IOP #8
03Z sounding. It hit the tether sonde and caught on the
second sonde (from bottom). Pulled in the tether and freed it.
After that lost wind updates but still was receiving satelites.
NO WINDS. Talked about re-lauch with Bill Brown - we were going
to but then decided not to.
The signal strength was still high and we were concened about
signal interference with a second launch (assuming the same
freq) and in addition interference with the subsequent 5Z launch.
Good PTU data from the 3Z flight.
Low level southerlies giving way to westerlies higher up.
Terminated sounding at roughly 100mb.
Sfc obs @ launch:
860.5mb, 9.1 deg C, 68.1% RH, 3.0 m/s @ 109.6 deg

IOP #8
00Z sounding went very well.
Low level southerlies giving way to westerlies higher up.
Terminated sounding at roughly 50mb.
Sfc obs @ launch:
861.33mb, 14.2 deg C, 44.8% RH, 4.2 m/s @ 148 deg
- 84: RADAR, Site vtmx, Wed 25-Oct-2000 20:48:54 GMT, Russian Data, starting the regular sampling mode now and comments about the over sampling
starting the 30 gate mode at 20:55 25 Oct
Stopped the Praskov mode at 23:32, had a crash in the
middle.
From Charlie,
Yep, it looks like the Praskov configuration will generate
about 2 GB/hour. For the 40 gate mode, it is
2.3 GB/hour. For the 30 gate mode, it would be
1.7 GB/hour. All other computing in ATD will have
to stop while they analyze this.
I didn't see the problem with the schedule not
working. Your mode vtmxwind1 has 30 gates
and vtmxwind2 has 40 gates. Looking at
the tms files, I see the following:
24-oct 21_45 30 gates
24-oct 22_00 40
24-oct 22_15 40
24-oct 22_30 40
24-oct 22_45 40
24-oct 23_00 40
24-oct 23_15 40
24-oct 23_30 40
24-oct 23_45 40
25-oct 00_00 30
25-oct 00_15 30
So I think that the tms files show a two hour cycling of the mode. Maybe
the mode label in mapr display is not working.
I think they were looking for nci =66 for both test cases. It looks
like
vtmxwind1 has nci=200.
The NCI is now changed.
- 83: RADAR, Site vtmx, Wed 25-Oct-2000 19:14:55 GMT, RASS enabled and disabled
RASS has been enabled for 25 minutes of wind and 5 minutes of RASS
through the scheduler at 25 Oct 19:15. Using ARMISS to generate the
sound and MAPR to collect the data.
RASS ran sucessfully for a few dwells and then crashed. Disabling
now at 20:46 25 oct.
- 82: SABL, Site vtmx, Wed 25-Oct-2000 17:26:07 GMT, Leak fixed on SABL
So far changing the couplings has fixed the leak of
coolant for SABL. Pulse seems really weak. Room got
pretty warm last night.
- 81: RADAR, Site vtmx, Wed 25-Oct-2000 17:22:47 GMT, A-E test has to be redone with NCI set to 200
NCI set to 200 for set one and it needs to be reset to 66, set 2
was set to 66..... Will rerun test for mode one again today, mode
2 done.
- 80: RADAR, Site vtmx, Tue 24-Oct-2000 19:39:40 GMT, testing for SNR line in the middle alt
Set the codes from 2 to 1 at 19:30 to run for an hour and then
look to see if the signal plot shows a middle line. Ending test at
20:34 and looking at the signal plot. It does appear that the line
in the middle has dissapeared from the signal level time graph.
- 79: RADAR, Site vtmx, Tue 24-Oct-2000 18:05:42 GMT, RASS enabled, A & E data, now started till tomorrow, NOT! huge amounts of data here!!! ouch! stopped at 0:53 25 Oct
I have attached a cord from the sun-ws head phone jack to the
audio amp and RASS should be ready to run.
If there is no IOP I will start up Alex and Elenores data taking
experiment in the multimode format. I have replaced lo and hi
with 1 and 2 for the 2 modes. If there is an IOP I still might
take an hour of the data.
Started the AE stuff at 21:18 24 Oct 2000, currently looks like
really good data from 700 m to 900 m. in the spectra. Holy shite,
every 15 minutes its collecting 555M in .tms files!!! holy bad
dung!!!!
Stopped taking data because it is just to large. Stopped at 0:53

then appears on the web site. Perhaps Tim or Erik, when he arrives can advise. I
am looking at the web page at
http://www.atd.ucar.edu/sssf/projects/VTMX/realtime/summary/summary-class.html
There are a lot of soundings that Bill and I thought looked bad, kind of as ugly
as Gary Barnett saying his team is the best 1 win team in the country.
Ok first questions first. When to relaunch..........
The 0000 UTC sounding is the most crucial not to miss. I note as an example the
2350 UTC launch on 17 October goes only to about 700 mb. The 16 Oct launch at
23:24 UTC is kind of strange looking, but probably contains some usable
information. Thus, I would say if the data for wind and thermodynamics is not
usable for large layers below 500 mb. It deserves a relaunch. Keep track as you
know of the raw data and see if it is usable as the 10 s processor seems to have
real problems in putting 9999's up when the raw data looks good. The skewt's on
the web are quick look processed so watching the raw data is the key.
500 mb is ok for the 0000 UTC as I do not think that there is a turnaround
problem with the 0000 UTC launch falling into other launches. My gut feeling is
to relaunch any of the other times if the data contains large layers of
non-usable data below 650 or 700 mb even if it means that another launch might
be a little late say up to 30 mins after the hour.
Under these procedures, you should do a relaunch on the gif image you sent. I
should have inquired about the general procedure at SSSF for a sonde relaunch
and given some criteria. I should be out there for the whole time, but I can not
get away because of IHOP. Also about sonde procedures, please inform all passing
through to call Tim at the tether site when there is such a problem as Tian had
the other night that way only one sonde will have problems not a few.
The only reason I brought it up is that all it takes is a couple of bad sondes
to make an integrated look at that IOP nearly useless leading to the typical
situation of a few IOPs studied in a big expensive experiment. Also it was
either Ned or Tim that claims that the battery package should not go into the
sonde compartment for GPS sondes as it might cause some problems.
So I guess the bottom line is those are the criteria for relaunch and pay
attention to the raw data and not the plots here or the 10 s. I know that you
know this later fact. I am sure that you give a good briefing and teaching a
sonde launch, but just make sure that folks know to call Tim if there are
problems. Having him down the road there is a real bonus. I somehow trashed the
config file one night and if it was not for him I would not have known what to
try. I know that the VTMX shuffle express that has developed is not good for
data but is partly the result of Bill, James and Steve's situation. If it was
not for the babies of there than we would not be in this shuffling business.
As for the last sonde. You should keep including it. There seems to be a strange
transition in the PBL that occurs near 10 am or so. The tether operations will
change for a closer look by delaying their battery exchange. how is our sonde
count? If we have 12 IOPs and launch the last sonde for all of them, than will
we have enough sondes. Do we need to ship out a few more?
So is that all?
Best regards and thank you-
Dave
p.s. Please cut and attach the following to post
and the second one for Tian. Also Erik, note Tian's tasks.

>If I see the raw data still coming in, but no ten S
>data on the screen and no 10 S data passed to the
>Sun I don't know if I can assume the flight didn't work.
I guess ask Tim. I think looking at the raw data frequently, especially for the
0000 UTC flight is the best. There are strange occassions when the raw data is
getting winds, but they are constant and really bogus, but in general I think
that watching the raw data is the key. I guess if we are down for a while
perhaps Tim could work on figuring why the 10 s data is 9999's even when the raw
data looks great. However, when I asked Ned about this problem, I recall getting
"a we will look at it later in Boulder, it has been a problem for a while"
response. He also noted that the 10 s data can be improved greatly with
reprocessing.
>If I wait till it gets passed to the sun, that is usually 1.5
>hours later because I've been flying to burst. I can cut
>them sooner. Are the real time transfered soundigs
>that important?
>
No not if the raw data looks good. The real time data is mostly there so
scientists can alternate between excited and depressed.
>Is the 15UTC sounding ALWAYS important? I'm pretty
>sure that the soundings you speak of are from Tian's
>first night and unfortunately I didn't stay out there and
>Taos didn't fly, so those guys weren't around to help
>him.

TAOS will be changing their operations to go later, but have a longer gap when
they go down for their battery change. I would say for these last few IOPS if
TAOS stays up until a little later than they have been, we should try to get
that sounding.
=======================================================================
Hello Tian-
Thank you for coming out and I hope that you are learning somethings about MAPR
and field work. Please go up to the meetings at the university if you have not
done so to meet the other participants, Chris Doran and the other profiling
groups. The briefings are mildly informative.
Some tasks for you in the remaining time there.
1. After Tim puts the tether data on the glass pc please plot the tether data
and send it back to NCAR. There is an option at the end of the program to do so.
The instructions are in the log book. Call me or James Pinto if you have a
problem.
2. It is crucial to check the SODAR for bad data. The bad data seems to come
about from low SNR in one channel and/or very high winds in more than one
channel. There are reset instructions on the sodar electronics box. Please check
this data during the start of the IOP and at several times during it. Check all
three components and leave one wind up all the time with the wind barbs plotted.
Perhaps you can help with the archiving too. The sigmas run under a separate
program (graphik diffusion I think).
3. Plot up the SABL data and watch performance. Be sure that the data is stored
after backup according to its tape name as the backup procedure always uses the
same name and not moving it to a subdirectory with tape name will cause an
overwrite and a need to repeat the plotting. There are instructions in a folder
by the SABL display.
4. Help Mike as much as you can by taking long shifts when possible as he is
over worked.
5. If there are problems with the launch of the sondes and data quality please
call Tim down at the tether site and ask for advice.
6. Keep an eye on MAPR, of course, and watch for when TAOS is in the beam. Ask
them to lower TAOS when there is continuous interference. When I was there,
lowering it by 100 m helped a lot. Also watch for clutter and you may want to
change the pulse coding to two when if the ground clutter is really bad. Talk to
Bill and or Mike if you think the current settings are not so good.
6. Take notes on the weather situation and instrument performance in the log.
Pass the log book to the next person (Erik) and help with the training. You may
want to post this information or tape it into the log book.
thanks and best regards-
Dave

addnl:
Alex grabbed me today and refined his request for
the mapr data that they would like. In particular,
he wants to oversample on the second test, so we
leave the xmit pulse at 100m, and set the gate width
as small as possible (here 12.5m)
We have never tested a 12.m gate width, so
don't be surprised if something funny seems to
happen - it would be related to the MAC
unit on piraq being switched that quickly.
Also, since the gate spacing is going to be so
fine, I would move the first gate up so
it is is in the region where we seem to
have been getting reasonable winds, say
600m. Otherwise most of their data will be
in that suspicious 100m-400m region.
One other thing - Alex requested that pulse coding
be turned off for this data - i.e. code = 1

Because there is a pretty solid line in the signal plots
at about the halfway point I have changed the PW to 50m and
the number of gates to 40. This should put the line at 1
km if it is related to the fact that the gates are split
in processing. SABL has a problem when it comes to 2 DSPs
in that they don't read exactly the same power level so they
produce some banding. The software written to the DSPs may
be perfect, but they might read a little dif and that makes
the line.
The change happened at about 20:15 and will change back in a

- 55: RADAR, Site vtmx, Wed 18-Oct-2000 07:04:59 GMT, MAPR Data backup, IOP6, start 0700 UTC

- 51: RADAR, Site vtmx, Wed 18-Oct-2000 01:46:42 GMT, Start time series collection for IOP6

- 49: DAILY, Site vtmx, Tue 17-Oct-2000 17:14:52 GMT, Flies
They are coming in with the door open. We seem to be
collecting many of them, but it is great fun taking the
vacuum cleaner and sucking them into it. Fun for the
whole family should yours be out here.
- 48: SABL, Site vtmx, Tue 17-Oct-2000 17:13:50 GMT, Changing tape and cleaning window, etc.
Changing tape, making copy, checking drip pan and cleaning window.
- 47: RADAR, Site vtmx, Tue 17-Oct-2000 17:10:16 GMT, End time series collection and return to vtmx mode, also do a backup
Ended vtmx2mode and time series collection, started just vtmx
because the signal and SNR plots are confusing. Want to check
signal level with extra amp in blue(3) channel.
Backup started 15:17 UTC 17 Oct 00
It appears as though the lower gates are getting shifted to
middle of the screen. Symetric spurs are in the middle gates.
Called Charlie and emailed Bill.
- 45: SOFTWARE, Site vtmx, Tue 17-Oct-2000 12:24:42 GMT, GLASS and the surface station data
It appears as though the GLASS software gets the same surface
station data for every flight from the first one done. I think it
is a problem with a buffer in the networked drive. It was
first encounted during SCSMEX on the Murai when the surface
station laptops looked to the work station for GPS time? The
solution was to copy the desired file onto the laptop and access
it there. I don't know why this works...
- 43: RADAR, Site vtmx, Tue 17-Oct-2000 11:23:20 GMT, MAPR Data backup, IOP5, end 0900 UTC
Data backup of IOP5, first tape, tape ends 0900UTC, also cleaned the
exabyte tape drive.
- 42: IMPORTANT IMPORTANT, Site vtmx, Tue 17-Oct-2000 10:40:20 GMT, Important infor about soundings! Flights tonight at taking both the yagi and omni.
The balloon flights seem to be just going straight over
head for a period of time and the need to switch to Omni
for a short period of the flight is an absolute
necessity and as the balloon gets into the jet the need
to switch back to the yagi is also important.
- 41: SABL, Site vtmx, Tue 17-Oct-2000 10:10:15 GMT, "Lazer" Weak
SABL lazer got really weak. It appears to be a temperature
problem. I added coolant (1/2 glyc, 1/2 h20) and cranked the AC and
that fixed things.
