Proposal Title: Measurements of aerosol optical properties on board the NCAR
C130 aircraft during ACE-Asia
Proposal Synopsis: The focus of the ACE-Asia campaign is to characterize regional emissions, transport, and evolution of aerosol properties from East Asia as they relate to aerosol radiative forcing. As part of this campaign the researchers propose to perform direct measurements of aerosol optical properties on the C130 aircraft. The instrument package includes measurements of the aerosol light scattering coefficient as a function of scattering angle, wavelength, size and relative humidity, as well as the aerosol absorption coefficient at one wavelength. These measurements will allow them to calculate vertical profiles of aerosol extinction (aerosol optical depth), single scattering albedo, backscattering fraction and aerosol hygroscopic growth, all critical parameters to determining direct aerosol radiative forcing. These measurements will be combined with those of other research groups of aerosol size, aerosol composition and solar radiance to perform closure calculations and test climate model predictive capabilities.
