A large range of particle sizes is covered by the RAF instruments. Generally speaking, instruments that detect smaller particles have smaller volume sample rates. Calibration standards are based on monodisperse spheres of known composition and refractive index, i.e., glass beads and polystyrene latex (PSL) spheres. The spinning disk is a CD-size platter with 50, 125, 250 and 500 µm circular spots. Currently, PSL and glass beads are used for calibrations at RAF. Future plans will include monodisperse particles generated with VOAG and DMA (differential mobility analyzer).
