Dear IHOP_2002 Participants

An ad-hoc IHOP Project Office was formed earlier last week to get started on the logistics for IHOP_2002. The group draws expertise from NCAR/ATD (Dave Parsons, Tammy Weckwerth, Brigitte Baeuerle), UCAR/JOSS (Steve Williams, Dick Dirks, Jose Meitin) and NOAA/NSSL (Erik Rasmussen). We hope to set up a more formal IHOP Project Office once we get closer to the project.

During the meeting, several tasks were identified. First, we would like to have our next planning meeting during the 3rd week of April in Boulder. Please comment on your availability. The second task was to begin drafting the preliminary IHOP_2002 Operations Plan in order to have a rough draft for the upcoming meeting. To prepare this document, we ask that you to sign up with one or more of the following working groups via email to baeuerle@ucar.edu:

  1. ABL Studies
  2. Convective Initiation
  3. QPF
  4. Instrumentation

We will set up separate email aliases for each working group and also post an electronic document on the web site below that will allow you to contribute to the Operations Plan. The IHOP Scientific Overview Document in PDF and WORD format is also available from this site.

We are pleased to say that we submitted an advance reservation request for almost all of the facilities within the NSF Deployment pool. The OFAP panel will meet on 9-11 April to recommend whether IHOP_2002 will get an advance reservation. The facility requests can also be found on the web site mentioned above.

We also have news regarding the transfer of the ELDORA airborne radar from the NSF/NCAR Electra to a new platform. NSF has signed an agreement with NRL two weeks ago to use one of their P-3s to support ELDORA. It now seems most likely that ATD will take the Electra out of service. Actual installation of ELDORA on a P-3 could happen as early as August 2001 or as late as October of this year. There is a good chance that IHOP will be the first project to put this new working relationship to test. We are confident that ATD staff will do their best to provide many of the same services and instrumentation on the P-3 that we now provide on the Electra.

I look forward to working with you.
