Jeff ------- Date: Mon, 29 Apr 2002 17:05:45 MDT From: Richard Friesen <dick at raf.atd.ucar.edu> Subject: IDEAS flight status All: There will be a weather briefing/update for the IDEAS project at 9:30 am tomorrow, April 30, at Jeffco. T here is a flight tentatively scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, with a 12:30 takeoff. This is dependent on weather and instrument readiness issues. The plan is to go to New Mexico doing some low level work on the way and spend about 45 minutes on site at Socorro at 21 K' for remote sensing work. On the way back we will look for wave clouds or other opportunities. Pitch maneuvers will be conducted if conditions allow. You can attend the briefing or call Shannon Aguilar (X1030) or Jeff Stith (X1032) to find out the status of the flight after the briefing. -- Dick Friesen NCAR/ATD/RAF P.O. Allen ------- Date: Wed, 17 Apr 2002 13:44:49 MDT From: Richard Friesen <dick at raf.atd.ucar.edu> Subject: IDEAS status - Thursday flight possible All: At the IDEAS briefing/science meeting this morning the possibility of a shorter flight (2-3 hours) on Thursday, 18 April, with a take off time of 12:30 was discussed. Jeff Stith will have a weather briefing at 9:30 at Jeffco after which a final decision will be made along with flight plans. Anticipate that we will fly and that there will be no boundary layer flux legs or Pawnee grasslands runs. There is potential for wave clouds and/or convective clouds which would probably be the focus of the shortened flight. No Asian dust. Check with the RAF receptionist, Jeff, Allen or me to confirm around 10 am. We will start with the roster from last flight with some deletions and additions. Boynton, Ringleman, Cusack, Rogers, Stith, Cox, Twohy, Stephens, Tschudi, Jensen (or Beaton), Dye, Roberts, RAF ADS tech, Heymsfield (or stand in), 3 CU (Toohey or Avallone plus 2 students). Note that Campos will not be on the flight and we need to hear from Don Lukens at Wyoming. Stith may have two visitors who will want to go. Please send updates to this list to me and Allen (schanot at ucar.edu). -- Dick Friesen NCAR/ATD/RAF P.O. The take off time is scheduled for 11:30 am local time. If you are going on the flight you should be at Jeffco one hour before departure. Their will be a perflight briefing/planning meeting at 9:30 am at Jeffco in the conference room. We discussed briefly flight plans at this mornings meeting. If you have input you may send it to Jeff Stith (stith at ucar.edu) or discuss at the briefing. There is a possibility of some Asian dust showing up in the area on Friday. Those who have not flown on the C-130 during IDEAS or have not had a safety briefing make sure you are at Jeffco not later than hour before and identify yourself to Allen Schanot or Dick Friesen for a briefing. The C-130 will be available all day Thursday (8:00am to 5:00pm) for instrumentation work. Please make sure all is ready to go Friday morning and rack log books are up to date. There wil be NO sitting, standing or loitering on the AIMR box while in the back of the aircraft. It is the approximately 4'x4' box that has red letters saying no sitting, standing ... Seriously, this is a pressure containment vessel that is made to hold up to differential pressure inside versus outside the C-130 but not to carry any loads. Here is the tentative crew list: Rogers, Cox, RAF ADS, Twohy, Korn, Stephens, Heymsfield, Stith, Toohey + 2 CU students, Campos, Jensen and/or Beaton, Tschudi, Don Lukens. Let us know if there are additions or deletions. We have 15 or 16 people and maybe one uncommitted seat at this time. -- Dick Friesen NCAR/ATD/RAF P.O. Please remember that a data review and planning meeting is scheduled for 0930 Wednesday at the JeffCO conference room. Please come prepared to discuss any data issues related to flight rf01. At the end of the meeting we will discuss the plans for the next flight which is scheduled for either Thursday or Friday of this week. The weather looks better (clouds) on Thursday, but there appears to be a chance to catch some Asian dust on Friday. A final decision on which day to fly will be made at the close of the Wednesday meeting. Take-off is scheduled for 11:30 am. All those going on the flight should be at Jeffco one hour before at 10:30. The proposed flight plan that is posted on the RAF/IDEAS website is still in place - it is the original and has not changed. The flight is scheduled to last about 5 hours. The passenger list for this flight is: Rogers, Twohy, Stephens, Jensen, Beaton, Avallone, Delia, Lukens, Cox, Tschudi, Stith, Spowart, RAF technician, Heymsfield (tentative). Power will be on at 8:00 am. Any equipment removed from racks or external pods will need to be back on and inspected an hour before the flight. -- Dick Friesen NCAR/ATD/RAF P.O. Flight conditions will be re-evaluated at that time. This pretty much cancels out the instrument test flight for today. The RAF would still like to hold the Safety briefing today at 1030 in the RAF conference room. With the airplane still here, we will conduct the onboard portion of the briefing today as well. Power will be on the aircraft all day and we urge everyone to continue with instrumentation testing. If we cannot complete the maintenance flight today, we will repeat today's flight schedule for tomorrow. Allen ------- Date: Mon, 01 Apr 2002 16:57:02 MST From: Richard Friesen <dick at raf.atd.ucar.edu> Subject: IDEAS test flight schedule All: Tomorrow, Tuesday 4/2, a short (1 to 2 hour) check-out test flight for IDEAS is scheduled for a take-off at 2:00 pm. There will be a safety briefing in RAF conference room at 10:30 for those needing it (if you haven't flown on the C-130 before or if it has been a while, you need it). There will be a maintenance test flight early Tuesday. This flight is weather dependent and can only be flown in VFR conditions. If we can't get the maintenance flight off the research test flight will have to be slipped. As of Monday afternoon, 4/1, the seating for the test flight is as follows: Avallone, Beaton, Cox, Dye, Heymsfield (+1 MMM person), Irwin, Jensen, Korn, Lukens, Rogers, Stith, Stephens, Toohey, Tschudi, Twohy.
