Table of partial beam blockage for S-PolKa S-band in DYNAMO.
Original RATE data were filtered on RATE_KDP exists, and integrated
over the 29 days/24-hour periods that had significant surrounding
precip. Blockage was first calculated by determining relative precip
amount ratios for each RATE and elevation, referenced to the RATE_KDP
at 2.5 degrees (an un-blocked RATE and elevation). Ratios were then
normalized using the apparent ratio over the ocean, where no blockage
should exist (no blockage was assumed between azimuths 1 to 80
degrees, and 105 to 130 degrees). The ratios that were produced were
then subtracted from unity, to produce a blockage fraction. Note that
the normalization process introduced some noise in the estimate, and
produced some small negative numbers; these should be ignored, or
considered as zero.
Data presented in this table are normalized blockage fractions. All
work was done using precip rates, and the fractional blockage varies
by the type of rate. For example, RATE_KDP is largely unblocked at
most elevations, whereas RATE_ZH is heavily blocked toward the west at
the 0.5 and 1.5 degree elevations, and partially blocked toward the
west at 2.5 degrees for some of the azimuths.
Blockage fractions should range from zero to 1.0. Given the magnitude
of the negative values, the accuracy of the estimates is assumed to be
on the order of +/- .05
