have grown out to interfere with sonic 5b
   - first hour free of branches look good - to be monitored
4. Re-install the intake for the tower T.9m
   - T.9m now operating well
5. Evaluate the T.14m sensor that is literally hanging by a wire
   - sensor had broken wires, removed. To be fixed and replaced tomorrow
6. Evaluate T.23m and kh2o.14m
   - T.23m was back and then went away again hour of 3pm 10 May - flakey
   - kh2o.14m - wires jiggled and came back. To be looked at carefully
7. Begin work on p' position change per Oncley instructions
   - fully disconnected Oncley sensor and put USFS sensor back on (working)
   - Oncley sensor to be installed

#s 4-6 explain the pathology of three errors seen in Tom's interim status
reports.

162: whatever, Site all, Sun 15-Apr-2007 19:47:19 PDT, shift and secure
Sorry, Tom, one big message here, since its been a long day:

Started the day by initiating a backup of the entire dataset from isff1 to isff2
Took soil sample at 0900
Pulled hftower's Pocketec to begin backup
Pulled up the horizontal array between ~1040-1150 (west side first)
(bent the yoke for mounting 6b in the process)
From ~1230-1410 replaced 6b's yoke and secured the array with ratchet straps,
etc.
Went to lunch
From ~1525-1710 moved towers on central sensors up.
From ~1730-1820 put guy wire batteries back (after charging in base)
Also during this period drilled weep hole in hftower and reinstalled Pocketec
In base, continuing to backup disks
Changed to ops7.

To Do:
Fix network problem with hftower [unknown how to]
       Remove triple films
Have now taken 2 gravimetric samples, but need one or more when ground is wetter

Summary:
Rain last night and more forecast for today.
Finally -- some decent South winds. Now 25 hours in low-level/wide configuration.
p' noise does seem to be tube related. Now using garden hose and see just one
resonant frequency -- probably good enough.
They are still sprinkling the rows just to the east of our tower.

irrigation has started! (is by array eastern side now, will be in array
by tommorrow.
all battery boxes have been either covered with garbage bags, or been sealed
(hopefully well enough) with duct tape. unfortunately, no one will be here to
see if more measures are needed past monday. such is UNATTENDED ops.

Summary:
Still only 11 hours in low-level/wide configuration. Winds are forecast to turn today.
Still trying to debug the noise in p'. The noise went away when connected to a port
at 1.5m, so we have a hint as to the source.
Yesterday, they sprinkle irrigated along Pitt School Rd.
Today, they are sprinkling the rows just to the east of our tower.

"nan" (which seems to be what the software reports for 0) in the 6th

We will move to the low-level array since we have to lower the array for hot-film

113: software, Site all, Sat 07-Apr-2007 17:42:51 PDT, finally configured ops5!
I finally got around to making this configuration ops5. I've renamed the
configs simply high.xml, mid.xml, and low.xml, referring to the heights of
the horizontal array and config.xml simply points to them in turn.

I've assumed that the times that specify the ops periods are in GMT.

112: logistics, Site all, Sat 07-Apr-2007 16:54:13 PDT, spraying schedule
According to Antonio, spraying was delayed due to staff schedules and didn't
end up starting until 5AM this morning. Our towers probably were sprayed from
6-7AM. They have continued spraying today (despite marginally high winds),
but will stop for an Easter break tomorrow before finishing the field. They
probably will need to spray Monday as well.

Thus, we should be able to reenter the field tomorrow late morning via the
long way around the perimeter of the field. We won't be able to take the short
cut through the trees until at least Tuesday.

       Fix network problem with hftower

Summary:
Horizontal array at mid-level, wide. 31 hrs of good data in present configuration.
We have confirmed problems with the hotfilm data acquisition systems intermittently loosing data
and scrambling the channel order. We have a plan for a workaround, but Gordon may come up with
a real fix. The network is also down to hftower, but we are not losing data since no probes are
installed.
There were some data issues associated with adding the p' sensor (which is the first time our
new data systems are acquiring "standard" analog data), but these now appear to be resolved.

108: logistics, Site all, Sat 07-Apr-2007 11:03:10 PDT, AC power out to array?
Yesterday Antonio asked if he could turn off AC power to the towers while
he was digging to replace sprinkler lines near our buried cable. Since all
of our sensors are connected to batteries, this was fine. We don't know if
he actually disconnected, but we didn't notice any adverse affects.

107: hot films, Site all, Sat 07-Apr-2007 10:52:59 PDT, hotfilms removed
To avoid damage from the spraying last night, we removed all hotfilms yesterday
afternoon.

~1430-1500 removed triple probes from 30m tower in the order bottom to top.
~1530-1700 removed single probes from horiz. array in the order west to east.

Gordon may have been playing with the adams hftower and hfarray during this
time, so the data during these removals may not have been recorded.

We also bagged some of the stuff on the ground and turned the guywire lights on.
Don and I drove by at night and confirmed that the lights are quite visible.

We also pulled the Pocketecs out of hftower and hfarray about 1800. These have
now been copied to the trailer USB disks.

Recent work:

Replaced central hot-film probe in horizontal array
Installed Massman's p' instrument:
- Installed A/D board and cable in "upper" [still need software]
- Mounted port at 11m
- Deployed Massman transducer
- Finished building water pipe

To Do: Measure new sonic heights and azimuths
	(better done at lower height)
       Take gravimetric soil moisture samples
Remove hot films and turn on lights prior to spraying TONIGHT!
       Measure tree diameters for Pete
       Change ops to ops5

Summary: We inadvertently lost 8 hours of data (~1030-1830) from the sensors above 9m
on the 30m tower after installation of the A/D board in "upper".
Horizontal array at mid-level, wide. 12 hrs of good data in present configuration.

53: leaf area index, Site all, Sun 25-Mar-2007 11:32:50 PDT, leaf area density profiles
Took out the LAI-2000 yesterday (3/24).

Drove the Cherry Picker south-ease down the angled road from
the yard until it turns east. I went south four trees.

First measurement is contained in file #6 on the logger. I did not
have a measuring tape at this time.

I then drove the cherry picker over to the 30m tower. At the tall
tower, I took three measurement profiles. Two were one tree north
of the tower and the last was three trees south of the tower.
The measurements were taken such that the LAI-2000 probe was located
at the top of the booms that hold the TRH sensors. These profiles
are contained in files #7, #8 and #9. In taking these measurements, I
had the sensor 90deg blocked (270deg open) to block me out of the
measurement. The highest measurement was at the 9m height because
the cherry picker would only go that high.

Returned this morning (3/25) to improve on the profiles taken yesterday.
These profiles were now taken from the eastern-most and western-most
towers of the horizontal array. I used the 180deg blocker for these
measurements to block both myself and the towers from the sensor.
The highest measurement for these profiles was 11m. I then took a
measurement every meter as I descended the tower. So there are now
twelve measurements per profile (from 11 -> 0 m). The good measurements
are contained in Files #13 (east, pointed south) and #14 (west, pointed
north).

I had to stop taking measurements because the sun came out. However,
in the future, I recommend another profile be take from the 30m tower.
I also recommend staying with this structure of once per meter.

To take the measurements:

	1) power on by pressing: 'Power'
	2) start logging data by pressing: 'Log'
	3) press 'Enter' twice to take the entries as they are.
	4) start at 11 m, point and level the sensor, press and let
go of the button on the wand. you'll hear a beep that
starts the measurement, followed by a beep that the
		measurement is complete.
	5) move down 1 m. repeat.
	6) last measurement is with the sensor sitting on the ground.
	7) the logger will store the info. Will offload later.

If you change the number of levels in the profile, you need to modify
the stored program.

46: kh2o, Site all, Sat 24-Mar-2007 11:33:23 PDT, kh2o calibration files
The cal files are in
$ISFF/projects/CHATS/ISFF/cal_files and
$ISFF/cal_files/kryptonNNNN.

The ones in CHAT/ISFF/cal_files have names
corresponding to their location on the tower or array.

Those files just do an include "kryptonNNNN" on a given
date.

For example, krypton_3t.dat:
2007 Feb 10 00:00:00 include "krypton1133"

That means for cal data after Feb 10 look in krypton1133.
In krypton1133 is the complete cal history for 1133.

You can check the kryptonXXXX files in $ISFF/cal_files. They
should have Steve's latest values.

If one swapped in another kryton at 3t, say on Apr 13, you
would add another record to krypton_3t.dat, like so:

2007 Feb 10 00:00:00 include "krypton1133"
2007 Apr 13 18:40:00 include "krypton1391"

43: base, Site all, Fri 23-Mar-2007 12:51:17 PDT, media maintenance
It will take 40 days to fill up east's pocketec, which has the
biggest data files I believe (1.5 Gbyte/day). pocketecs are 60 Gbyte.

The network is running well. I think we have 100% recovery on
the base system.

So, copying pocketecs is relatively low priority. Maybe once a week on
the tower, and on config changes on the array.

I need to create the script to copy the data and clear the pocketec.

The hotfilms are another matter, since we're not sending that data
over the net. The 3D system generates 6.2 Gbytes/day if left
running continuously. So one should swap that drive every week
or so if we run it often. The 5 1D probes generate 4.8 Gbyte/day.

There should have been two spare pocketecs in the hotfilm shipment.

If you think the trailer is safe from theft, then perhaps you
could leave isff7 connected, and we can do a daily copy from
isff1 to 7.

Recent sensor work:

Yesterday we replaced two sonics that were missing data, one at 6 m on the
30 m tower and 9b on the horizontal array. The problems we were having
were discussed with Larry Jacobsen at Campbell and this was a problem that
they had not previously seen. The sonics appeared to be periodically
resetting themselves due to an inability to process 60 Hz data quicky
enough. For sonic 9b, we had to lower the array in order to change the
sonic.

Yesterday we lowered the horizontal array, now at 10 m, in about 75 minutes
and raised it again in about 45 minutes.

On Wednesday, March 21, we replaced the 6 m TRH which was reading ~0.3 degC
too low.

On Sunday, March 18, we replaced the 9.6 m TRH on the horizontal array.

To Do:

Install surface radiometers (waiting for completion of orchard leaf blowing
and mulching).
Install rain gauge.
Complete installation of tower hot films and deploy sensors.
Install sodar repeater.
Measure LAI.
Complete installation of guy wire lights.
Measure sonic heights and orientation.
