INDOEX Logistic Bulletin: Computer Support at the Operations Center

Network

The INDOEX network will be based in the Meteorology Department compound on Hulule. The primary Internet connection will be a 64 kilobit per second link. Within the compound will be a LAN composed of a combination of 10 megabit per second and 100 megabit per second Ethernet, with standard RJ-45 twisted pair connectors. The standard connection provided to INDOEX participants will be 10baseT. Participants requiring 10base2 (ThinNet) or 100baseT (which will be in limited supply) should contact JOSS to make special arrangements.

A wireless 2 megabit per second Ethernet link will connect the Met. Department with the Air Maldives hangar. Within the hangar will be 10baseT.

The supported network protocol family will be TCP/IP. All IP addresses will be assigned to computers as they arrive on Hulule. IP addresses and DNS names will be assigned on a first-come first-served basis onsite only.

Due to the modest bandwidth of the Internet connection, a very limited amount of traffic will be permitted over this link. A network firewall will be configured that will allow only pre-authorized connections to traverse the link. (To enable connections from the Maldivian ISP, connections from the ".mv" domain will be permitted.) The highest priorities will be given to data critical for the INDOEX mission, via LDM and FTP protocols, and to e-mail. The size of e-mail messages will be limited to one megabyte. Interactive login sessions will not be permitted except in special circumstances after coordination with the JOSS network administrator.

Telephones

Local telephone service is available in the Maldives, and telephones will be provided within the Meteorology Department complex. For international calls, a phone card can be purchased that will permit calls to be made from a public phone at the best possible rate.

The Maldivian cellular phone system has reached its full capacity, so participants who bring their own phones are unlikely to be able to use them.

Services

JOSS will provide DNS, IMAP, and POP servers. Any INDOEX participant may request an account for e-mail purposes on a public-access host. Account names will be assigned on a first-come first-served basis. E-mail clients such as Netscape, Outlook, Pine, and Eudora will be capable of retrieving e-mail via IMAP or POP, or participants may log directly into the mail host and run Pine.

Power

Participants are reminded that electrical power in the Maldives is nominally 240 volts, 50 Hz, and are advised to bring equipment that can handle that power. Additionally, the power is not very stable, so it is recommended that participants bring Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPSes).
