sonde humidity was higher than sfc humidity by a factor of around 20. we waited for it to stabalize but it did not and we decided to proceed with the launch. on the launch screen, raw met data still had the sonde humidity at around 70 but 
the 10-sec data has it showing up at around 50 before we launched.

The roving team (Lou and June) visited Kino site on Aug. 10 and Aug. 11. Here is a summary for our visit:

(1) Profiler data backup: We stopped the profiler at 20:05-20:55 UTC on Aug. 10 to back up the profiler data. The data were backed up to two CDs (NAME_KIN04 and NAME_KIN05). We left one copy in the trailer and brought one copy with us. After backup, the disk was ~20% full.

(2) Data backup on DM computer: We backed up raw and NIMA data on DM computer on two DVDs (one for raw and one for NIMA), left one copy in the trailer and brought one copy with us.

Short power outage this morning at 12z launch from storm. We had to restart the sounding system and bypass the clary as it started beeping at the very start of launch before we let the balloon go. We aborted the sonding, restarted the system without the clary and everything seems fine.

First sonde we launched was bad, #408401511, no wind data up to termination pressure of 617 mb except for between 1009.6mb to 937.1 mb. The signal was good and the satellites were between 5-8 the whole flight. Launched another sonde, it also had missing wind data at the lower levels but improves with height. -Heather

Some good some bad:

 - Brad reported that the Motosat was set to "Do Not Disturb" which is why we
   could not call in from the other sites.
 - Brad also found the Fluke digital multimeter which the roving crew was
   falsely accused of removing.

 - Two 408 sondes launched at 04 and 08 Z on July 29 didn't look good. There
are not data from ~700-180 mb for 08Z and from ~250-130 mb for 04 Z. But it
was not documented in the tklog file. The students need to pay attention!

 - At least some of the Los Mochis crew have been trained on entering
   coefficients by hand from the paper tape.

Today is the last day of roving duty for Steve and John. Lou and June are
here in Kino now and the plebian order of the cell phone will be bestowed
upon them in a ceremony at dinner.

IOP#4 will finish this evening.

- We did another data backup to DVD of the ISS-3 workstation.
- Showed the new roving team everything we could think of
- CLARY UPS:

Things are looking up at Los Mochis. Brad reported that the Motosat was set to

GLASS SYSTEM POWER
The GLASS system has been put back on the CLARY GT1000 ups which isw on 3 extension cords .
The operators have been told that if there are any problems to remove plug strip
and to put the strip into the protection box.This is because of high voltage. 
The fix sent to us by CLARY is for different model. The 1000's input voltage 
is not adjustable.

Winds lost at 200mB.
We did hear and interfering signal.  It appeared that the receiver jumped
to another freq. at 103.5 at the end.  Beginning freq. was 102.5.  The
direction of travel was towards the SE so it's possible that we switched
to the Hermosillo sonde.  Aspen data did look fine.

The LORETO Glass station does not use TKLOG so we are entering a short summary
from here at ISS-3/Kino.

Roving team (Steve and John) flew Hermosillo to Loreto last Friday (July 23).
The Glass site is at the Hotel Pinta which is booked for the season.
Hotel Posada de Loreto was fine. Basic, clean, 395 pesos. It is in the
center of town and a 10-minute walk from the Pinta.

A car is not needed except for transportation to/from the airport. Katie
gave us a ride, but a taxi would have worked.

Flight info:
Aeromexico has one flight/day same each day:
 HMO to LOR: Flight AM2290 departs at 4:35pm
 LOR to HMO: Flight AM2291 departs at 9:10am
 Price was about 3700 pesos round trip (depends on day of week)

LORETO ISSUES:

MOTOSAT:
 The Motosat was not working when we arrived. It had failed following a quick
manual shutdown during a strong windstorm. After many restarts by the crew over
many days it got to the configuration screen. Per conversation with Tim we used
the point4020 software on another PC (Steve's laptop on the LAN) to set the
satellite lat/lon. It has worked ok since. A continuing issue is that there are
no other PC's on that LAN which can successfully run point4020.

REGULATOR:
 The high-pressure gauge on the Loreto regulator was inoperative, and the hose
may leak. We brought the spare regulator from Puerto Penasco. The low pressure
hose was moved from the Loreto regulator. This regulator will now screwed on
the tanks without the hose. Appears to work well, and without leaking. We also
played with the balloon size. In Kino the students measured a balloon
circumference with 34 cf. The students at Loreto cut a rope to this length.
When filled with 400 lbs helium, the curcumference matched that in Kino
closely.

GLASS PC:
 The Glass PC failed after the 12Z sounding on July 25. It appeared to be
a hard drive failure. The students told us that the setup crew had much
trouble with this PC. With reckless abandon JWM opened the laptop and noted
the HDD was loose in its tray. Further there were no screws holding
the HDD in the tray and only 1 screw holding the tray to the case.
A cardboard shim was fashoned
to reduce play of the HDD in its bracket. THe HDD was reinstalled with
a satisfying connection to the motherboard. The PC has been better behaived
since. We ran scandisk which found many "errors". Some were related to old
software (versions of the GLASS software and others). After consultation with
Tim, and over two days, we removed considerable software from this PC. We then
began to defragment the disk. This process had to be interupted several times
to launch sondes. The crew will continue to defrag between launches until
it is done. Apologies to the crew in Boulder for calling an emergency and then
fixing the problem. Ned was willing to scramble an F-18 to get us a replacement
PC.

A second problem with this PC was noted: The case fan is not working.
We are now using four Glass pylons to lift the Glass pc above the desk,
providing the possibility of ventilation below. We have also bought a fan for
the room to circulate air past the PC.

Lou is bringing a replacement pc for GLASS and should install it soon. We would
have tried running GLASS on another laptop but apparently the software can
only be run under Windows-98.

SURFACE TOWER:
 The same storm that caused the Motosat to be stowed blew down the GLASS
surface met tower. The students righted the tower and replaced it in the same
position. We tied the station to two nearby trees (in addition to the stakes
already in the sand at the tower base). It turns out that this tower had not
been working since setup. There was no communication between the GLASS pc and
the campbell. JWM worked on that and eventually made contact. But the values
coming back were clearly not calibrated. Possibly we were using the wrong DLD
file? Because we were concerned with data quality/accuracy and did not think
a continuous data stream would benefit the PI we did not pursue this further.
Data quality issues:
 - the anemometer propellor broke when the station was blown over
 - the pressure sensor has no static port, so P is affected by wind around the
Campbell box.
 - the T/RH sensors are aspirated but the fan is weak.
 - numerous trees and large buildings were clearly affecting the local flows
at the tower height.
 - the anemometer orientation was off >=8 degrees and the reported direction
was even further off indicating that the potentiometer may be rotated in the
collar, or the 'BD or ZN' boom direction/zero north are incorrect.

 GLASS expects to use the surface tower for a ground point (P,T,H,WSpd,Wdir),
not for regular time series data. Since this was not available they are simply
copying the sonde values for surface data, estimating the wind speed, and
using the anemometer vane to estimate direction. (Note that we measured the
tower black box direction to be about 8 degrees clockwise of true south).

GENERAL:
 Be aware that there is NO test equipment, few tools, and no manuals at this
site.

OTHER COMMENTS:

-- We noticed that GLASS does not aspirate the rawinsonde T/RH sensor prior to
launch. The ISS group has found this to be necessary, especially if the sensor
arm is in direct sunlight.

-- The GLASS receiving antenna is poorly positioned at this site. Its view of
the sky is blocked to the west to more than 45 degrees above the horizon by
the hotel building. This is because the coax between the GLASS rack and GLASS
amplifier, and between the amplifier and the antenna are fairly short. We saw
flights where the balloon went west and we lost signal around 300 mb because
the sonde signal was blocked by the building. We've recommended the next Roving
team bring a replacement/longer cable. Lou reported that a longer coax had to
be used for the GPS ground antenna in this installation.

We (Steve and John) are back in Kino.

This morning I note a possible problem:
  There is a weak second image in the Y+ beam spectral contour plots; even
  weaker in the Y- beam. May indicate that the beam pattern is degrading
  but not enough to affect the wind measurement. We should check the
  switches carefully when back in Boulder.

Late launch due to problem with the sounding computer and receiver when we arrived this morning.

Power outages last night throughout Kino. When we got in this morning the Clary was beeping. We turned it off and then the receiver and sounding system would not turn back on. We called Lou and he advised us to remove the Clary from the system and plug the sounding system and receiver directly into the beige box with red light. Sounding system started up successfully.

All systems normal except for satellite link up- going through the cycling process right now. We had a brief, approx. one minute, power outage earlier today around 12:30pm. It was so brief that nothing lost power, but now the sat link is acting up. Turned sat system off for one minute, didn't work. Now trying for a longer period of time, probably an hour to see if that will fix the problem.This doesn't seem  to be a result of any of the DICTUS folks, just a local power outage
Called Roving Crew and informed them of outage.Powered down for an hour, restarted, it worked.

The profiler here at Kino stopped working around the time of the rawinsonde
launch at 17Z. The symptom was no Tx power. Receiver sample comb looked fine,
but also the Rx noise level may have been weak.

Powering down the RX/TX and Interface boxes and restarting the PC solved it.
Also, checked all cables and they looked fine. Not sure of the cause.

Steve and John are stopping by to drop our luggage before a flight to Loreto
this afternoon.

The profiler failed sometime around 17:30. It appeared the TX was not
transmitting. RX sample comb was ok. Solved by powering down RX/TX and
interface boxes, rebooting PC. Checked cable connections. Then it worked.
Good news since our flight leaves in a couple of hours.

All else looks great here.

Partly cludy this morning clearing to a few cirrus to the south, convective towers on the horizon to the north. A few scattered clouds overhead at time of 06Z launch.

Sonde vs surface station pressure: we've been waiting 5 to 10 minutes to see if the sonde pressure would ever stabilize to be same as the surface met station and have not found it to do so. The sounde almost always seems to be one millibar lower than the met station at the launch time regardless of the wait time.

Cambell not displaying data before launch or after. Restart of the data manager seemed to resolve this problem- space in data from approximately 6 to 7 UTC according to display.

Skies are clear with the usual evidence of convection to the North, although it appears unorganized at this time.

Computers,satellite, profiler, RASS and surface tower functioning as expected.

We launched 2 sondes for the 0Z sounding as the first one had a weak signal and no wind data coming in.

We measured the LNA dc voltage out from the injector block:
11.4 was first seen at power up of rack....(was that correct?)
7.1 V was observed during sounding.

The system here has produced good soundings so it isn't worth
changing, but the voltage may be a bit shy and could cause
difficulty perhaps in a more noisy location elsewhere.

7/19/ 00:45 Reconfigured Power for GOAS computer/rack.

This system hasn't been on a UPS and consequently was getting
clobbered when the 'authorities' shut off trailer power.
This will take effect for the sounding on 7/19 12:00Z

In an attempt to allow the system to be backed up, we put the
UPS onto the surge supressor via 2-100' extension cords.  This
appears to work and the UPS is happier and hasn't shutdown due to
the overvoltage problem the setup crew encountered.
(NOTE the Clary specs are somewhat contradictory indicating in 1 place
132 and in another 135 as the max-input VAC.
NOTE the first time we tried the UPS was by itself plugged directly
into the wall outlet and it was fine.  Specs might be conservative?
NOTE the line voltage today is 134.5 so maybe the electrician 
improved the situation.)

Anyway we measured the drop from wall into UPS:
using the 4A halogen light: from 134.5 to ~127.
GAOS PC/Rack: from 134.5 to 131.5 on input to UPS.
This implies that the load is roughly ~2A for GAOS stuff.

The GAOS computer will be shutdown between soundings from now
on per Lou.   Rebooting the system now on the UPS worked just fine.
I grabbed the url for Clary UPS and downloaded the desc.sheet.

The crew was shown how to reconfigure to the way it was before if
that should be needed or desired.

We are back in Kino for a day.

PROFILER DATA BACKUP:
Backed up Profiler SPC files onto two CD's. Two copies of each, one for
the trailer and one to take home. The profiler was down for an hour during
the process. 1705-1803Z. Note that there is about 1.5GB free so good for
almost another 3 weeks. Disk is about 19% full (there is a mystery of what
is taking up about 400 MB of space on D:)

CLASS RECEIVER:
Checked the voltage on the CLASS pre-amp under load. 11.37 volts which is
fine. Much better than Los Moches was. ALso checked T-dome and T-case wiring
is correct. LATER: Checked the pre-amp again during a sounding and found
a lower voltage. Some effect of having the RF in the circuit? Conclusion is
is not to change the class receiver.

POWER
Line voltage to ISS is still too high at 134.2 V. JWM set up a workaround.
We have the UPS preceeded by two 100-foot extension cords to drop the voltage
to within the UPS limits.

Sonde launched late at due to power outage at approximately 1:00 -1:30pm local time and not turned on until approximately 6pm local time.

Having problems with our satellite link.

Power status:
Stopped by site this morning at 9AM to speak with the local electricians. They were not working. I spoke to the manager of the DICTUS site, he didn't know when they would be working but said he would tell us if he saw them working. Will have to keep checking on the site every few hours to try to catch them before they cut the power- most likely this will occur during the afternoon.

Brad waited at the site for an hour while I went back to the Hacienda, the electricians finally showed up at around 11AM. I spoke with them again and they told me they did not need to turn off the electricity today but possibly on Monday afternoon. They promised to give us warning before cutting the power.

Things didn't go as planned, the power was turned off on us at approximately 1:00-1:30 pm today. The electricians did try to contact us before hand but left no message. I am going to email Ramon, the manger of the DICTUS site, and tactfullystress that we need more notice about future power outages as well considerationof our launch schedule.

The power was restored at approximately 6-6:15 pm local time, we launched the sonde at approximately 6:45 pm local time.

Current weather: Overcast after this mornings launch, cleared off considerably. Only cumulus towers to the NNW, cirrus to the SSW.

Computers, profiler, RASS and surface tower functioning as expected.

Having some difficulty with our satellite link. Contacted Lou, will contact again if issue doesn't resolve itself.

Everything is on and working after power failure.  We had a tough time communicating with the electricians but determined with the help of the roving crew that since this was not an IOP that it wasn't worth the risk of losing another sonde due to another power failure.  Tomorrow we will power down after our 12z launch due to the replacement of the power lines at the site.

Meteorological conditions are as follows:
  At time of initial launch we had numerous convective towers in the mature stage over the water for the first time.  I was able to observe lightning and surface winds were the strongest yet.  At the current time all towers have dissipated and only cirrus clouds remain.

Voltage in the trailer was recorded after the power outage at 135.4 volts which is the highest that I have yet to measure.

For our 0z launch on July 16th we launched on time.  However, at approximately 750mb we had a power failure and lost everything.  At the Dictus site they are in the process of installing new power lines and we were given no heads up as to this outage.  It is currently 0015z (5:15 local) and we have half an hour to get off the balloon.  We talked with the electricians and it seems as though this may happen again as they are here working until 6:30 local time.  Tomorrow they plan on switching all electricity lines in the morning.  It seems that we will still be able to execute our launches as we are here from 3:30 to about 6:30 and they plan to begin at 8:00.  Our question has to do with the possibility of powering down equipment tomorrow due to the power outage.  We don't know how long it will last but will try to find out.  Our cell phone wasn't cooperating for a while and we were unable to contact the roving team, Los Mochis, or Puerto Penasco.  Lindsey at the Loreto site is working on finding someone to help us out.  As of now we have decided not to risk another launch incase of another power failure and we will wait to hear something different.  We are at the site and this is the best form of communication that we have at the current time.

The 10 second data was not updating, frozen on the same numbers throughout the 
whole sounding. Raw data coming in fine, sounding looked fine.

Current weather:
Large cumulus towers on the horizon to the east, evidence of convection- degraded towers, cirrostratus, stratocumulus to the north. The cloud cover has cleared some since this morning to approximately 1/8 sky coverage. Cooler ambient temps as well as water temps- waves are up in Bahia Kino.The easterly winds from this morning have moved through the south to the west and have incresed in speed to 6 m/s.

Computers, profiler, RASS and surface tower functioning as expected.

On 6th Helium tank.

2 bad sondes so far- third repaired.

During the 06Z and 12Z soundings the 10 second data was not updating, the raw met data was comming in fine, and the sounding looked fine.

Power-up went well.  Tested voltage in trailer at 135.4v, which is up from previous measurements.

Current weather:
The cumulus towers to the north have degraded as the day has progressed and now appear mostly as cirrus and stratus along the horizon- some cumulus in the NE. Last night during the July 11 06Z sounding experienced periods of heavy rain. It was not raining when we launched the sounding or left the site.

Steve, John, Charlie at Kino today. Hal flew home this morning.

We got to meet Jennifer and Brad. Sounding from here look very good.
They note a couple of times losing signal when the sonde travels far
to the SSE. No big obstructions in thtat direction.

We had an impressive lightning show at the Hermosillo hotel last
night, from about 9-9:45pm (4-4:45Z). The storm was moving East to West.

The Bahia Kino soap plots show rain aloft approx. 5:45-7:00Z and another
brief shower around 8:30Z.

Rain gauge shows rain at the surface: 0.4 mm near 6Z and another 0.1 mm near 7Z.
No tips around 8:30Z.

Profiler POP consensus winds look good, despite some bird clutter in the
individual dwells. Nice match of low winds with surface tower.

We added tie-downs to the rain gauge.
Checked profiler level: ok. In fact about as level as can be.

We checked the cabling on the PYG. Matches the notes from Puerto Penasco.
Data gap for a few of minutes, approx. 1916-1923 and again 1928-1933Z.
Dc on photopile 5H-5L ~.3mV on meter....ie no resolution to read.

Remotely fixed the tklog at Los Mochis. The log file had gottent corrupted, so I replaced it with the .auto file. They only lost one partial log entry.

Replaced the PYG at Kinoat about 1600 Z with the PYG from Los Mochis to test the Los Mochis sensor, it seems to work both without a battery and with a battery, the battery seems to reduce the output by about 10 to 20 Watts. I have returned the Kino Bay PYG to its stand.  John Millitzer should pick up the Los Mochis Pyg at Kino to return to Los Mochis.  John should check the wiring at Los Mochis especially the pins in the connectors.

COMMENTS (We encountered a problem with sonde # 408413413 and cancelled it.  We never launched the sonde and restarted the GLASS program with the new sonde.  I don't know what the problem was with the transmission signal when trying to locate the new sonde but I ended up turning off the AFC on the computer screen, manually shifting the frequency down to 402.05 on the screen, and then tuning the sonde until I reached 99db and the highest level of reception.  At the current time we have no way to toggle the AFC and we are getting static interference but the db is still at 99 and locked on our frequency so everything is going okay for now.After 200mb we resolved this problem.)

Atmosphere is beginning to change.  We had 7 to 8 oktas cloud cover today, almost overcast, for about 2 hours earlier this afternoon.  Cloud erosion is beginning to occur to the southeast but even more exciting is the appearance of a few convective towers including a cumulonimbus in the mature stage to the east near Hermosillo from our perspective.  Hopefully storms are not far behind.

diagonal nulls towards the sea.

Note that this system uses the RX/TX box and the computer from ISS2 because
of the repairs for the noise problem noted in a separate tklog entry.

COMMENTS Think that we got interference from Hermesillo 0Z radio sonde at about 325mb.

Conducting Bahia Kino training session.

Replacement parts arrived from Peurto Pensaco.

Replaced interface and rx/tx boxs which did not fix the problem.

Replaced computer and the noise went away, so the problem appears to be with
either the integrator card or the dsp card.

The system then had serious spectral spurs.
Tried increasing the delay and postblanking which helped, 
however this wiped out the lowest gates (< 200m) on RASS.

Replaced the new rx/tx with the original and the spurs went away.
Returned delay and blanking to original settings.

Profiler operating normally from about 4:20UT (July 4).

Weather fine, light SW seabreeze.  High approx 33C.  
Partly cloudy, cirrus.  Saw some nice mare's tail clouds.

Profiler - continued to suffer noise problem most of day,
however was repaired and is operating normally from about 0430 UT (July 4).

Approx 600 sondes arrived today.   
Charlie, Heather and Jennifer took approx 140 sondes to meet Gordan and Rebecca
about half way to Peurto Penasco, who brought down profiler replacement parts.

Hal did a training sonde with Nick & Brad.

Weather fine and clear, light SW seabreeze.  High approx 34C.  
Scattered high clouds gradually increasing this afternoon.


Profiler still has the intermittant internal noise problem.  
The problem seems to be either in the interface boxes or the integrator & dsp cards in the computer.  
Replacement computer and interface boxes have been shipped from Boulder.

The students went to Hermasillo to work on distributing the radiosondes.

For some reason the port forwarding in Winroute for ssh stopped working.

I fooled around with it for a while without luck.

Finally fixed it by removing the entry in Winroute, and reentering.

I noticed that the orginal entry only had tcp slected. When I reenterd the values, I changed this to tcp/udp. I don't think that should have caused the problem, though.

Weather fine and clear, light SW seabreeze.  High approx 34C.

Temperature/RH fan replaced about 1730 UT.

Profiler moved about late morning to behind the trailer to get better shielding from clutter from the lagoon.

Profiler also seems to have an intermittant internal noise problem which is being worked on.

Bill and Mike arrived yesterday evening.  Lou, Tim, Rebecca, and Gordan moved on to Peurto Penasco. .
