- 56: MAPR, Site MAPR Independence, CA, Fri 02-Apr-2004 19:31:47 GMT, MAPR mode change
Changed mode on MAPR, increased pulse width to 200m to try and increase range.
Doesn't seem too different as yet, but we will watch it.
- 53: MAPR, Site MAPR Independence, CA, Thu 01-Apr-2004 21:28:14 GMT, MAPR Mode change
Switched modes from wind100_rass100 to turb100_rass100 to increase
the velocity aliasing from 6.5 to 10 m/s.
Surface winds from the north (345-350 degrees) today with speeds
14 - 18 m/s after 20 Z.
- 50: MAPR, Site MAPR Independence, CA, Mon 29-Mar-2004 19:57:58 GMT, MAPR Generator Failure 28Mar04
The MAPR generator failed about 0800Z 28Mar2004. Not noticed until 0500Z 29Mar.
The failure was due to a clogged fuel filter on the large auxilarry fuel tank.
The fuel filter has a clear plastic body with allows visual inspection and the
filter was quite black. A second in-line fuel filter was also replaced but the
mechanic who replaced both filters said the second filter had only minor
restrictions. The MAPR site was back in operation about 1900Z 29Mar.
- 49: MAPR, Site MAPR Independence, CA, Sun 28-Mar-2004 06:18:23 GMT, MAPR reduced gates and aliasing
6 UT Reduced gates (now to 4.5km) and aliasing (now 7.3 m/s).
- 40: MAPR, Site MAPR Independence, CA, Thu 25-Mar-2004 01:43:38 GMT, MAPR mode change
Changed MAPR schedule to turb100_rass100 (had been wind100_rass100).
This widens the velocity aliasing to 10 m/s and increases sampling range to 5km in preparation for tonights IOP which is expected to be a very strong wave event.
- 37: MAPR, Site MAPR Independence, CA, Sun 21-Mar-2004 02:14:03 GMT, MAPR overheating problem
MAPR was down for two and a half hours (2230Z Mar 20 to 1Z Mar 21).
The symptoms were a brief sudden increase in signal at all heights, then no signal appearing on the receivers despite the transmitter apparently working ok. It was a hot day (28C with just a light wind). The air conditioner was working, but it was our hottest day yet and the temperature in the trailer was more than 80F.
I turned up the air conditioner which cooled the trailer to 70F and added another fan blowing into the yellow and white box, and the system came back to life. It now appears to be operating normally.
- 36: MAPR, Site MAPR Independence, CA, Sat 20-Mar-2004 02:49:24 GMT, MAPR MISS comparison
MISS moved to MAPR site for intercomparison experiment.
The profilers of both systems will alternate: the MISS profiler will operate for the first 30 minutes of each hour, and MAPR will operate for the second 30 minutes. MISS profiler initially is running winds only for it's 30 minutes. MAPR will run (from the top of the hour) 31 minutes of blank (ie no TX), then 24 minutes of winds, then 4 minutes of RASS, then another minute of blank mode. The extra minute at the beginning and end of the MAPR runs are to ensure there is no overlap.
MAPR started it's first run in this mode at 2:31UT (March 20).
At 3:30 UT adjusted wind mode (wind_MISS_match) to more closely match the MISS profiler settings (45 microsec IPP, 29 s dwell, 4 bit 100 m pulse, velocity aliasing at 10 m/s, 44 hgts to 4.7 km).
- 35: MAPR, Site MAPR Independence, CA, Fri 19-Mar-2004 00:11:26 GMT, MAPR down March 17
MAPR was down March 17 from about 6Z to about 17Z.
Charlie reports that is is the same resources problem seen previously.
Automatic restart failed due to a path problem - this has been fixed so the system should restart on future failures.

- 24: MAPR, Site MAPR Independence, CA, Fri 12-Mar-2004 13:22:39 GMT, MAPR downtime 7Z-13:22Z March 12
13:22Z: MAPR failed again, down from 7Z, restarted at 13:22Z (5:22am).
This looks like the same problem as on March 9 ("MAPR PC ran out of
resources" error message in log).
- 22: MAPR, Site MAPR Independence, CA, Wed 10-Mar-2004 18:19:45 GMT, MAPR today
18:19Z Mar 10: I changes clearair_100m mode to have a first gate of 400m
(was 300m). Maybe this will allow better data below 600m which has been
the first usable data so far.
Note that RASS was down most of the day. The cable to the sound amplifier
was loose.
- 19: MAPR, Site MAPR Independence, CA, Tue 09-Mar-2004 19:51:16 GMT, MAPR downtime
MAPR data stopped flowing to Boulder around 13Z (5am LT) March 9.
Upon arriving at the site, RASS speakers were active but the maprdisplay
software was not running. In fact, the only window on the MAPR pc
was a Shell-Konsole. I don't understand. MAPR was restarted at about 19:30Z
and is working fine.
Later note: Gary and Dennis found an error message in the logs that the
MAPR PC ran out of resources.(?)
- 18: MAPR, Site MAPR Independence, CA, Tue 09-Mar-2004 00:18:21 GMT, MAPR diagnostic plots
Bill plotted the signal and noise for each receiver for several short periods.
Last week, during a time when MAPR was operating well:
Noise levels relative to Rx#0: Rx0: 0dB; Rx1: -5dB; Rx2: +5dB; Rx3: 0dB
Signal levels had similar differences as noise so the SNR of all channels
should be about the same.
Sunday during the time of onset of MAPR's failure:
Levels seemed the same, but there was a "clutter" signal in all receivers,
strongest at low heights, but with some increased energy at all ranges.
This was strongest in Rx1; next strongest in Rx2; and present in Rx3 and Rx4.
Monday after Mike's changes in the Gold/White box:
Noise levels of all receivers were well matched. The signal levels may
have varied by up to 3 dB. But this all looks pretty good.
- 15: MAPR, Site MAPR Independence, CA, Sun 07-Mar-2004 22:26:19 GMT, MAPR Trouble shooting
Reconnected the yellow channel to the antenna at 2100+ ish and looks as though the snr has an increase at that time, as it should. Now we have a full 4 panels transmitting, which increases our antenna gain.
Added 6dB pads to the blue and yellow channels, yel first then an hour and half later the blue. No noticiible change in SNR. The blue channel does seem to have a lower SNR before the change as well as after... checked all connectors in line from the antenna to piraq with no solution. Voltages are identical and gain numbers between channels pretty even. The blue channel actually has the highest gain.
Found a pretty loose connection to the yellow channel inside the gold/white box. Tightened it and the rest of the connectors in the box. The others could have been tighter as well, but nothing bad. Going to add hotmelt glue to the connectors to ensure they don't come lose again. Heated the entire box so it was uncomfortable to the touch and can't get it to fail.... Hope things are fixed....
- 10: MAPR, Site MAPR Independence, CA, Sat 06-Mar-2004 01:42:16 GMT, MAPR trouble shooting
Today at mapr:
I arrived this morning about 10:30 and MAPR was operating fine. Then by 11:30 or so it,the problem, arose.
Just did gain measurements from ~2:15 to 2:40 UTC. Started system again and it works so far.
- 8: MAPR, Site MAPR Independence, CA, Thu 04-Mar-2004 23:39:38 GMT, MAPR tests and failures today
We note that MAPR has failed and unfailed several times. In the SNR plots
it starts by showing high SNR (clutter or other?) in the lower gates with
an increased SNR in all gates (even where we expect no signal). Then
nothing soon after.
We turned off MAPR and began tests at 0016 on 05 Mar 2004, tried many
things with signal generators etc. No conclusions.
Turned on again at 0507, and things seem to work.
Investigation to be continued.
- 4: MAPR, Site MAPR Independence, CA, Thu 04-Mar-2004 00:58:31 GMT, MAPR Tx problem
MAPR Tx apparently stopped at 22Z. (March 3, 2004). This had happened once
before during the setup period. System was turned off overnight, and worked
fine when turned on in the morning. Mike is working on it.
- 3: MAPR, Site MAPR Independence, CA, Wed 03-Mar-2004 19:54:18 GMT, MAPR summary for IOP#1 (Wednesday March 3, 16Z to 21Z)
Today (Wednesday March 3) during IOP#1 MAPR winds are good from 600 m to
about 1.5 km. Below 600 m must be clutter, we should see if changing the
blanking can help. Weak reflectivity above 1.5 km. Winds aloft are about
6 m/s from 330 degrees. I can see some variation in vertical velocity, but
not a clear wave signature.
End of day Wednesday: Tx problem may have been caused by RASS mode having
a long HPA duration. But we changed it. Now Tx is transmitting but the
received signal is very weak. Could be that its after sunset and the BL
has collapsed.
Also, we are concerned that there are no good winds below 600m. Mike
will change the blanking to test.
We will look again tomorrow.
