level history to date:

levels were first hooked up Wed (I think) to 4m uw. Since the "pigtail"
cable was labeled backwards, these channels were hooked up to the 10m
channels (ragwort 106&107) and pitch and roll were probably reversed.

On Thurs, I did several tests (including loosening the back guys to
check the change in angle and ended up with levels hooked up to the
10m uw on the right channels. The result of these tests were that
I think the BNCs on the display unit are labeled correctly (since
"P" changed by .4 deg (from .42 tight to .00 loose) and "R" changed
by .1 deg (from 1.2 tight to 1.1 loose) with the back guy loosened.
This means that "Y" on the display is roll and "X" is pitch. This
should all be confirmed at the end of the experiment.

On Fri (again, I'm not sure of the day) I switched back to the 4m uw
now on the right channels.

Today (Sat) I noticed that xcockpit showed that pitch.4m had changed
from about -1.8 to -1.0 overnight - I'll check the guy wires today.

Also, the cables are labeled strangly in the level box. At the
moment they are:
Red "18m" goes to the 10m uw
Red unlabeled goes to the 4m uw
BNC "A" is ragwort:107 (roll.10m)
BNC "B" is ragwort:106 (pitch.10m)
BNC "C" is ragwort:105 (roll.4m)
BNC "D" is ragwort:104 (pitch.4m)
I should get to relabeling these cables today, since this is too
much for a normal human (myself included) to understand.

I had hooked up the sonic transducer cables wrong, which was causing v and w

Note that I couldn't reach NIST, so I used the time difference I remembered

These files may be found in the usual place,ie.

Backup done and files killed - bad tape?

This was done from home again. This time I did not "mt offline",
since we may want to append to this tape if no one gets out there
tomorrow. Note that this tape had some problems. I got an I/O error
the first time I ran bkfiles. Then I rewound and did tape_init, which
aborted with another I/O error and a core dump. I rewound and tried
tape_init again, which appeared to work normally. Finally, I manually
did "tape_store dummy rad prop psyc uw comp" (I hope I got the order
right!), which also appeared to work - with the directory looking normal.

I would have thrown out this tape and used another blank tape if I had
been there, but I wasn't about to drive 2 hours just to recover today's
data during a non-IOP. Hopefully, whatever the problem was cleared itself.

Author should default to last author in the session.

Type already defaults this way, which is not as desirable since
we mostly enter all comments of one type into one comment per
session. For example, this comment really has two pieces of
information - one suggesting a default for author and another
suggesting a lack of a default for type - which are being entered
as one. In this session, I might next comment on the weather or
the performance of a sensor (though I won't since I am logged in
remotely!), which would require totally different types.

These tables will be useful for Splus,

10m Speed and Direction Plots

I rewrote some scripts to implement the 10m
speed and direction plots for ARM91. The
script ~aster/scripts/comp_uv10m writes a
file with the prop vane u and v wind components
from all levels and places it in the directory
ARM91/results/profiles. The output file is named
prop#. The script is executed as
comp_uv10m .

The plot is made from S using, e.g.
fun.winds("profiles/prop#059"). The exact
file name depends on the directory from which
you are running S. Any directory under
~aster will work; the example assumes
~aster/projects/ARM91/results. The source
file for the S function is ~horst/sfun/winds.platte.

I plotted all past data, including that prior
to Feb 19 when the wind direction error in the
prop vanes was corrected. For data prior to
Feb 19, I added commands to winds.platte to
multiply the u and v wind components by -1.
This S function source file is ~horst/sfun/
winds.platte.err.

218: OPERATIONS , Site none, Fri 08-Mar-1991 08:36:20 MST, NEW GRAPH ROUTINES:
NEW GRAPH ROUTINES:

Over the last week a variety of
new scripts have been written to do graphs.
Below is a discription of some of those routines.

GRAPHPAK: graphpak was designed to combine a number
of the standard graphic packages we use. These are
graph_rad, graph_ts, graph_baro, compsyc, and compwind.
The input string to the graphpak is the same format as
has been used for the other routines above. The only
difference is you have to tell it what you want to
plot.

USAGE: graphpak wind <-s -d>>

EXAMPLES: "graphpak 67 psyc -w" "graphpak 63 baro"

note: for psyc and wind, you must add the additional parameter.

XYCOS, XYRAG, XYMAR: These packages provide xy plots of any
parameter coming in on their respective ADAM. The switches
available let you do differences vs one parameter or time,
simple x vs y, and one parameter vs time.

USAGE: xycos <-d -dt>

EXAMPLES: "xymar 66 pyg.in.rad pyg.out.rad -dt"
	  "xyrag 54 u.4m.uw null"

notes: parm1 and parm2 are the x and y components. The
proper input string is the "did" configuration
name. As an example, for the 4m Krypton sensor the
	input string would be: q_h2o_uv.4m.uw
if null is used as the second parameter, a time
	series plot of parm1 results.
Switches -d or -dt are optional, if not used the
	plot is parm1 vs parm2.
	switch -d: parm1-parm2 vs parm1
	switch -dt: parm1-parm2 vs time

PLOTQ: plotq is a special package for comparison
plots between the Krypton sensors and the Vaisala
sensor at the 4m height. The format for this script
is similar to the xy scripts. Only one input parameter
is required, y. the x component is defaulted to the
vaisala component. If you want a plot of the krpton at
4m vs 10m, use xyrag.

USAGE: plotq <-d -dt>

EXAMPLE: "plotq 23 q.4m" "plotq 45 q.10m -dt"

notes: parm possibilities are "q.4m" and "q.10m".

xstrip for awhile, it appears that the 10m sensor is not
responding the same as the 7m and 4m. We will try to lower
the tower today to do some servicing on it.

update: As discovered before, the fan may be our problem
at 10m. It may have slipped out again.

I did this between the 5 min writes

another error in the covar file while

7m wind speed & direction plot

I modified the Splus wind speed and
direction plotting routine to alternately
plot the 7m winds rather than the 10m.
This is invoked with the optional input
variable, altprop=T, e.g.:

fun.winds("prop#070",altprop=T)

PROP - 10m:

The 10m prop was removed at about 21:30 GMT.
The problem was in the 4490 debounce switch used for speed
pulses. The sensor was repaired and installed at 22:30 GMT.

zo analysis

I've fitted several "near-neutral" cases for zo (all 1 hour long):
using displacement heights:

Day Beg Dir zo err disp z/L
            cm cm/s cm
48 16 163 4.7 1.0 10 -0.015
55 17.5 18 2.6 2.1 20 -0.025
56 22 338 2.4 0.8 20 -0.011
61 00 67 6.9 2.0 00 0.005
65 13 336 2.7 1.4 15 0.013
71 06 5 3.2 2.1 10 0.002
73 21 140 3.2 2.1 20 -0.085

Obviously, a good value for zo for northerly cases is 3cm and disp=20cm.
Also, other directions are different.
