Proposal Title: Asian Aerosol Source Identification, Chemical Transformation
and Long Range Transport, Spring and Summer, 2001
Proposal Synopsis: SUMMARY WORK STATEMENT
Augment existing or establish new aerosol sampling sites for
continuous size and time resolved aerosol composition.
Pair sites in planetary boundary layer (PBL) and lower free
troposphere when possible (3 sites). Collect aerosols at 7
land and 1 ship-based sites using continuously rotating
DRUM samplers, 4 hr resolution (2 weeks per sample), in 8
size modes, and at 4 sites, in 3 size modes for 6 weeks , spring
2001. There will be a 4 weeks intensive, summer 2001, Cheju
and Japan. Analyze all for mass and optical parameters, and
selected (roughly 25%) samples for major/minor constituents
(PIXE/PESA), trace elements by synchrotron-XRF, organics by
LDITOF-MS spectroscopy and H surrogate mass. Collect aerosol
on IMPROVE equivalent IAS and IMPROVE samplers, with filters
for quality assurance purposes, PM2.5, and analyze for mass,
major and trace elements, soot, anions/cations, organics by
TOR and GC/MS. Collect aerosol by Hi-Vol filters at Cheju,
Korea (Kosan and Cheju high site), and potentially one other
site. Analyze by size for S and O isotopic analyses.
Evaluate aerosol sources and sinks, transport, transformations
(esp. modification of dust by anthropogenic species), trace
elements associations to known industry, modification by
oceanic transport, using trajectory analysis, statistical
analysis (PCA) and remote sensing (satellite) data.
