- 373: sonic, Site 30m tower, Mon 25-Jun-2007 10:09:59 MDT, Height of 14 m sonic
During teardown, on June 11, we took a measurement of top of the 14m boom.
It was actually located 14.15m (to the top of the uppermost wood block).
Yes, the 14m boom was moved. Steve and I moved it early in Phase
1 when we were installing the triple hot-films for the first time.
There were no more sliding mounts, and 14m happened to be immediately
below a point where the guy wires attached to the tower. So, the guy
wires blocked our ability to raise the boom on the rotating/lifting style
mounts. We decided at that time to shift the boom up to immediately
above the point where the guy wire attached to the tower. When we
were dismantling the tower, I had the thought that we might not have
measured the associated height change. So, before Chris removed that
boom, Steve and I brought the tape up to him for a quick measurement.
So the 14m boom was at this new height for most of the campaign.
The date that it actually changed should be in the log book, i.e. the
day that Steve and I finally got the hot-films installed.
Logbook Entry #60:
Deployed hot films late Saturday afternoon, 3/25 07:07 GMT.
- 371: whatever, Site 30m tower, Fri 22-Jun-2007 12:01:44 MDT, sensor serial numbers, 30 m tower
Here's the list of the serial numbers of the instruments as we took them
off the 30m tower.
Also, we took a measurement of top of the 14m boom. It was actually
located 14.15m (to the top of the uppermost wood block). I think we
should enter this too.
Thanks,
Ned

Removed CDC instrument from 30 m tower this morning.
- 345: infrastructure, Site 30m tower, Tue 05-Jun-2007 12:01:10 PDT, fuse blown on tower transformer
Power to the ACD trailer, WSU shack and the tower died
during the night. According to WSU's data it died
at 1:30 am local time.
The ISFF data systems and sensors continued to run - 12 V batteries kept
things going (did not check their voltage).
Power to the main switch was OK, but no voltage at the breaker
panel. Eventually found a blown fuse - one of the two fuses
on the black Dynatech (sp?) black box mounted on the inside of the
wall from the main power input. It is a 30A slow-blow.
Kurt says the black box is a surge suppressor.
Replaced the fuse and brought everything back up, with the
exception of the CPC counter, which is disconnected.
Power draw at the transformer breaker box is now:
1 leftmost ACD west + WSU small pump + WSU sys (14-17A)
2 next 30m tower (2A)
3 next: WSU big pump (7A)
4 rightmost: ACD north + lights (12-14A)
circuits 1 & 2 are on one leg, and 3 & 4 are on the other.
Measured the draw on each leg:
1+2: 16-19A
3+4: 19-21A
Things were back up at about 11:00 with a full load (without CPC).
- 344: infrastructure, Site 30m tower, Tue 05-Jun-2007 11:46:55 PDT, power to WSU SF6
WSU requirements (120V):
big pump: 7A
little pump: 3A
other: 3A
The 120V breakers, from left to right, on the white transformer
(da big one) at the tower, control these circuits:
1 leftmost ACD west (11-13A)
2 next 30m tower (2A)
3 next: for WSU
4 rightmost: ACD north + lights + CPC(12A)
We put WSU's big pump on #3 (the one labeled WSU)
and added their small pump and systems to the ACD west circuit.
It ran for several hours, then died during the night, see subsequent
entry...

leg1 = ~ 12.5@120ACD + ~2.5@120Tower = 15A
leg2 = ~ 11-14A@120ACD = 14A
leg2 will have WSU load, what ever that is. It is on
the 2nd 20A half of the breaker serving ACD's 'lights.'
Built adaptor cable for an extension cable for them.
Gordon, Tom know that their load needs to be measured
and if significant, we prefer some be put on the 'leg1'
distribution in the ACD trailer to balance the loads.
Andreas' CPC can be taken down if capacity is needed

low.xml is changed on aster but not run through new ops yet.
The ACD Apogee PAR sensors and Licor LI190 were installed
at levels: 2.5m, 5m, 8m, 11.5m (licor).
The 2.5m sensor is 'in the clear' at the bottom of the canopy,
the 5m sensor is actually inside some branches, while the
8m is at the top of the canopy and will have minimal shading.
The licor is above the canopy.
I hand leveled the sensors as best possible.
NOTE Re Calibrations:
The nominal calibration provided by Apogee was clearly not
consistent with the observed test. The pars have a potentiometer
inside the sensor which is factory adjusted to uniform setting
of 5.0umol/(s m^2) per mV.
A POST-PROJECT 'CALIBRATION' RUN SHOULD BE DONE to improve
upon and verfily what was done prior to putting them on the tower:

The Test run on 27may07 consisted of mote output from the par strings,
with the following output. Note that the naming here is equivalent to

NOTE Re Cleaning:
I did not do any special cleaning before this test.
The intention was to get it out to see 'order of magnitude'
so that we could decide whether to proceed on the tower or not
The Apogee 'quantum' manual for the LQS50-6 does not mention
what to use. They had appeared clean visually.
After the test and before putting on the tower I did clean
with distilled h2o because there was some dust on them from
overnight and 'car' traffic.

In the second worksheet of 'day1-1' is a crude 'scalar'
that can be used to semi-normalize the data to allow you
a relative micromol/(s m^2) level based upon the voltages
output and read by the pars.
Clearly there is a slight shift in the 'scalars' through
the day. The average multiplier to normalize the licor
voltage to the wand readings for the day is shown below,
plus the 'calibration' into micro-mols / (s M^2)
Simplistic GAIN
PAR.11.5m = PAR4, licor, * 263.635213 = micro-mols
PAR.8m = PAR3 / 40.9949 * 263.635213 = micro-mols (* 6.430927)
PAR.5m = PAR2 / 26.4434 * 263.635213 = micro-mols (* 9.969793)
PAR.2.5m = PAR1 / 43.8834 * 263.635213 = micro-mols (* 6.007630)
From the 'Night' file a nominal dc-voltage-offset is shown below.
Simple OFFSET
PAR.11.5m = PAR4 = .000317 (adc0-1)
PAR.8m = PAR3 = .000947 (adc0-2)
PAR.5m = PAR2 = .0009 (adc0-3)

Electronics box S/N 1392 put in for krypton at 14m on tower. S/N 1393 taken out.
We believe this will steady the performance of k.14m (which has been flakey
at regular intervals).
Tower climb began 1118LT and end 1152LT.
The krypton was plugged at 1140LT.
Krypton went bad at ~1302LT, indicating that the electronics box was probably
not the problem.
We decided to then change out the serializer in the CSAT box (rather than
changing out the entire sonic and CSAT box) as a further test. If that does not
work then we'll have reasonably strong evidence that it is the krypton-CSAT box
cable or the wiring to or from the serializer along the data path.
The system was down from 1543LT until 1604LT with tower climbing beginning at
1535LT. Off tower at 1615LT.

6m TRH swapped out, back in, filter installed:
Originally at 7.5m until last night, trh had been showing
a broad-band frequency response that at first was thought
to be a feature in the canopy/atmosphere interaction.
That sensor was swapped with 6m last night, but Greg and Ned
observed that it retained the 'feature' so it was removed today.
However, the 'new' unit wasn't working, so we put the original
unit back up.......meanwhile.....Geez Louise....
....noticed gortex filter missing on culprit trh!
Don't know how long that was the situation, but now it has a
filter from the 'spare.'
We'll keep an eye on this to determine whether the missing filter
was the only problem, or if it has been effected by operating without
a filter.

- 280: trh, Site 30m tower, Tue 22-May-2007 14:39:48 PDT, T/RH exchange 6 with 7.5m due to oscillation
Per ongoing T/RH investigation and Tom's email we feel that there may be a
non-physical low frequency undulation in T.7.5m including a time lag. We were
unable to detect this behavior in RH.7.5m.
Today at 1455LT we exchanged the 6m and 7.5m TRHs to see if the feature
currently at 7.5m changes position.
Start of tower 1455LT
End of tower 1515LT
Result: The feature moves. Not notable in RH measurement. Notable in T however.

- 276: rad_soil, Site 30m tower, Mon 21-May-2007 16:02:13 PDT, Rlw.16m problem - seems to be in the web plots only
More analysis of the Rlw plots shows that for a number of weeks at least that
the Rlw web plots differ from the S-plots on Aster. The S plots are much
smoother and physically realistic and so believe the web plots are accessing
something incorrectly to create a jittery plot. Will look at from hotel where
internet is more amenable.
Summary: Not likely to be a problem with the sensor.
Solution: Tom fixed this problem by adjusting rad.q. It turns out that the
K&Z at .16m was using Eppley equations resulting in the funky behavior.

21may07 12:00-12:50
14m kh2o had been a problem, and it went bad again late yesterday.
We decided to replace just the head:
out 1393
in 1397
since according to Campbell this can apparently be done without
effecting the data. It is breezy today and we decided to not
mess with the electronics box itself.
Still a chance that this won't fix the intermittent problem...
Data looks very good as of 16:00LT.
- 273: trh, Site 30m tower, Mon 21-May-2007 13:01:08 PDT, 1.5m TRH swapped
21may07 11:45-11:50
TRH swapped out with the newly calibrated / delivered unit from Boulder.
The one removed had been the culprit at 3m with the high-freq. noise.
S-plus shows that the 3m noise remains in place. Thus we conclude that this is
one of the sensors (50Ys) that Steve S. suggests have this behavior and that we
put another one in.
However, the RH and MR values (profiles)
are much more physically realistic and now, consistent with two separate
h2o profiles from ACD (1.5 and 4.5 m) with height. The 'notch' from yesterday
is gone and the 'bulge' from previous days is gone and replaced with a smoothly
varying h2o profile!
Basically, the 3m RH seems to have been high by ~2% until this time.

- 270: trh, Site 30m tower, Sun 20-May-2007 15:57:10 PDT, Exchange of 1.5m and 3.0m T/RH completed
Between 1540 and 1610 the 1.5m and 3.0m TRHs were exchanged. The purpose of
the exchange is to discern whether the mixing ratio maximum showing at RH.3m
(relative to 1.5m in particular, where soil moisture was expected to contribute
moisture more effectively) is real or sensor-related. We expect a 'notch' to
to develop in the profile if the original 3m sensor was reading high or if the
1.5 m sensor was reading low (in creating the current condition).
Result: The notch was created. The exchanged sensors read within 2% RH however,
which is the accuracy of the sensor and so little can be done (unless the
calibrations are unified to eliminate the bias).

- 267: trh, Site 30m tower, Sat 19-May-2007 14:07:22 PDT, mixing ratio profile, that was in question, less so due to ACD h2o profile confirmation
Ned checked with the ACD team regarding their h2o profiles to see if the low
elevation peak at 3 & 4.5m in mixing ratio was real. It was confirmed in their
profiles. This appears to indicate a convergence of water below canopy and
above ground. Very interesting ... is this counter-gradient transport? Given the
reverse shear going up to the canopy, I don't think so, it is just that the
shear is reversed from our expectation.

Scintillometer adjustment / data bad
------------------------------------
Anurban and Dawit downloaded the data with Erik, the student from Davis
who is supposed to periodically grab the readings.
However, the data was bad.
At Dawit's suggestion the dip switch settings were adjusted to increase
sensativity. When we tried covering the optics to sample the background
readings, they were too high indicating excessive gain. Meanwhile,
they had tried all the standard settings but got either insufficient signal,
or too high sensativity..
Jan is emailing Scintec about the situation.
Likely problem is that the receiver tower on the other side of the
orchard is too low and the signal is being obstructed by trees.
There could be a polarity issue, but it is unknown if that is even
possible. The apeture is apparently 10-degrees, so wobble in the boom
could be a factor ultimately.
The students went home today, and Jan is considering his options.

as the freewaves are concerned are working. Did not check
the sodar's pc. When checking at the base later on, did not
see the ppp link running, nor anything in the system log,
but Gordon said to expect it'll only be up ~20min every 1-2 hours,
and it is initiated from the sodar side.
Scintillometer aligned.
I worked on it for awhile and then David took over (student in
charge of the instrument) and he, other student, Jan eventually
realigned it. Uncertain but it may not have good signal because
the target is 'in the trees' despite being on their crankup tower.
Didn't ask them, just basing this on partially overheard conversation.

- 239: trh, Site 30m tower, Tue 15-May-2007 17:38:45 PDT, T.3m - 0.05-0.15 noise in 1 second data - since at least April
In the course of an investigation of the low mixing ratio at 1.5m on the tower
(compared to the 3 and 4.5m levels) we looked at T at those 3 levels.
High-rate plots (1Hz) showed highly noticeable noise about the T.3m signal
(not in the RH.3m signal). We tried one idea related to Xbee radio
interference to no avail.
Given the earlier fan problem in TRH.3m we are changing the fan. This resulted
in an outage from 1740-1810LT and had no effect.
A search back to 15 April confirmed that this noise has been present since at
least then (data storage here is limited to 15 Apr - the rest is at home).
From the above we conclude that the sensor itself is unstable and should
be replaced. Check with Tom.

Cycled power on ttyS7 and it came back up looking ok.
This will not fix the problem (no-doubt), but probably

Most likely next step either swap kh2o, or the serializer,
one or the other is the culprit (or a cable inside the csat
box).

hard-booted with a new Pocketec in place of the one that had not been working
(we are suspicious that it was the soaking it endured during the break). It
was placed in the USB2 plug. Chris earlier had noted some condensation in the
data system box (from the Pocketec cloth cover that had absorbed much water)
so we air dried it for a bit.
TF4 - the spare 3-d hotfilm, now installed at 10 m in place of TF2, had its
switches adjusted to the proper configuration.
hftower functional as of 1530LT with 130Meg files per half hour being
written to the Pocketec.
ssh to root@hftower is slow (be patient).
- 191: whatever, Site 30m tower, Sat 12-May-2007 08:30:25 PDT, ACD tubes 12 May
ACD tube installations (Golem/John on tower) completed 1220LT. Profile
at the following heights: 1.5, 6, 9, 11, 14 and 23m. - completed 1200LT.
Tubes are ~ 0.7 meters out on boom with a small webbed intake of ~ 5cm
diameter. Some additional tubes are at these heights but at the tower rather
than on the booms.
Tubes were pulled from 1100-1220LT.
- 185: trh, Site 30m tower, Wed 09-May-2007 09:17:02 MDT, TRH woes
Problems have recently cropped up with the 9, 14, and 23 m TRH's.
9 m TRH is too high during the day, suggesting a fan failure.
14 m TRH has bad data (T=-40, RH=-1.6). It appears as though there is a bad
connection between the sensor and the A/D.
23 m TRH is not communicating with the data system. Perhaps a power recycle
will get it going properly.
- 183: rad_soil, Site 30m tower, Mon 07-May-2007 14:43:52 MDT, rad stand battery fix
the rad stand was fixed by Hanza on friday Apr 27th by running wire from the
large battery, directly to the datalogger.
data started flowing.
- 178: pressure, Site 30m tower, Wed 25-Apr-2007 13:29:58 MDT, resonance
I determine from the spectrum that we now have resonance at 3.3Hz. At a nominal
speed of sound of 330 m/s, and assuming that our tubing is one-open-end
resonator at 1/4 wavelength, the length of tubing would be 100m/4=25m. Our
garden hose 15m, so there is a bit of a mismatch, but perhaps this is
close enough to be the explanation for the "bump"?
- 177: pressure, Site 30m tower, Wed 25-Apr-2007 11:52:46 MDT, p' port location
Using photogrammetry, I've estimated that the center of the quad-disk-probe
is 37.4cm from the intersection of the CSAT acoustic paths, at an angle of
133 degrees from the longitudinal axis of the sonic. If the sonic was
pointing due west, this would make the bearing of the port 137 degrees true
from the sonic array. Winds from an angle of 149 degrees true would graze the
edge of the probe's outer disks. Thus, 11m sonic data from directions from
about 125--150 degrees are now compromised by the presence of this port.
- 174: kh2o, Site 30m tower, Wed 25-Apr-2007 09:29:15 MDT, 14 m kh2o recovered April 23
The 14 m kh2o appears to have recovered ~1515 PDT, April 23.
- 173: adams, Site 30m tower, Tue 24-Apr-2007 14:46:54 MDT, hfarray dead (and resurrected!)
Before SteveO left he plugged in the emptied pocketec to hfarray,
but wasn't able to mount it.
I logged into hfarray from Boulder today but still wasn't
able to mount the pocketec. I think the error was:
"/dev/sda1 is not a valid block device"
As a hack I rebooted hfarray, and now it won't ping.
(hfarray is the system with the 10% ping error problem).
After an hour or so the system came back. It must
have been checking the disk. I logged into it,
verified that the pocketec data has been saved to
the /media/isff backups, and cleared the pocketec.
- 161: hot films, Site 30m tower, Sat 14-Apr-2007 17:02:01 PDT, shut down hftower data
To avoid filling up the Pocketec with useless files, I stopped data collection
with adn.
- 159: pressure, Site 30m tower, Sat 14-Apr-2007 15:34:42 PDT, flat washer inserted
Finally inserted a flat washer at the port/hose connection, so it shouldn't
leak. This done 1508. The fitting had "bottomed out", so prior data are
somewhat suspect.
- 158: hot films, Site 30m tower, Sat 14-Apr-2007 15:32:26 PDT, triple probes removed
From about 1430-1500 removed the triple probes in order: 6m (1), 10m (2), and
14m (3). Both 6m and 10m were sliders, so sonic data probably are okay.
14m was a tilt-up, that was up from ~1453-1457.
- 155: pressure, Site 30m tower, Fri 13-Apr-2007 18:38:09 PDT, tubing shortened
I removed about 4m of dekoran tubing from the base of the mast, which might
help lower our bump a bit more...
This done about 1830.
- 153: pressure, Site 30m tower, Fri 13-Apr-2007 14:49:46 PDT, moved port to other side of boom
I remounted the quad-disk-probe on to the south side of the sonic boom, as per
Bill and Jim. Winds from SE will now put the sonic in the wake of the port.
I also intended to make the hose fitting more secure, but now realize that I
should have a washer inside the fitting (which I didn't have). Another trip
may be called for.
- 152: rad_soil, Site 30m tower, Fri 13-Apr-2007 14:45:37 PDT, 16m rads cleaned
I cleaned the 16m radiometers from 1413-1417. Sky was clear, so it should be
possible to see the effect. There was a bit of obvious dust on the up-lookers.
As far as I know, this is the first time cleaning these sensors.
The boom was seated on only one side of the clamp, which made me nervous. It
was redeployed using both sides.
- 151: sonic, Site 30m tower, Fri 13-Apr-2007 13:05:45 PDT, vertical array azimuth attempt
I attempted to shoot the azmuths of of the sonics on the 30 M tower using the
datascope plus or minus .5 deg accy (shooting into the boom)
I didn't get too far due to a lot of leaves obscuring the view.
1.5 meter 94.8
3.0 meter 96.2
4.5 meter 95.6
6.0 meter 94.8 (this one mostly a guess due to limited clear view)
7.5 meter 90.1 (this reading not very believeable because only clear view
was from a very steep angle)
9.0 meter 94.8
all sonics higher than 9 meters were blocked by foliage, or angle of view was
too steep
I also attempted to shoot the hot film azmuths, but I couldn't get a clear view
of them either.
- 148: pressure, Site 30m tower, Fri 13-Apr-2007 11:00:03 PDT, garden hose installed
Since last nights' data looked good from a lower port, we decided to try a
larger pipe. I installed a garden hose from about 0900-1010 today, plumbed
to the port back at 11m (and set it upright again).
- 147: pressure, Site 30m tower, Thu 12-Apr-2007 16:52:04 PDT, p' data rates lowered
Now that the tubing noise is reduced, I see the Paroscientific instrument noise
levels. Thus, I've nudged the data rate down again:
1m Paro: PI=134, PR=48 => 3.85sps (~8ub resolution)
11m ncar: PI=67, PR=24 => 14.6sps (and PS still 128) (~1.6ub resolution)
This done about 16:52
- 146: pressure, Site 30m tower, Thu 12-Apr-2007 16:03:25 PDT, Spare quad-disk-port installed at 1m
For more pressure diagnosing, I have lashed Bill's spare port on the PAM
port boom and connected both his and my transducers to it. This eliminates the
water pipe and provides a nearly side-by-side comparison to the reference
Paroscientific on the PAM port. This was done about 15:00.
We'll run a while like this.
- 145: trh, Site 30m tower, Thu 12-Apr-2007 15:56:57 PDT, 6m TRH replaced
Since this T has been 0.1 deg low, it was replaced by the sensor just shipped
back from Boulder.
0101 removed 15:16
0502 installed 15:34 (but wait until 15:40 for fan to cool it down)
It took a while because the replacement fan was plugged into the wrong side
of the connector, which obviously had to be fixed.
- 141: pressure, Site 30m tower, Wed 11-Apr-2007 16:32:07 PDT, more p rate changes
To figure out the bump, I've been playing with paro sampling rates.
At about 15:44, I set:
P.1m: PI=34, PR=12 => 12.1 sps
p.ncar: PI=17, PR=6 => 41.7 sps
These settings had too much noise.
Just now (16:32), I set:
P.1m: PI=67, PR=24 => 7.2 sps
p.ncar: PI=34, PR=12 => 28.2 sps
Recall that p.ncar also has PS=128, running P7 command.
- 140: pressure, Site 30m tower, Wed 11-Apr-2007 12:55:21 PDT, p' removal instructions
Since I won't be here for tear-down, I thought I'd make a few notes about
removing the pressure stuff.
- To remove the port, I would:
- lean out with a 5/8(?) wrench and disconnect the copper tubing
- lean out with a ratcheting 7/16 and loosen the bolt on the top
of the sonic boom about 1/2 a turn
- swing the port towards the tower
- lean out with 2 hands and loosen the Allen setscrews nearest the
port while holding onto the port
- put the port carefully in a backpack and lower it down
- put a hauling line on the rest of the metal mount and fully remove
the 7/16 top bolt
- The ports (one more is on the shelf by the Motosat) were shipped in
a separate cardboard in bubble wrap and peanuts, inside a baggie to
keep peanuts from jamming between plates.
- To remove the water pipe:
- disconnect the black Dekoran tubing at the bottom of the tube.
- remove the adams (to avoid water damage)
- remove the water -- I'd try making a small cut near the base of
the tube with a hacksaw; you could also try loosening the bulkhead
fitting on the bottom end cap
- continue cutting off the end cap through the inner copper tube
[SAVE this cap -- I want to keep the bulkhead fitting]
- pull up the copper tubing from the top; coil up and save
- undo the cable ties; drop the PVC tubing; cut up with hacksaw and
discard (maybe Antonio wants some?)
- Disassemble the transducers:
- Disconnect tubing on T at base of tarp
- Bill's grey box came out more-or-less loose in a big cardboard box,
along with his tarp, bungies, and tubing. The foam can be excessed.
- The Pelican case foundation is ours for shipping TRHs
- Disinter my Aluminum tube
- **** IMPORTANT ****
My sensor will be destroyed if it is shipped to Boulder with the
pressure in the reference volume set to Dixon pressure.
I need the following steps to be done, even though they are obnoxious.
(may be easier to do in base trailer) I'm sorry....
- disconnect tubing at end cap
- remove 8 screws (and black tape) securing the connector
end cap
- tip up closed end of tube a bit while pulling on the
connector end cap and pull out the transducer (about 8").
- disconnect clear tubing on end of blue transducer on side
opposite end cap (-). Be somewhat careful. There is squishy
grey foam around this fitting that needs to be pushed into
transducer to get a wrench on the fitting. There might be
a slight release of air/nitrogen.
- remove 2 Phillips screws holding transducer to cap
- disconnect clear tubing from inside of bulkhead
fitting on end cap
- reconnect Phillips screws, with end of tubing
loose inside milled indentation for bulkhead fitting
- reconnect 8 screws
- My sensor came wrapped in ping bubble wrap, laid near one side of
the grey shipping case, and wedged with 2x6 chunks. The rest of the
case was filled with the box of fittings and tubing.
- 139: pressure, Site 30m tower, Wed 11-Apr-2007 12:38:32 PDT, p port now upside down
As part of the ongoing determination of why the p' sensors show noise at ~4 Hz,
I have just changed the port to be upside down (and thus now lower). This
done ~12:00-12:17. After this was done, I deliberately checked for mechanical
vibrations. The biggest appears to be the entire boom vibrating in both
pitch and azimuth. I induced a pitch oscillation of the port with a vertical
displacement of about +/-1 cm at ~12:16. The frequency would have been a few
Hz. No vibration at this frequency is obvious in the data.
(An oscillation is obvious, but is much slower -- perhaps due to my body motion
on the tower?)
- 138: pressure, Site 30m tower, Wed 11-Apr-2007 10:33:57 PDT, p.1m now 4sps
I just set PR=48 (and hopefully PI=134) on the Paro. This should decrease the
resolution somewhat (5ppm, rather than 0.5ppm), but increase the sampling rate
to 4sps.
- 136: sonic, Site 30m tower, Tue 10-Apr-2007 23:30:27 PDT, needed to restart 4.5m sonic
data_stats showed that the 4.5m sonic wasn't reporting. I got it going
by typing &d's at it using rserial.
We had this behaviour during TREX with 2 sonics -- we should check the serial
numbers.
P.S. This is SN 1120. The TREX sonic that was logged as misbehaving was 1123.
Did we have this problem in CuPIDO as well?
- 132: kh2o, Site 30m tower, Tue 10-Apr-2007 15:38:58 PDT, krypton at 14m strange
As I mentioned in status, the 14m krypton is strange. Keith just reseated
the connectors, so we'll see if there is any change. (Though a look with
prep() at the signal doesn't show any change.) It is an intermittent
problem.
- 131: kh2o, Site 30m tower, Tue 10-Apr-2007 15:37:23 PDT, krypton 7.5 cleaned
Since I saw little change when Keith cleaned the krypton at 7.5m, I asked him
to do it again today (~1515). I still see no change, so I guess it was
clean after all! (But it is now the lowest voltage.)
- 129: pressure, Site 30m tower, Tue 10-Apr-2007 13:11:04 PDT, p.ncar installed
At long last, I've installed my p' sensor in the final configuration. Note
that from ~12:30-1:00 p.usfs is also bad since I had to break into the pressure
line to install p.ncar. p.ncar is buried under p.usfs -- I hope it survives
the rain forecast for tomorrow!
Note that it will take quite a while for the temperature of my reference volume
to equilibrate to its current position in the soil. (The volume has been in
our air-conditioned trailer.)
The transducer reading is -6mb, so apparently my reference volume is at a
reasonable pressure!

Please enter this record of the laboratory recalibration of S/N 502 in
the CHATS logbook:
S/N 502 was originally at the 6 m level on the vertical tower and was
replaced with S/N 206 on March 21 (entry 31). Ned and I had detected
the -0.3 deg C error in the profile plots. We will send it out to
replace the TRH currently at 6 m (S/N 101) which we removed from the
horizontal array (entry 93) because it appears to be in error by -0.1
deg C. Send S/N 101 back for laboratory recalibration.

Here is the result of the temperature check on TRH502. It had a mean
error of -.3133 C (sensor - ref). If we want we could use this as a
correction to the data when this sensor was deployed. New coefficients
will be computed.

- 125: rad_soil, Site 30m tower, Mon 09-Apr-2007 08:22:43 PDT, soil samples
I've set up the corer to take 0-3 and 3-6cm cores. I'm processing the entire
3cm-thick core as one "aloquot". I've been turning the oven off between
samples.
4/9:
This should be considered close to the driest case. The soil crumbled out of
the corer on my first try. I undercut the corer with the trowel and tilted
it out of the hole to recover the final core. Nevertheless, the clay-like
clumps do have some internal adhesion.
I got "bad TDR level" on the TRIME when using the normal probe at 1 location.
I then tried the removable probe and got a reading of 17.4-18.0%.
I then moved the removable to another site and got the 23.4% noted below.
Thus, I'm worried about the soil salinity -- we'll have to watch it.
NOTE!!! I left the removable probes in the 23.4 location. Future readings
should use these. They are about 2m to the South and slightly West of the
fixed soil probe stake (with the orange flagging).
4/12:
Slightly moister upper layer after 1mm of rain. Still a lot of variability
in TRIME readings, even using prongs that have had a lot of time to settle.
Actual readings were: 24.1, 25.0, 26.1, 24.7.
Some of the core dirt pushed out of 0-3 and also there was some spillage.
Thus 0-3 probably is 0-3.6, 3-6 is 3.6-6.6cm. I wouldn't use this 0-3 for
density.
4/15:
Morning after irrigation AND rain, so probably the wettest it is going to get!
0-3 was not quite deep enough, so don't know about bulk density.
TRIME was reasonably consistent: 34.4, 34.6, 34.7.

- 124: communications, Site 30m tower, Sun 08-Apr-2007 18:47:12 PDT, power cycled hub in lower
We lost communications to the 30m tower this afternoon. After trying lots of
things (and it not being quite as high a priority as all the other stuff that
Keith just discussed), I just cycled power on the hub, which appears to have
gotten things working. Unfortunately, we still have the 16% packet dropouts
which is causing Gordon to be unable to update the hotfilm acquisition code.
Thus, the triple-film probes probably still have the channel shift problem
but the singles on hfarray should now be running his new code.
- 119: rad_soil, Site 30m tower, Sun 08-Apr-2007 18:24:07 PDT, Radiometer Cleaned
The radiometers just west of the 30 meter tower where cleaned today after the Saturday morning tree spraying.
- 118: pressure, Site 30m tower, Sun 08-Apr-2007 18:22:16 PDT, 11m pressure sensor tube on 30m Tower Filled
The 11 meter pressure sensor tube on the 30 meter tower was filled with water. No leaks where detected.
Also added one more cable tie to the copper tubing at the top to lessen
vibration of the tube.
Also Tee-d off Steve's Paro with Bill's xducer and connected the Paro to
lower's ttyS9, but still not getting data.
- 117: data system, Site 30m tower, Sun 08-Apr-2007 18:17:41 PDT, Power Board on Viper Data System Replaced
While examining the inside of the Viper Data System on the 30 meter tower, I noticed that the connector on the power board of the PC104 stack had a broken solder connection. The power board from the spare PC104 stack was used to replace it.
- 116: kh2o, Site 30m tower, Sun 08-Apr-2007 18:16:16 PDT, KH2O Sensors on the 30m Tower Cleaned
All KH2O sensors where cleaned on the 30 meter tower after the Saturday morning spraying of the trees. Distilled water and QTips where used to clean them.
- 115: hot films, Site 30m tower, Sun 08-Apr-2007 18:12:49 PDT, Reinstalled Triple Hot Film Elements
After the tree spraying Saturday morning, the triple wire Hot Films where reinstalled on the 30 meter tower starting the lowest and working upward.
P.S.
I this was the time when we installed the new data acquistion code via
the spare Pocketec to avoid the channel slip problem.
- 111: pressure, Site 30m tower, Sat 07-Apr-2007 16:51:28 PDT, config mods for upper
In an attempt to determine why the p' signal has a peak at 4Hz, we ran upper
with a base sampling rate of 400 (rather than 200) sps during the period
~15:58-16:45. Everything should be back to normal now, but upper has been
restarted several times.
- 109: communications, Site 30m tower, Sat 07-Apr-2007 11:19:40 PDT, hftower network problem
Yesterday afternoon we started having network problems with hftower and it is
now mostly down. I reseated many of the cables at about 1730 yesterday but
found no obvious problems. Next steps would be swapping cables between
hftower and upper and checking the cable itself going up the tower from
lower [with the hub] and hftower. These will have to wait until tomorrow
when we can reenter the field. Since hotfilms are all down, we aren't losing
data in the meantime.
- 106: pressure, Site 30m tower, Sat 07-Apr-2007 09:48:18 PDT, p' tests
Gordon got the A/D code running early yesterday afternoon. The main fix was
to change the Diamond A/D card to interrupt #7.
By that time, we
also had added a fuse to get Bill's transducer going. Bill and I checked
whether his transducer gain was 25 mV/ub (as per the factory/Bedard spec) or
18.6 mV/ub (as per my test in the wind tunnel last month). We lifted the
box several times by 1.5m, between ~15:05-15:18. I'll be looking at the
data soon, but our impression using the DVM was that 18.6 probably was correct.
dp = rho g H; rho~1.23, g~9.81, H~1.5 => 18Pa = 1.8ub => 45mV@25 mV/ub or
33mV@18.6 mV/ub. Our impression was that we were seeing closer to 33mV steps.
[Also, I need to calculate rho for the exact conditions at this time.]
- 104: pressure, Site 30m tower, Fri 06-Apr-2007 08:45:44 PDT, p' port connected
I just connected the quad-disk probe to the "water pipe". This completes the
installation of the p' sensor (using Bill's transducer), with the exception of
needing to fill the pipe.
Don and I go to Davis today to fill my reservoir with N2, which I need to do
before deploying my transducer.
We expect Gordon to load the software to drive the A/D board later this morning.
- 103: adams, Site 30m tower, Thu 05-Apr-2007 18:49:10 PDT, upper data collection restarted
Apparently, upper didn't restart correctly when I did the A/D board install
this morning. All the Emerald channels (everything above 9m) were not being
recorded. I restarted with an "adn" and "aup" and everything now appears
normal. This may have been due to the GPS hanging when I powered up the
system (which was due to the lid of the box covering the GPS receiver when
it was open!). I finally fixed the lid problem, but apparently the system
wasn't happy.
I'm sorry!!
- 101: whatever, Site 30m tower, Thu 05-Apr-2007 17:00:55 PDT, tower climbing
To begin the p' sensor install, I climbed at various times between 1445-1645.
The 11m sonic was tilted up from ~1445-1530.
- 90: rad_soil, Site 30m tower, Mon 02-Apr-2007 16:20:31 PDT, radiometers 'dusted' by mowing
The radiometers have been subjected to dust clouds due to mulching and mowing
since about 15:00. Don and Keith cleaned radiometers and 1.5 m kh2o.
- 74: whatever, Site 30m tower, Fri 30-Mar-2007 15:14:57 PDT, Heights of scintillometer and particle counter
Jan Kleissl plans to install his scintillometer on the 30 m tower. We
are measuring 4-component radiation at a height of 16 m, so we would
like to minimize the influence of the scintillometer as much as
possible. The influence of scintillometer on the radiation measurements
will decrease with the cosine of the angle from the zenith at which
the instrument is seen by the radiometers and with the square of the distance
between the scintillometer and the radiometers.
Let z be the height difference between the radiometers and the
scintillometer and x be the horizontal spacing between them, roughly the
length of the radiometer boom. Then the cosine of the viewing angle is
z/sqrt(x^2 + z^2) and the distance between them is sqrt(x^2 + z^2).
The relative influence at different mounting heights is then
z/(x^2+z^2)^1.5
The radiometer boom is roughly 1 m long.
The maximum influence occurs at z = x/sqrt(2) = 0.7x, where the relative
influence is equal to 1/(sqrt(2)*1.5^1.5) = 0.385
The influence is 10% of its peak value at z = 5 m or a height of 21 m.
There are sonics at heights of 18 m and 23 m, so halfway between them
would be 20.5 m, where the influence is 12% of its peak value.
Andreas Held is installing his particle counter at the 14 m sonic.
According to Andrew, he can place it a "meter or so" above or below
the sonic, so we should put it as far below as Andreas thinks feasible.
Mounting his instrument at the height of the boom would have an
influence of 46% of its peak value. 1 m lower at 13 m would place it
3 m below the radiometers and reduce the influence to 25% of its peak value;
2 m lower at 12 m would reduce the influence to 15% of its peak value.

- 36: sonic, Site 30m tower, Thu 22-Mar-2007 16:58:09 PDT, 6 m sonic replacement
This morning, we replaced sonic 0740 at 6 m on vertical tower with sonic 0119.
Moved sonic 0740 to TRH boom at 1.70 m + 32 cm. Thus sonic is at a
height of 1.70 m + 32 cm + 5 cm = 2.07 m.
Plugged sonic 0740 into 1.5 m serial port, lower ttyS1.
17:55: plugged 1.5 m sonic, S/N 0673, back into lower ttyS1.

- 35: sonic, Site 30m tower, Wed 21-Mar-2007 18:04:38 PDT, Changed 6 m sonic "dc" parameter to 0
I talked with Larry Jacobsen at CSI about sonic sampling problem. It appears
that the sonic just can't keep up with 60 Hz. It does not miss samples at
30 Hz and Larry speculates that we might fix this by narrowing the time window
whithin which the sonic looks for the received signal (my interpretation of
what he told me). The way to narrow the window is to decrease the DC
parameter to 0, which is by default 1 for 60 Hz, using the terminal command
'dc -' (dc + increments DC). Note that the default DC parameter is larger for
slower sampling rates.
So far I have been unsuccessful reducing the DC parameter for sonic 9b while
it is misbehaving. I could presumably do it for sonic 6m because it was
behaving at the time.
In the process, I did not get the sonic going again until 18:12.

The original 6 m shield had a loose inner tube, so moved the 1.5 m shield to
6 m. The 1.5 m trh has no shield at this time.
3/22: The temperature profiles look much better now.
At some point today Steve fixed the shield and installed it at 1.5 m.

- 28: rad_soil, Site 30m tower, Tue 20-Mar-2007 08:55:38 PDT, radiometer footprint
I have calculated the footprint for a downward looking radiometer:
The footprint is h^2/(r^2 + h^2)^2 where h is the height of the radiometer
and r is radial distance on the surface from a point immediately below
the radiometer. Thus the footprint has a maximum directly below the
radiometer equal to 1/h^2, drops to 0.5/h^2 at r/h ~ 0.6, 0.25 at
r = 1, and 0.01 at r=3.
The cumulative footprint is r^2/(r^2 + h^2). The cumulative footprint
equals 0.5 at r/h = 1, 0.9 at r/h = 3, and 0.99 at r/h = 10.

- 4: rad_soil, Site 30m tower, Wed 14-Mar-2007 10:35:05 PDT, Soil sensor location, s/numbers
I installed the soil sensors at a depth of 5 cm, south of the sawhorse and at
the boundary between bare ground and clover. See previous logbook entry for
discussion of surface types. They are close to being directly west of a tree.
I installed the soil heat flux plate at 5 cm with the dot on top. I installed
the ECH2O and TPO1 sensors with a vertical orientation to avoid blocking
vertical water migration. I installed the soil temperature probe at a
45 degree angle starting near the surface.
The serial numbers are:
HFT 14983123 38.2 W/m^2 per V
Qsoil No serial number
TPO1 200239 175.8 uV/degK
Soil T STP 94017
- 3: rad_soil, Site 30m tower, Wed 14-Mar-2007 10:27:50 PDT, Installed sawhorse
The radiation sawhorse has been installed at the 30 m tower. It is
located one tree row north and 3 rows west of the tower.
There are two distinct types of surfaces. The surface between the trees in
a N/S row is bare ground. The surface between the N/S tree rows has a
ground cover of clover. I oriented the sawhorse in a N/S direction and
aligned the horizontal beam along a border between clover and bare ground
in order to sample equally both types of surface.
The height of the middle of the horizontal sawhorse beam is 2 m +/- a few
centimeters. It is 120 cm west of the tree line and centered N/S between
two trees.
