Slant-Vertical Profiles during Descent
It is important to remember that these are not vertical profiles. The airplane descends and climbs along a 3% slope.
The in-cloud portion of the 600 m vertical descent covers about 14 km horizontally,
and the in-cloud part of the ascent covers 10 km. Therefore, these profiles do not represent the vertical
structure of the clouds. Comparing the adiabatic and measured LWC would be misleading. From a large number of
such slant profiles, however, you could calculate estimates of the mean or
ensemble vertical structure of the cloud system.
