Last two launches of the NAME project at LMM had no problems. This marks
the end of data collection at this site and all operators depart for US
on Aug. 16

We cleaned the trailer up a bit and powered down the system per ATD roving
crew instructions.

Wx on this last shift:

Pretty boring with just fair weather cumulus clouds and warm at the
18Z sounding.

This should be the last 00Z launch for the project unless we hear otherwise. Two more launches in the morning at 12 Z and 18Z.

The satellite phone is still out of order. The motosat went completely down
around the 16Z launch, so we are without internet access until the roving
crew can look into the problem. They are here in LMM, so hopefully will
be back on line by this evening. We instructed the next team to send the
sounding data for the 16Z and 20Z soundings as soon as we get motosat
functioning.

We encountered two sondes which seem to be defective and were not used:

408400801: Bad RH data (read 100%)

408400808: Did not lock on to GPS signal.

Wx: A few altocumulus clouds cleared up by 16Z, and then it cleared, warmed,
and dried by 20Z.

We tried multiple ways to fix the satellite phone and it is still not working. I was able to place a call to the states by using the incorrect jack and listening only to the computer speakers. The quality was very poor but it worked incase we need to make a call. Any suggestions, please let us know.

The problem that the previous shift noted with the lights has been fixed:
The light bulbs were burnt out in the normal lights, and the switch was off
in the halogen lights. These were both fixed, so the flourescent lights weren't
needed. :)

No problems. Lights were not working upon our arrival this morning. We checked the outlets and the power and were receiving power. Unsure what the problem is. We used the flourescent lights. The outside outlet problem the previous shift had was solved by resetting the outlet. Power works fine now.

The campbell window had been closed we couldn't get numerical surface data. The system was rebooted and everything is working fine now.

Weather on this shift was rather tranquil. Light winds this morning with stars and occassional lightning flashes to the North. Convection cleared then redeveloped to the southeast as winds gradually increased. Currently we are under mostly sunny skies with a few fair weather cumulus draping over the airport.

Fan on temp. sensor was out upon arrival. The roaming crew was contacted and inquired about a spare fan. The temp. sensor is working fine now.

I left a message with Aeropacifico this morning inquiring on air cargo service
to Loreto (they have the only service from LMM). It may be necessary to
transport a box of sondes next week. To the roving crew or Mike, please
advise us on when they want sonde transport to occur and how many sondes.
Since the ticket agents probably don't speak English well (or at all), it is
best if I handle it. Please give me an response on this issue by Monday
afternoon, as I will be taking a few days off after that.

Started off morning with a mostly cloudy stratus deck. Convection appeared off to the east over the mountains with constant lightning flashes. The convection has since died off and the skies have cleared with some cirrus. Temperatures have climbed to around 33 so far at the airport. The only aircraft activity thus far is around 18 Z. It is a pretty in active day at the airport.

Problem sondes: All the problem sondes at this site have been placed in a

IMPORTANT' note for this shift for more info.

For this IOP, we used 2 sondes according to instructions from Mike
Susedik and the roving crew. We have instructed other crews to switch
back to '408' sondes at the end of current IOP.

We successfully downloaded the coefficient file for the '2' sondes that
had been missing. No longer necessary to enter in coefficients for those
sondes manually.

Wx on this shift:

There appeared to be a line of convection that rolled off the SMO and approached
the LMM site between the 4Z and 8Z soundings. Low level moisture increased
significantly from the 18Z 31 Jul sounding. Though there was very intense
lightning to the south and east of the site, the convective line
dissipated towards 8Z and we observed no rainfall here.

We were told of problems before this shift with sonde coefficients and files,
so we tried three different boxes of sondes, one for each launch, to test the
different coeffiecients.

All three launches went smoothly, the two sondes beginning with "408" worked
fine. We do not have a file for the "2" sondes, but we manually entered the
coefficients which worked fine also. There do not seem to be any more problems,
the previous shift probably just happened to have 2 bad sondes. We don't think
that there should be any more problems with sonde shortages right now.

In continuum of Chris Castro's observations and suggestions (See his IMPORTANT
message)regarding an immediate sounde shortage for tomorrow, ATD's response was to not post any coefficient files on website, but rather maually enter files for both "4" and "2" soundes, since it was believed this was our best bet.

Upon hearing this, we attempted to manually enter coefficient values for our
last shift launch, but similiar inaccurate measurements were produced.
(Read previous IMPORTANT log file for details.) At this rate, we believe that
the "4" soundes are simply faulty and cannot be used since no other methods
are available.

However, no attempt was made to manually enter files for the "2" soundes.
We suggest for next night shift launch to try to do this for the 00Z sounding. It should require an additional "10 mins" of prep time to read values and imput into GLASS.

In order to do this: intentionally enter incorrect file of serial number on
sounde in GLASS. Once GLASS realizes incorrect file, an option allowing for
manually entry will pop-up. The series of values appearing on coefficient tape
are in same order as the GLASS value entry page. Read off one by one.

Weather was climatologically normal. Hail was observed upon our drive in, with
evidence of outflow boudaries and nocturnal ligtening embedded within convective
updrafts. Winds remained moderate throughout morning, and began to veer during
late morning hours. Presently, cumulus field and some congestus are observed
in all directions. We will anticipate another late-afternoon and early morning
rain event.

Not a good shift here at LMM. Several important issues that kept us busy:

1. Launches

Had successful launches for all three synoptic times in this IOP, but the wind
data are missing for the 0Z and 8Z soundings. Given our new criteria for
relaunches as suggested by ATD, we did not attempt relauch for mixing wind
data. One of the balloons had a couple of small holes in it, so we had to use
four balloons on this shift. The damaged balloon was saved in case it may
be salvaged.

2. Sonde situation: MOST URGENT!!

PLEASE READ E-MAIL SENT IN REPLY TO MIKE SUSEDIK REGARDING THIS ISSUE. WE NEED IMMEDIATE RESPONSE FROM ATD AND/OR ROVING CREW WITHIN NEXT 24h.

In short, we MUST obtain the coefficient files for the "2" sondes by 0Z Friday
or we are OUT of workable sondes at LMM as of the current IOP. We have
instructed the morning shift to take immediate action on this first thing Wed.
morning. In addition, we have taken an inventory of sondes and their
respective coefficients and are now including this information in our daily
log (see sonde count above).

3. Security bill

There is a bill for security services provided here at LMM which is due 1 Aug. This bill was forwarded to Mike Susedik this evening and our team leader has
been provided with copies of the bill in Spanish and English. Please direct
all inquires on this matter to myself (Chris Castro) as I am serving as the
translator on site. ATD should have known about this beforehand, so hopefully
this is not a surprise.

Wx conditions:

As today's Wx discussion noted, LMM is directly under a high pressure ridge.
So our balloon had an almost vertical ascent for the sounding which we have
wind data. There was the typical diurnal convection and some stratus clouds
that rolled in on the SE breeze from the GoC.

In regards to yesterday's email concerning sounde shortages, it appears that
the initial course of action taken upon to inventory all sites is the
posted report of remaining soundes, balloons, and tanks of helium for every
daily log submittal. From here, this reports will then posted on the ATD web
site so that the transportation of sounde surplus can be completed.

As of 20Z:

Balloons: 115
Tanks of Helium: 30 ( + half empty tank still being used)
Soundes: 117

Other orders of business as follows:
Coefficient files for soundes beginning with "2" are yet to be found by crew
and authority. Expect an e-mail with this file so these soundes can be
launched.

The current Roving Team, John and Steve are MIA, while their cell phones
aren't working. Mike and Lou have been attemptingto contact them for most of
theday regarding our "power issue" and the malfunctioning 3rd UPS box. A call
was placed by Lou today requesting the location of the voltage meter within ISS 4 trailer so we can measure the potential power flow. However, Chris and myselfcould not locate this device, and speculate that John and Steve acquired it
upon their departure to Kino Bay.

Arrival of two new student crew members are still expected to arrive within
this week. Preparations should be made by teams to determine who will be
able to pick them up from here, and back to hotel. Other details concerning
this are on the note.

Lastly, IOP ended upon our last launch, no word on next IOP just yet. Weather
was especially windy and overcast. Based on our saturated soundings, UL dynamics appear to have decreased, while lower-levels have enhanced in more moisture
advection.
Light drizzle from stratiform deck was observed this morning, while oregraphic
lift towards the south produced some form of convective banding. As inverted trof draws near within next 24hrs, the question remains how much diurnal heating
will the SFC recieve in order to initiate deep moist convective activity for MCS/MCC development. In either case, moderate amounts of precipitation can be expected. Temperatures were significantly cooler throughout morning, and wind direction veered to the south.

The equipment seems to be working fine at the moment.

Log entry #139 has been modified with title and site location.

The shift started with some convection just north of city proper Los Mochis and gradually spread southward. Some light scattered lightning was observed, but winds remained calm following the end of business at the airport. The air feels more humid than previous. Soundings looked really good.

Arrived at 1000Z

Rather successful launching day. An e-mail to UCAR employees was sent earlier
this morning regarding the potential shortage of radiosondes expected to be
exhausted around the last week of operations.

Be advised: Any reply regarding this issue will concern preparations or
arrangments to correct this problem. Moreover, the transportation of surplus
sondes from other ISS sites to sites reporting deficits will probably be
the main course of action.

One balloon popped today before the release of a sounde. Chris and I speculate it touched something sharp or hot along the side of trailer, everything else
was operational, though it scared the sh*t out of us.

Water is low, and hopefully to be replenished sometime tomorow. And cell phone
minutes also needs to be readded.

Lower-Level South-Easterlies progressively increased throughout morning,
as many balloons imediately become dominated by STJ streak deepening
over sonora and sinaloa. Winds speeds in early morning were less than 1m/s, where they presently appear to be upwards of 8 m/s.

According to zone forecast discussion on JOSS homepage,
heavy precip maxes and the occurence strong
convective activity are forecasted to begin within next 24hrs.
According to our soundings, we can see the intrusion of dry air at
mid-levels (also indicated on current water vapor imagery) and moderate
saturation at lower-levels in conjuction with advection from threatening
inverted trof towards the east. This should provide sufficient convective
instability as we have already begun to observe developing cumulus and
congestus throughout the day, indicative of the developing deep moist
convection.

Some problems regarding the previous three launches executed by the night shift. It appears that after 3 attempts the 08Z sounding still did not register nor submit to GFS, due to serveral sounding computer freezes and inaccurate observations with their selected radiosondes. Upon our arrival, first course of duty was to shut-down entire system to avoid any computer freexes for subsequent 12Z launch. In doing so, there was another problem regarding a power failure for the 3rd UPS unit. As a temporary solution, the power cords running laptop and motosat devices are now being run into 2nd UPS unit for the time being. This 3rd UPS indicated green lights suggesting that the unit was functioning, but to no avail, there was simply no flowing power. To avoid any potential mistakes, Chris and I thought it was best to run these systems through 2nd UPS unit. After this switchover, systems and launches throughout the morning revealed no signs of error or problems. We will leave power setup as is, until next arrival of crew team can determine how to better handle this problem.

Weather was normal today, some nocturnal lightening was present early this morning, with mostly mid to upper level moisture dominating throughout morning and early afternoon. Tendencies in SFC pressure remained minimal, and prevailing winds out of the south were observed with some backing and veering. RH progressively decreased, and wind speed had abruptly increased after 1800Z. Development of fair-weather cumulus off to the N and NE, with the possibility of congestus and some deep moist convection later this afternoon.

Arrived at 2200 Z

The morning shift reported problems with the frequencies, and our
first sonde may have had the same problems. We had a 0 db for the signal
the entire way, and the wind data was in and out for the first couple hundred
millibars (only about 50-70% of the data was received) but was good after that.
The sonde made it to about 220 mb, and the signal was lost. We decided not to
relaunch because of what seemed like good enough data, and a possible
shortage of sondes later on in the project at this site.

The second sonde went smoothly to 35 mb.

The third launch appeared to be going well, but at 307 mb the sounding
system computer locked up, and the desktop, LABVIEW, or anything else could
not be accessed. The roving crew did not answer a call, and we could not get
any data out of the launch, so we decided to re-launch and prepared
another sonde. This sonde had a problem with the sensor, and was
receiving relative humidity data at 95-100%, which was far from correct. We
opened ANOTHER sonde, and kept the broken one for possible repair. This launch
did not go well either for the souding computer, with the raw MET data not
scrolling, and possibly not coming in at all, nor was the position data, or the
ten second data. We tracked the sonde as best as possible, and hoped that the
data would be in ASPEN. There wa no raw MET data in ASPEN. There is only wind
data available for this launch.

The weather was partly cloudy for the shift, and windy at first
but calmed down later.

Our shift was the start of IOP #3 with 6 launches per day.

There are 133 sondes remaining at this site.

Arrived at 1000 Z

Congrats to Steve and John for improving total signal strength for YAGI and OMNI antennaes. Both Launches exceeded 40mb with an average remaining signal of 20db upon descent after popping. There is, however, a new concern for interference with another power source with our enhanced signal. Possible 0Z and 12Z sounding from Mazatlan or Airport traffic may pose a threat. Otherwise, launch times will be prolonged.

This new increased signal may have to be monitored in Campbell box, since this where it is recieving its voltage. Steve and John had purchased switches that would permanently allow this power source for the remainder of the experiment. However, authority to do so wont be approved till this afternoon

The other main issues for today is the Campbell coeffieient adjustment within the SFC obs program. John will also be working on this will collaboration with UCAR via phone and e-mail this afternoon

No important weather events of note this morning.

The first launch @6Z was much more successful than yesterday much stronger
signal strength, and much more stable.
Airport traffic was at a minimum. Also notice that the sondes were heading
to the S/SE instead of N/NW which may be a factor.
Last night (early Z), mostly overcast with episodes of rain and drizzle.
Thunderstorms in the area. Clearing skies throughout the morning.
Temps were much cooler indicative of outflow boundary produced by an MCS

All outside equipment was funcioning well.

Arrived at 2200z and Steve and John were still in the trailer. Our first
radiosonde marked the end of the IOP, therefore we only were scheduled for 2
launches tonight.

The first launch encountered problems and only climbed to about 650 mb. The
sonde there after began to fall, we suspect it was a slow leak in the balloon.
The balloon had not gone far from the trailer, and we were actually able to
recover the radiosonde which landed just off the airport grounds. We did a
relaunch about 45 minutes after synoptic time, at 0045z. We figured it was
better to launch late than never. The relaunch was a success and made it to
75mb, after some initial concern with the signal strength. Steve and John are
looking into the signal strength display on the rack. Our second launch of the night at 0600z had no problems.

It was mostly cloudy for a great majority of the day. As many clouds as I've
seen in my 3 weeks in Los Mochis. A few sprinkles fell today at the airport and in the city. Winds were light earlier on and calmed some around sunset. The
winds have increased some since then. There is again some lightning visable off
to the north and west.

Ten second data in the GLASS system is still not functioning.

We are currently in the process of changing around the work schedule.

Mostly cloudy today with moderate mid-level cloud deck, with developing cumulus indicative of shallow moist convection, and patchy congestus throughout early afternoon. LL moisture appeared to increase throughout morning, and winds shifted from the E towards the SW after sunrise.

All equipment remained functional today, however signal strength after launches appeared relatively weaker today. Intrusions of static began to appear shortly before 500mb, though this data was sufficient to be processed, and QC'ed on Aspen

The addition of two more crew members arrived today at approx 1700Z. John and Steve were mostly concerned about the preceding problem, and were curious of protocol and lauch procedure. They participated for the 20Z launch and inquired on the location of Operation Manuals in the trailer. They plan on maintaining the data manager, and perhaps cleaning disk on profiler computer.

Chris Castro is expected to also arrive at 6:40 LST, and will catch a ride with John and Steve later tonight. After the departure of Chris Franks on Friday, Chris Castro will presumably take his place, with the possibility of alternating team member shifts for the weekend.

IOP is expected to end on 0Z Thursday. And Night Shift will switch to EOP phase.

No other major problems/issues, though water supply needs to be replenished.

The previous shift was having many problems with the computers and tklog, which was the reason for no daily log for that shift

We took data by hand until tklog was fixed by charlie, which happened at about
0100 UTC. The data was transferred into tklog.

Problems with computers continued throughout the shift, we rebooted the entire system, which worked well, but during the 0600 sounding the sounding system
restarted itself, causing a loss of sounding data.

Both soundings during our shift were launched twice, the first due to the string from the balloon to sonde not releasing and not wind data being received and the second due to the crsah of the sounding system computer.

Everything seems to be working fine now, and no computer problems are expected for the next shift. Brian will remain at the site through the next shift so he
can work the day shift for the next several days with Nick and Rebecca. Chris will be working the night shift with Liam and Isaac.

Bug within 10sec smoothed GLASS sounde data still present, otherwise lauches relatively successful. With respect to yesterday, flight times were more prolonged as crew members enhanced signal strength and aspirator was moved into field.

IOP extended until saturday 6Z, and student schedule spreadsheet was changed for this adjustment

Greatest concern today was the significant deviation from sounde pre-testing obs from that of the SFC obs. Hal and Charlie were present, and suggested that future shifts monitor this problem, and delay further progression on GLASS system until observations from both sounde and SFC tower appear with sufficient range. Moreover, the fan on the aspirator should be left on the sounde for awhile before measurements are recorded.

Weather was especially nice today, upper-level moisture dried out from yesterday, light to moderate winds prevalent out of the south, and mostly fair wx cumulus with some developing tops were observed all morning. Surface RH and pressure gradually fell today as well.

Rebecca Torres, the sixth member for Los Mochis is expected to arrive today at approx 5:00 LST and subsequent shift arrangements will probably be redesignated. All students feel confortable with handling 12hr shifts, however word from UCAR says that a surplus of this overtime may have not been budgeted. Three 8hr shifts may have to be worked out. The third rental car was also left here today

Runway traffic was heavy during the times of 14-15Z, and 18 -19Z which may have caused interference with profiler measurements. Otherwise, good shift...a huge thanks to team green for the bug spray, and we'll bring you water tomorow.
