FIRST GAPP DATA MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE (DMC) MEETING
(Bolger Center, Potomac, MD, 2 May 2001)
Attendees:
Ben Felzer
Roy Jenne
Alan Robock
Dan Tarpley
Steve Williams
Kell Wilson (representing Tilden Meyers)
Meeting Summary:
This meeting was very informal and led to some good discussion regarding the transition
from GCIP to GAPP. Since the GAPP Implementation Plan is still being drafted, it was
difficult to do any specific planning on GAPP data set issues until the data requirements have
been determined. However, the following items were discussed:
- GCIP Legacy Data Sets - A few months back, Rick Lawford sent out an e-mail requesting
nominations for "Legacy" or heritage data sets for GCIP. The following list was compiled
from suggestions and discussions at the GAPP PIs meeting:
- Princeton Radar derived precipitation [1996-2000] (Jim Smith)
- U of Maryland Satellite derived radiation [1996-2000] (Rachel Pinker)
- U of Maryland Satellite derived snow cover [1996-2000] (Rachel Pinker)
- EROS Vegetation maps (Kevin Gallo)
- NCEP hourly gauge and Stage IV precipitation [1997-2000] (Ken Mitchell)
- Rutgers composite soil moisture (Alan Robock)
- Arizona global 8 km fractional vegetation and land cover type [1982-1993] (Xubin Zeng)
Discussion centered on what was the definition of a Legacy data set, it's length of time and
whether it had to cover the entire GCIP period. Consensus was that a "definition" should be
provided to help identify potential candidates. Also, since these data sets will obviously not
fit on a CD-ROM or reasonable size set, some plan must be devised to handle them.
- UCAR/JOSS will create a WWW page for the GAPP Data Management Committee. It will
be located at: http://www.joss.ucar.edu/gapp/daman/.
An e-mail alias will also be created for easy communication between the members
(gapp-dmc@joss.ucar.edu).
An announcement will be sent when these are active. It was thought that because of the time and cost, our meetings
should be scheduled only when absolutely necessary. Most document preparation, review, and
information distribution could be accomplished by the use of this WWW site and e-mail alias.
- 3) The GAPP Implementation Plan is in preparation. We have been asked to begin work on a
GAPP Data Management Plan in parallel, and hope to have a draft version by Autumn 2001.
It is possible that our next scheduled meeting could be a workshop to finalize this document
late in CY2001. To begin this document process, copies of the GCIP Implementation Plan
(volumes 1 and 3) that deal with data will be sent to you in the mail. In case you don't
already have copies, they might be useful as a guide. The intent is to create a "living"
document that will exist on-line and updated as appropriate, rather than publish subsequent
additional tactical data management plans in the future.
- 4) It was generally agreed that a satellite table providing data set details (similar to the one
created by the Satellite Module in GCIP) be updated and posted on the WWW. This table
should also include a chart of scheduled new satellite launches to be used in project planning.
We can add these tables to the new GAPP Data Management (DM) WWW pages located at:
http://www.joss.ucar.edu/gapp/
All DMC members are encouraged to take a look at these pages and offer any suggestions or
modifications. New links or additional data sets can easily be added. The remainder of the
meeting discussed additional data sets that would be useful to the GAPP community and will
be added to the GAPP Data Management Pages.
- 5) There is an updated GAPP data questionnaire (and responses) posted on the GAPP DM
WWW page. All GAPP PIs were asked to fill out and submit this questionnaire to assist us in
determining data requirements. All responses will be compiled and analyzed prior to the
drafting of the draft Data Management Plan.
- 6) No definite future meetings were scheduled. DMC members will be contacted as work
begins on the GAPP Data Management Plan.
