Quick-Look Images: System Requirements

It was felt that the easiest way to make S-Pol image information most widely available was as a series of fairly standard HTML pages, interpretable by common browsers and their default helper applications. This does not mean that any browser will actually work. The browser must be able to accept JavaScript, and should have a good MPEG viewer available as a plug-in.

It was further decided to provide images on CD, since Internet bandwidth is still generally not great enough to avoid sluggish loading of data.

Viewing large images like those provided here can be I/O and graphics intensive. You need a capable computer to avoid frustration!

Recommendations include:

• Display with screen size of at least 1024x768 pixels
• Good graphics card (4 Mb or more of graphics memory for a PC system)
• CPU with speed of 200 MHz or more (if a PC; otherwise a workstation such as Sun or HP with speed of 140 MHz or better)
• CD-ROM drive with 12x speed or better.
• CD-ROM drive capable of reading CD-R media (note that many drives manufactured prior to 1997 will not reliably read CD-R)
• MPEG viewer that will handle image sizes as large as 768x384 pixels (Microsoft ActiveX plugins will not handle images of this size; both Netscape and Internet Explorer browsers typically us the ActiveX software as the default MPEG interpreter on Windows-based systems)
• Either Netscape or Internet Explorer browser, with a revision that was current at the beginning of 1999; other browsers might work, but were not tested.

The pages included here were tested under the following configurations of operating system and browser. Other combinations may also work. It is anticipated that newer versions of operating systems and browsers will be backward-compatible for the near future. None of this information constitutes an endorsement of a system or product.

The GIF images and MPEG files may be reviewed independent of the HTML page framework. For GIF review, a large collection of commercial image software may be used. For MPEG files, there are a number of reliable interpreters, depending upon your operating system.
