NOTES
Duane and Gary came out to Shawnee. We determined that ice ingestion into the carburetor caused the engine/RPM surge. Performed engine run and engine ran normally. Took off and circled above runway. Engine appeared normal, so preceded back to Norman. The flight to Norman was uneventful.
Weather
- Line of storms formed east of Norman on the east/northeast side of an upper level low and later became severe
- Storms went on to produce tornadoes after T-28 penetrated the most southern storm.
- 3 to 4 close lightning flashes
- Last storm penetrated was very strong.
o Encountered severe turbulence, strong updraft and heavy precipitation / hail
- Surprising little ice accumulation.
Maintenance
- Oil temperature climbed to approximately 100 C on climb out. Decreased 20 - 30 C while in cloud.
- Video outer plexiglass cover cracked by hail at 185535
- Padding on some of the safety wires near the cylinder heads was eroded from hail as well as the caulking around the hail sensor
- Top heater element of HVPS heavily eroded from precip/hail.
- New metal melted off of right elevator trailing edge from lightning strike
- RPM and engine surge apparently caused by ice/water ingestion into the carburetor
o Charlie S. recommends keeping carburetor heat on or applying carburetor heat if engine surging encountered
Operations
- Radio communications were occasionally scratchy and unreadable from ops
- Was able to proceed independently during periods when radio communications were not possible
