77: base_system, Site , Wed 29-Nov-2000 15:21:50 NZDT, change to crontab
I have changed the crontab time for the daily cron to
6:00 am local. This was done because satellite communication
is getting poor in the early afternoon. I also changed
netcdf_copy to send the netcdf file from 2 days ago instead
of yesterday so a complete netcdf file gets home.

70: base_system, Site , Tue 28-Nov-2000 10:33:21 NZDT, System going down again, 11.10 local
I am taking the base down again to try the
second hard disk.

68: base_system, Site , Tue 28-Nov-2000 09:33:12 NZDT, Second hard disk
I played with the second hard disk. As far as
I can tell all the parameters for networking were
set correctly. However, it did not work. It does
not see the network server when I do the command
nslookup. There may be another parameter not
being set in linuxconf.

67: base_system, Site , Tue 28-Nov-2000 09:31:05 NZDT, Base down for work on second hard disk
I brought the base down to configure the second
had disk for network communication. There was
one bad event. When I logged off as aster the screen
would give me a login prompt. It was hung up.
So I had to do the 3 key stroke to reboot.
The base has been down since 8:50 local time.

60: base_system, Site , Mon 27-Nov-2000 13:23:09 NZDT, CD hardware
May be the crash was a benefit because I
am able to read CDs where before I was having
some problems with both CD systems.

59: base_system, Site , Mon 27-Nov-2000 10:47:09 NZDT, BASE DOWN, ~20:00 to 21:45 GMT
I had a major crash with the base computer. While
trying to create a backup data cd, the cdwriter locked
up. It was constantly sending an error message about
writing. So I kill the process. I then could not get the
cd to eject. While my next idea was to cycle power on it.
CRASH! The laptop went through a reboot then complained
about a system file error. So I was dead in the water.
Tried reaching Gordon but no luck. I tried the backup
hard disk but it is outdated. So I tried the other disk.
It provided some useful info about correcting the
corrupt file manually. So I did and it worked.

A brief report on what has happened up to now.
Delays, delays, and more delays! This project has
been full of delays. It took 2 extra days to get to
the Pole due to bad weather. One extra day in Christchurch
and one in McMurcdo. The flight was long from Christchurch
to McMurdo, about 8 hours and crowded. The flight from McMurdo
to Pole was short, about 3 hours, only 11 people.
Unfortunately, flights were cancelled for the next 2 days so
the equipment did not arrive until last night.

The tower setup should not be too bad except for the weather.
The windchill is a big factor! I talked with the NOAA people
to go over the locations to mount sensors. They had some concerns
about interference with an albiedo measurement. So, decided to
put the sensors on the long side of the tower facing into the
fetch. This was probable the best side anyway.

We are short one long TRH boom. Icommunicated with Steve O. about
options and we came up with one.
