04 Mar 00:45Z (03 Mar 17:45 LT)

Found side pointing toward 230 degrees to be 2 mm low (ie. level).
Found side pointing toward 140 degrees to be 5 mm low from a 1.5m level.
This is level within 0.2 degrees. (Good job leveling Bill!)

This should be re-checked by Mike, Lou.

COMMENTS (data quality, unusual meteorological features, launch problems, etc.)
--------

This is a test to see if we can receive a sonde transmitting from the gondola.
The idea to instrument the goldola next year. Note that we do not have GPS at
all (not important for test?).

Lost sonde while they were driving over to the ski area. Acquired again.

10-second data is "frozen". Maybe it thought there was a burst and so it gives
up. The raw data is still good.

Spotty signal at base (about 780 mb). Then good signal until (maybe) flat spot
in hill (751-747 mb). Then good to top, about 715 mb.
See data file C:\Glassdat\D200103032058.map for ascii listing.

COMMENTS (data quality, unusual meteorological features, launch problems, etc.)
--------

This was a launch mainly for the National Geographic camera crew. Note
that surface met was not working. Also terminated early for another test.

Very well tracked by MAPR, to 2km in light winds. Glass PC clock is
8 seconds ahead of ISS clock

03 Mar 16:15 Z (09:15 LT) Solar sensors are clear of frost this morning.

Sureface data stopped working at about 16:45Z (11:45 LT). Havn't worked on
fixing it because of visitors and end of project. We should diagnose
before teardown.

26 Feb:

MAPR in correlation only mode through the night, and continuing.
Signals are weak. Antenna and RASS are free of snow, but its cool and dry.
.
Changed to time-series collection at 20:15Z (13:15 LT). Clouds aloft appear
to be descending. We don't expect snow until late tonight/early tomorrow,
but let's get some time series of the precipitating cloud.

MAPR PC locked up at 21:00 just when RASS started. Other activities were,
running in time-series mode, doing a tape backup. Restarted in time series
mode at 21:07 (also restarted tape backup). RASS stayed on for a couple of
minutes after restarting. Note: forgot to change directory to /data/mapr.
Stopped, moved data files to that directory, and restarted properly at 21:27Z.

131: DAILY, Site Steamboat, Mon 26-Feb-2001 16:36:32 GMT, Weather today 26 Feb
26 Feb: Dry overnight. Bright with high overcast (Cirrus) this morning. High
clouds most of the day, lowering by mid-afternoon but not low enough.
Maybe tomorrow.

There is alot of dirt showing under the ice. I have dug a channel to
divert a pool of water away from the transmitter. Next year, if possible,
we should put the TX up on blocks.

Good flight. Lost GPS lock at launch and didn't recover until 2110 m MSL

Launched 5 min early to track before RASS began (but lost lock...).
For the record, GLASS PC clock 6 seconds ahead of ISS time

96: REMINDERS, Site Steamboat, Tue 20-Feb-2001 19:02:21 GMT, Notes for system changes/upgrades
Using this entry to list things which could be improved. Most are minor.

When RASS begins, ramp the volume over 3-seconds (Charlie has this on his list).

GLASS realtime software: for one sounding the 10-second data was just plain wrong. Altitude got stuck at 2225m. Pressure and all else in the RAW data looked ok.

GLASS realtime software. The U and V of the RAW data have the wrong sign (U and V are positive with flow towards the East and North). The 10-second data, including direction, were correct. The Zeb display was also correct. Ned notes that it is Vaisala who uses the (wrong) convention of U,V being FROM East,North.

GLASS software: The realtime T display doesn't show temperatures below -50C, so we can't locate the tropopause height. This would be useful information in realtime for some projects.

MAPR PC hung. Noted because the clock stopped, other pc could not access contour plot web page. Before crash it was running windrasstms, doing a backup tape, and running Bill's plot_latest_sounding.csh. (did this twice now).

On Bill's sounding plots it would be nice to have wind speed and direction in addition to the U,V which are there.

Zeb radiation plot: The axis labels are good, but the legend labels are misleading.

On all plots of sounding data, when is RH from saturation with respect to water and when with respect to ice?

MAPR: We need a RASS temperature display (web or zeb)

MAPR: could use a raw voltage output for the scope to examine clutter, etc.
(Mike says this must be done by Charlie after the signal is digitized and
mixed to baseband.).

GLASS: During the initialization, is the surface met that I accept used as the
grounding point for the data? If so, it can be a long time (15 min or more)
from the actual launch time. [Mike says that is the data used; so could a
way to update this be added?].

General: Get a triple-piont table for trailer. Surface met says the
temperature is about -2 C, but the ice is melting. Is it because of the lowe
than STP standard pressure or because of salt or other contaminants?

Also, get an ice crystal habit diagram for trailer..

MAPR real-time display: power spectra sign convention is reversed (display only)
It seems downward are negative values (left of zero), but DBS displays show it
to be positive (right of zero). DBS displays the "radial velocity" with the
convention that it is positive towards the radar (down).

Zeb raingauge display: It is labeled as mm and each trip appears to be 0.1 mm.
But Bill said each trip is actually 0.1 inch?

Much sun in the afternoon.

Snowing lightly again by 10pm LT (05Z Feb 21).

The orange cone I placed in our driveway was swept into the snowbank by the plows. I guess they just didn't understand.

85: RADAR, Site Steamboat, Mon 19-Feb-2001 16:51:07 GMT, Modes for today (Feb-19), a crash, and some missing files
19 Feb:

Another intensive day: Changed to collect time series from
  16:05 Z (09:05 LT) through about 16:15 Z (09:15 LT) but

The backup failed overnight and the disk is nearly full so I have
stopped collecting time-series for now.

Restarted backup #39

I deleted these cor files to make room on disk. These should be times when there is also time-series data collected, so they are reproducable:

Also, profiler stopped once for unknown reason (disk space?). The mapr editor was displayed after it stopped. A second time MAPR did stop with a message of lack of disk space in the console.

Started time-series and correlation collection again at 19:05 (after backup was finished).

Also noted:
  Forward Power 124.19%
  VSWR 2.92:1

Cleared RASS speakers at 21:45 Z
Surface sensors are clear

Crash, bang: MAPR clock stood still in time at 3:48pm LT (22:48Z). I noticed this, and rebooted. Started data collection again at 23:19Z in windrasstms mode.

No clue's. MAPR was pretty busy at the time. Was running collecting time-series, also was doing a backup, and I had recently started to plot the latest sounding
(unfortunately, also had to restart the backup)

Stopped time-series mode at 20-Feb 02:05 Z (19-Feb 19:05 LT)

19 Feb: Snowing this morning. Most snow 8am to 12 noon (15-19Z).
About 7 inches total, and still lightly snowing at 22:50
Had 1 minute of small (3mm?) hail at 19:55Z

Launched 4 sondes today:
16:30, 17:57, 18:20, and 22:00 Z (09:30. 10:57, 11:20, and 15:00 LT). The third was because of problems with the second launch, but that data looks ok, too.

MAPR in time-series and correlation mode from: 19:05 Z (12:05 LT) - 02:05 (20-Feb)
Also for 10-minutes earlier, but that was stopped because of disk space limits.
Also note that MAPR pc crashed at 22:48Z for about 30 minutes before restart.

Ending IOP at 22:45 Still snowing at surface and in cloud at lab, but as Randy said:"We've characterized this storm pretty well."

I will continue to collect time series for a few more hours since it is snowing nicely.

Sounding mostly good. Lost lock once early. But during the flight the 10-second data was wrong. Altitude stuck at 2225m while raw data showed pressure decreasing normally. Also, in the RAW WIND data, U was eg. -30 when the winds were actually from the west. I suspect a sign error in the code.

COMMENTS (data quality, unusual meteorolical features, launch problems, etc.)
--------

Sounding requested by CSU's Bill Cotton and students who are visiting
the Storm Peak Lab, not for a snow sampling expt.
Conditions were fine at the lab.

Good flight, good gps lock. Sonde initially went straight up.
Had to pull paper tape thru several times.

Tracked by MAPR, GLASS PC clock 65 seconds fast.
Did extra RASS.

63: RADAR, Site Steamboat, Tue 13-Feb-2001 05:14:34 GMT, MAPR locked up - reboot
MAPR locked up again. Seemed to happen gradually.
Last data processed by FCA collected about 0320UT - this file started about
5 minutes late for some reason. Then brief periods of data collected
intermittently over next couple of hours.

About 9:20pm (0420UT), tried to log in from hotel, could connect to armiss,
but not to mapr.

Arrived at 10:03pm to find clock stuck at 9:59pm, and stuck in winds mode
(should have been in rass).
Did hard reset 10:10pm (0510UT) and restarted mapr process.
Restarted okay.

Oscilloscope showed piraq was still running (well still transmitting
and showing gate pulses) thru the stall, and reboot, until near end of
reboot process when it was reset.

/var/log/messages showed several messages over couple of hours before boot
"mapr kernel: stuck on TLB IPI wait (CPU#0)"

62: DAILY, Site , Tue 13-Feb-2001 01:17:23 GMT, weather today 12 Feb
12 Feb mainly fine, scattered cloud and mild.

Stream is still flowing, with surrounding pools forming.
Lifted up more cables out of the ice on to blocks (including fire wood)
and also tied to trailer. Some cables really stuck - have to hope
for a thaw. Dug out snow bank in front of trailer.
Cleaned snow off MAPR radome.

CSU class visited with Bill Cotton, gave them a tour, then they went
up to the Sotrm Peak Lab for a couple of days.
Showed Melanie how to look after the system (basically only change tapes)
for a few days while we are gone.

61: RADAR, Site Steamboat, Tue 13-Feb-2001 01:06:56 GMT, MAPR checks and tests
Various MAPR ops

Feb 13
0:15UT shutdown for several minutes to clear snow & ice from radome,
only a thin coating. No change in VSWR (2.7:1)

RASS TEST *********

1:00-1:05 RASS, acoustic source was DBS system
1:05-1:10 RASS, acoutic source was Charlie's card
matched output voltages - 15V AC on amp output
also matched temperature ranges -20C to +10C
Both sources gave clear RASS signal to 600m.
DBS perhaps slightly cleaner at 600m.

HIGH RESOLN TEST *********

1:10-1:15 Standard wind mode (100 m resoln)
1:15-1:20 High resoln wind mode (50m) first gate 200m
1:20-1:25 """"""""""""""""""""""""""" first gate 300m
1:25-1:30 """"""""""""""""""""""""""" first gate 200m
1:30- back to std winds mode
Difficult to tell if there was any change when the first gate changed
in high resoln mode - perhaps there was lifting up of an apparent
layer, but need more tests.

PULSE CODE TEST *********

1:45-1:50 Std winds mode - 4 bit code
1:50-1:55 1 bit code
1:55- 4 bit code
Signal reduced during 1 bit code by a few dB

57: DAILY, Site , Mon 12-Feb-2001 01:08:53 GMT, weather today 11 Feb - MAPR stream
11 Feb mainly fine, scattered low cloud and a little light snow.
Breezey at times. Last night about 1/2 inch of snow fell.
Carried out an IOP with 2 sondes, although the snow was a bit light.

This morning the lake had turned into an ice skating rink,
then later the dam broke. A drain hole opened up under the snowbank
and a stream ran from the carpark, under a snow gauge, and around the
end of the trailer.
Brought some firewood to lift cables out of the water, and zip-tied
others together and onto the trailer.

Lost some data when MAPR TX blanking came on early this morning for
some unexplained reason (see MAPR tklog entry), working ok now.

56: RADAR, Site Steamboat, Mon 12-Feb-2001 01:05:32 GMT, MAPR Antenna tilt
With the thaw of the snow under the antenna the last few days,
it has developed a tilt of about 0.6 degrees towards the southwest.

If there is a 10m/s wind to or from that direction, it will
leak into the vertical motion by about 0.1 m/s.
Will try to fix this.

51: RADAR, Site Steamboat, Sun 11-Feb-2001 17:45:33 GMT, MAPR - TX shutdown
The MAPR shutdown about 13UT (6am) - called Mike.
Eventually discovered that for some unknown reason the blanking at the
TX was on.
Pushed the RF CTL button on the TX (turning off the blanking light)
and it started working again - from about 1730 UT.

FO (power out on laptop) started out at 105-108% jumping around a little,
an hour or so later it was 116%, then later it settled at 124%.
Meter on TX was flucuating slightly at about 3/4 FSD, but later settled at FSD.
VSWR is 2.6

back to hourly RASS afterwards, (accidently had speakers unplugged 19UT run,
so did another run at 1907UT).

Around launch time there was light snow, however it cleared soon after.
Sounding showed inversion from about 500m to about 1km.
There is cloud/fog from about half way up mountain to
(according to Randy at the peak lab) just below the peaks.
Took photos of this fog at 11:30am.

Last night about 2 inchs of snow fell.

Can see sonde on MAPR 2 hour plots around launch.
Maybe able to use for height calibration, but note that GLASS PC clock
is running about 55 seconds fast.

Did some high resolution tests on MAPR 2215 - 2230.

pix and made up a site drawing. Also built a
snow woman. She's bald though.

Also shoveled, shoveled shoveled and checked the
sensors and fan. Borrowed a hand held temp/hum
and it agrees well with the surface station.

13: RADAR, Site Steamboat, Mon 05-Feb-2001 00:48:41 GMT, VSWR and RASS tests
Bill tested RASS and I tested vswr today. VSWR fine and
RASS is loud.
12: SURFACE, Site Steamboat, Sun 04-Feb-2001 18:28:05 GMT, Installed Pressure Sensor Feb 3, Sat
Installed the new pressure sensor in the tower.
Checked the campbell program and noted the change
in the dld file. Pressure came up as 800mb. Same
as w/o sensor. Noted this morning that the pressures
are changing now. Last 2 sondes read a couple of
mb below sensor (802 vs. 805 or 796 vs. 800). Will
have to watch to make sure of consistent difference.

copied the new campbell snow1.* files into the campbell directory
and made a new directory for the old files under
the campbell directory.

Kept a copy of the new snow1.* campbell files on the
glass pc.

Shakey winds at the beginning. Stopped sounding early to send the data
to Mtn top lab.

3: SURFACE, Site Steamboat, Sat 03-Feb-2001 01:48:24 GMT, Moved the Solar Sensor Stand
Because of a lighting tower shadowing the solar sensor
in the late afternoon the sensors were moved to the south
on the top of a large snow bank. This happened approx 4-5
pm local steamboat time.

The snowbank was flatended around the base of the solar
tower so snow will appear on the flat surface.
