Not much going on precip wise next 24 hours through 12 Z tomorrow.

Some high clouds around this evening (00 UTC, Feb 22).

The water vapor profile is quite interesting though. With a
very dry layer around 2 km and a moist layer coming in
around 3 UTC, Feb 22 between 2 and 3 km.


Low level winds shift from the north to SSE around 3 UTC. Strong
winds from the north aloft, with speeds of up to 32 m s-1 at 4 km.

Snow should be ending soon at NCAR site (snow stops reaching the surface
around 18 UTC, but continues to be around aloft until 3 UTC on Feb 21).
The snow is sublimating because the air below 2 km is drying out.
Lots of liquid cloud water around at mountain top until 21 UTC and light
snow continuing until 3 UTC, Feb 21 there.

Strong upward motions of almost 1 m s-1 at NCAR site 
below 2 km between 18 UTC and 7 UTC.

Winds at NCAR site are weak and variable at the surface and from the
West and NW aloft.

Run finished at 10:30 AM.



Two periods of snow are forecast today: one period of light snow 
from 12Z to 21 Z and a second period of heavier snow starting at 8 Z 
on the 20th. Both period are associated with liquid cloud with the 
first period having cloud tops of about 2 km. THe second liquid cloud 
is deeper with tops over 4 km.

Werner Mtn will experience periods of fog during both snow events. Heavy
riming is possible, particularly with the second event. Total accum for the
period 4-8 cm.

Vertical velocities are mostly upward below 2 km with values as large as 
0.8 m s-1.

Layer of southerly winds increasing in depth with time with westerly 
component above 1 km increasing with time.

Run finished at 10:30 AM.

Lots of cloud water and snow is forecasted for the next 24 hour period.
Heaviest snow beginning around 20 UTC with snow generating in
liquid cloud layer between 1.5 and 3 km. Lots of riming possible with
this snow event. Liquid cloud is forecasted at the surface of
Werner Mt Lab site for much of the next 24 hours. Storm totals of
10 cm at NCAR site to 25 cm on Mtn Werner with locally heavier 
amounts.

Vertical velocities are relatively weak over the NCAR site
except for a brief period between 06 and 09 UTC Feb 19.


Winds shift from NW to SW between 0.5 and 4 km around 23 UTC Feb18.

Run finished at 10:30 AM.



Lots of mid level cloud cover forecasted to be around today. Snow around too
beginning  around 18 UTC, but it sublimates before reaching the ground until
about 9 UTC Feb 18. At the same time, Mt Werner site starts to get
fogged in.

W is mainly upward in the lowest 1.5 km but less than 0.5 m s-1.


A period of strong SE winds forecasted below 1 km between 20 UTC
and 3 UTC on Feb 18. It would be interesting to see how deep this layer
turns out to be.  A sonde during the strong wind event might be useful if
MAPR does not see the top of  it.

An increase in qv, snow aloft  and moderate updrafts conicide with this 
hight wind event.

All is quite interesting.

Run finished at 10:30 AM.


Today's run shows lots of high cloud around with IWP of as much as 30 g 
m-2, but the snow is not forecasted to reach the surface.

Winds below 500 m are weak from the east. Winds aloft increasing with time
from the westnorthwest.

Water vapor shows some interesting vertical structure and temporal 
variations. Very dry aloft until 00 UTC Feb 17, followed by rapid
moistening and a layered appearance.

Might expect snow to begin sometime tomorrow morning as moistening 
continues to 12 UTC.

Again we see alternating layers of upward and downward vertical velocity 
with upward motion between 1 and 2.5 km. Below 1 km, there is mostly
downward motion.








137: Comms, Site Boulder, Sat 16-Feb-2002 21:42:40 MST, soap adjustment to help comms
I am suspicious that the load on the system from running IDL for SOAP is
part of the problem with dial-up communications, especially given the times
that comms failures have coincided with swap space exhaustion and excessive
numbers of IDL processes.  So on a hunch, on Friday while comms were up after
the latest reboot, I moved soap to run at 40 past the hour instead of on the
hour.  The hope is that soap runs will not interfere with dial-up and data
transfers, which happen at 5 past the hour.  Since that change the dial-up
has not failed, but that is hardly a record.  It could be a coincidence.

I asked Tian to remove the mini-tester from the serial link in case it was
too much load and causing some of the serial line signals to fail.  It did
not need to be there anyway.  The other tester does need to be there since it
is disconnecting the carrier detect between the two modems.  However, I doubt
this was really causing the current problems since in that case I doubt the
reboots would have fixed anything.

No snow or cloud is forecasted for the next 24 hours. Temperatures should
get above freezing today at NCAR site.

Winds are northeasterly aloft (above 500 m) gradually shifting to southwesterly
and weakening with time. Below 500 m, wids are mostly from the SE except
for a brief period around 21 - 23 UTC Feb 15 when winds are from the NE.

A layer of weak upward motion persists between 1-2 km, but 
reaching the surface at times.

Run finished at 10 AM.


Heavy Snow forecasted for this morning! The largest snow
and liquid water paths I've seen yet, 400 and 800 g m-2 respectively.
Heaviest snow between 14 and 19 UTC, tapering off by 03 UTC Feb 15.
Lots of cloud water at surface on Mt Werner at -10 C until 21 UTC.

Snow accumulations (rtot) vary between 6-12 cm depending on elevation.

Qv decreasing with time (see graphics file). Note hint of dry layer
around 6 km at 18 UTC (A dry layer between 6-8 km in sounding 
was reported by Tian). Another moist layer evident between 2.5
and 4 km after 06 UTC.

Winds decreasing with time and shifting from westerly to a deep 
layer of weak northeasterlies after 00 UTC Feb 15. 

Would be interesting to see soundings at
23 UTC and 02 UTC to compare with MAPR during this wind shift.

Strong upward vertical velocities modeled above 1.5 km 
over NCAR site between 12 and 20 UTC.

Run finished at 11 AM.

Next storm to begin influencing Steamboat area around 12 Feb 14
as cloud and snow begin to move in then.

The boundary layer dries out over the next 20 hours. Above 1.5 km
the profile moistens with time beginning around 5 UTC . 

Shallow layer of northeasterlies below 500 m shifts to SE after 5 UTC.

Strong upward motion of almost 1 m s-1 associated with moistening
above 1.5 km.

132: MM5, Site , Fri 08-Feb-2002 11:29:11 MST, 08 Feb 2002 Run
Run finished at 11 AM.

Output shows snow showers on and off throughout the 24 hour
period ending 12 UTC on Feb 9. Lots of cloud water around with
the lab being fogged in on and off beginning around 18 UTC 
Feb 8. Locally up to 18 cm of snow forecasted (rtot) in the mtns, much
less (2-4 cm) in Steamboat.

Qv again interesting today with moist layer in place between
17 and 23 UTC. I wonder if sonde at 16 Z will be moist or dry.
Would be interesting to compare with another
sounding taken at 18 or 19 UTC.

Strong winds down to the surface. Wind shift takes place around 21 UTC
from southwesterly to northwesterly.

Vertical velocity also interesting with extended period of
upward motion preceeded by two strong updrafts at 18 and
21 UTC.

Run completed at 10:30 AM. Once again, no snow is forecast for 
24 hour period. Interesting evolving structure in qv might be
worth a sonde launch between now (00 Z) and 06 Z to see if this pans out.

Due to lack of interesting weather I decided not to run the
model last night as I am trying to catch up on recovering
disk space. Turns out I can only fit output from 3 runs on
a CD.

I saved the input data so we can run at a later time if 
needed.

clouds around today and some snow but the model
doesn't allow any to reach the ground at the NCAR site, while
a little does reach the ground up at the lab around 0 Z on the 5th.

looks like a deep front passes through this evening with winds shifting
from westerly to easterly over a deep layer around 04 Z feb 5. Wind
shift is preceeded briefly by a deep layer of upward motion.

No snow or cloud forecasted for the next 24 hours.

Winds shift from NW to SW between 0 and 3 km AGL
around 00 UTC on Feb 4. Easterly winds again show up below
700 m. Overall winds are light.

Vert. vel. are weak also, but an extended period of downward motion
is forecast below 700 m between 18 and 00 UTC.

Hi All, Todays run is on the web. I found a new more reliable source
for input data that is available earlier in the day thanks to help from the
folks from NCEP.

Today's run not too interesting with only some high cirrus passing over head
in the afternoon.

Vertical velocities are mostly downward below 1 km. Winds are rather light
from the east below 700 m and west aloft.

and this morning so no runs have been made. Will
try again tonight.

Addendum: The input files were finally obtained this
afternoon and stored in realtime/20020201/eta* so a

Late run again caused by late availability of model inputs.

Simulation shows a brief period of some light snow possible late this
afternoon (00Z feb 1).

Winds near surface below 300 m are light and variable with
periods when wind shifts from easterly to westerly. Above 1 km
winds shift from NE to WNW and then west by the end of the run.


Note: vectors only indicate wind direction. The variations in
length are meaningless as speed is color coded.

MM5 output now available for today. Late start due to late availability
of the model input data.

Forecasted winds are very interesting today with lots of directional and
speed shear. Vertical velocities are small  ( < 20 cm s-1) and mostly
positive until the end of the period when some stronger upward motion is 
forecast near the surface.

Clouds to dissipate and snow to end around 22 UTC at NCAR site. Liquid
water around during first 6 hours of the forecast period at the Lab.

Model run completed at 11 AM MDT. It shows a good amount of snow
through the 24 hour period ending 12Z on Jan 30, with snow becoming
lighter after 06Z on the 30th. Not alot of cloud water around but
enough that there could be intermittent riming events. I 
wonder if they are observing much at the lab. 

Winds switch from northeasterly below 500 m AGL to southwesterly above
1 km and are fairly strong aloft. Vertical velocity over NCAR site is
upward at 10-30 cm s-1 through about 03Z, then subsidence begins
to take over.Predicted snowfall at the NCAR site from 00Z Jan 29 to
12 Z Jan 30 is 6 mm liq equiv (RTOT) or about 6-10 cm of snow. Locally
as much as 20 cm of snow are possible in preferred locations.

Copied the Gsonde data to 1299 computer and the JAZ disk on the table. Probably a backup disk. It is also on the original computer.

WEATHER:
Cloudy early, but no snow over night. Calm in town, but heard tell of the winds being high up on the mountain. Looking at MAPR shows some gravity waves. Looked to have started up at 1700 UTC and still happening at 2300UTC, but look to be subsiding.

MAPR working fine today. It is seeing an interesting layer. Seeing some gravity waves. See comment earlier.

HPA is showing 72 % power, which is reasonable and the voltage is 1.417vdc at 2325 UTC the 27th. I'm going to send off the power percentage monitoring program to KALMUS.

Snow tappers off this morning but redevelops late this afternoon 
starting around 23 UTC, Feb 24.
Snow will be light for the most part, but some riming can be expected 
with LWPs as high as 350 g m-2. Riming period and snow ends around 9 UTC, Feb 24 as the profile dries out.
Werner Mtn will be in and out of the clouds next 24 hours so they should 
be able to capture the riming event with snow fall totals of 4-8 cm.

Vertical velocities between 0.5 and 1.5 m s-1 throughout most of period 
below 4 km, with maximum updrafts around 3 UTC.

Winds predominantly from the west and increasing with time with max 
winds at the end of the 24 hour period. 


#OBSV:
Through the noon hour local time here the mountain got very clear. Broken clouds throughout the area. Probably 60% coverage. 

Snow seemed to start at 2300 UTC at the top of the mountain and seemed to start down here not long afterwards.

HPA is showing 50 % power, which is reasonable. Voltage is 1.254. What does it all mean? It needs some thorough testing when it returns home and maybe off to Kalmus.

Working fine. 41.5 percent full. Seems to correspond well with the mapr returns.

GONDOLA SONDE:
Voltage at 12.0 this morning and  this evening. Raw cloud voltage was down to 3.1 during storm and now up to 4.

Today's forecast: DRY!

Some high cirrus clouds around today otherwise nothing to speak of
clouds/pcp-wise.

Over NCAR site:
Persistent layer of upward motion (0.1-0.5 cm s-1) between 700 m - 1500
m, and
sometimes extending over 4 km.

Low level winds are weak and variable from SE to NE until late in the
period when they become more southerly as deep layer of southwesterlies
moves in.

Moist layer originating at 2 km finds its way downward to the surface
around 00 UTC, Feb 23.

NWS say next chance for SNOW: Tomorrow Night through Sunday.

#OBSV:
High Heavy cirrus layer. Darker bluish to the north. MAPR says winds light <5m/s to 2 km and >20m/s above and from easterly.

Working fine today. Some layers shown, but not obvious from looking at the sky. Starting to see the high cloud layer, but it must be up near 4 km which is maprs limit currently. MM5 says dry today and MAPR not see shite.

HPA is showing no powr percentage. I hate their interface! Not a lot of signal coming out, but I do see power on the spectrum analyzer. It is becoming more and more necessary to develop our own interface from a power meter and volt meter. Measured power supply voltage on red and black tabs from back of power supply and get .836 vdc... 

1299:
Working fine. Doesn't seem to see the layers as well as MAPR. 38.9 percent full.Not seeing shite. MM5 jameson says dry today and maybe that is why.

Voltage at 12.7 this morning and  this evening. Raw cloud voltage is

Hi All,

Sorry for the late start. Today's forecast is now available.

Not much going on precip wise next 24 hours through 12 Z tomorrow.

Some high clouds around this evening (00 UTC, Feb 22).

The water vapor profile is quite interesting though. With a
very dry layer around 2 km and a moist layer coming in
around 3 UTC, Feb 22 between 2 and 3 km.


Low level winds shift from the north to SSE around 3 UTC. Strong
winds from the north aloft, with speeds of up to 32 m s-1 at 4 km.

Observations:
The day has been clear all day. There could be some type of layer as
the profilers seem to show. To the west there is some high cirus clouds,
and SPL is completely clear. 

Not in the MM5 is the fact that we'd be buzzed by a F16 at 2200

Snowing in the morning, and the visibility is low, couldn't see moutains.
snow stops at 1725 and becomes partly cloudy and sunny in the late
afternoon. The visibility is better in the afternoon.

Last night low is -7C at 0615 and stead increase till now.
High today is -0.1C. 
MM5 show heavy riming today. 

MAPR:
Good signals. Blanked HPA at 19:20ut and cleared snow from the top of antenna.
MAPR winds seem to be steady out of the E-NE for the last 24 hrs.
Changed and labeled tapes.Light green. 

1299:
Working well. Cleared snow from the antenna and shut it down about 1830. Had
10 inches of snow on the radome. Seeing layers of clouds currently.

GONDOLA SONDE:
Voltage at 12.5 this morning and  this evening. Raw cloud voltage is 
2.8 V flat, report to Doug.@ 1755 ut voltage heading up to 4v, temp incr too.
Cloud heavy and looks to be hanging just below gondola midpoint. 20:00ut Gondola midpoint visible and RAW CV up above 4v. Temp near 0 at bottom and near -5c near top. Interesting wave int he temp while coming down on the last trip about 20:33ut. 2 jumps in temp over a 10 mb stretch. Gone during the trip up. BV 12.8.

SOUNDING:
Down to 7 sondes, so reducing the frequency. Snow event whimpy so stopping for a few hours at 1800 utc. Only launched one today.

#MM5 Says snow stops reaching the surface at 1800utc and is correct, maybe slightly late. Clouds breaking up in the valley, but there is still about 90% coverage and clouds definitely over SPL. Snow flurries in and out along with heavier cloud coverage. Layers are thin. 0000, 50% cloud cover for the valley, but edges of the valley are covered extensively by clouds, including SPL.   

#only got 7 sondes and 4 bottles of helium left, may be able to fix 2 other sondes and Bill may send 5 more sondes.
#Tian left, I hope Rabettears didn't treat him too poorly..

#### Added 1/2 gal of antifreeze to both Snow gauges. First Time this was
done during the experiment. I unplugged the cable from the snow gauges and 
plugged them back in and heard a series of beeps from both gauges.

Snowing in the morning, and the visibility is low, couldn't see moutains.
snow stops at 1825 and becomes partly cloudy and sunny in the late
afternoon. The visibility is better in the afternoon. 
however, mists on top of moutains. 
Last night low is -4.5C at 1430 and high today is -0.1C. 
MM5 show heavy riming today. 

MAPR:
Good signals and four sondes can be seen on MPAR, although they are not as 
clear as in clear air condition. 
MAPR winds shift from SW to NW smoothly from 1400 Feb 18 to
1400 Feb 19 above 1 km.
Cleaned exabyte drive 1.

1299:
Working well. Strong signals up to 2 ~ 2.5 km for most of the day. 

GONDOLA SONDE:
Voltage at 12.8 this morning and 13.0 this evening. Raw cloud voltage is 
1.8 V flat, report to Doug.

strong signals caused by snow. MAPR shows snow reaching surface for
several periods of time in the morning starting at 1040 UTC, while
the snow gauge shows fisrt tick at 1300.

Working well. In the morning, radial velocities increasing at 0.8~2 km
suggests some riming may occur. MM5 also show lots of riming process occur
in this event.

GONDOLA SONDE:
Voltage at 13.0 this morning and 12.9 this evening. No inversion was shown
in the morning.

3 sondes todays capturing the event well.

WEATHER:
Suuny and partly cloudy in the morning and become more cloudy in the
afternoon. An increase in IR with time was observed in the 
afternoon (>2000 UTC). High today is 4.9C at 00UTC and low last night 
is -18C at 0800 UTC. Surface winds are below 2 m/s for most of day.    
No precipitation at surface. MM5 shows mide-level cloud today. 


MAPR:
Hot air ballon was visualized at around 1620 but not shown clearly in 
MAPR plot. It is probably shadowed in the RASS period.
A layered structure with SNR at 0~-5 dB was observed at 2.5 km during
1720~1850, while the other altitudes with SNR only -15 dB.
A layered strcture at lower altitude of 1.5 km was developed after 1915
and exhibited wave appearance. Alternating updraft and downdraft with time
was shown at 2115~2200.Stong signal aloft at 3~4 km was shown after 2205,
which was also observed by 1299 at similar heights.
MM5 predicts snow aloft beginning at 1800 at similar heights.   


1299:
Working okay, strong signal at 3~4 km was shown after about 2226, the real
starting time should be earlier.

GONDOLA SONDE:
Voltage is at 13.4 this morning and is at 13.1 in the evening.
An inversion was shown in the morning with 2C at top, -8C at base, and
-11C at ISS.

at 0300.
Weak signals due to clear air condition, wind estimates are up to 1 km.

Good flight. The RH strcture is similar to flight #23 except the humidy
layer at 8.5km is dryer (32% at 8km). 
The wind speed is almost constant (9 m/s) from 2.5 to 4 km (MSL).
The wind direction varies a liitle between 250 and 300 degree throughtout
the entire flight.

WEATHER:
Snow observed at surface about 1300 UTC and RH jumps up abruptly at that time.
Snow and cloudy most of the day and the cloud broke up for a while in the
evening (0000 UTC). Snow stop for a period from 2100~2210 UTC and after
about 2350 UTC. It's pretty foggy on the Mt Werner for most of time.
Last night's low is -16C and today;s high is -2C.
Surface winds were light (<2m/s). 


MAPR:
Good signals for snow, with winds to 3.0 km. The front edge of snow strom
aloft was observed by MAPR at 0800 UTC. Snow near surface weren't observed
by MAPR until 1315UTC. MAPR winds aloft (>1.2 km) shows north easterly
wind and northerly wind after 0145. SNR dies down at 0210. 


1299:
Good signals due to snow. Spurs are still observed.


GONDOLA SONDE:
Voltage at 13.1 this morning, and also 13.1 this evening.
Works OK

SOUNDING:
8 sondes were launched. Two of them (#27 and 24) don't have reliable
wind estimations due to the loss of satelitte tracking.The RH drops out
sharply at 6Km and another layer with relativley high RH was observed
at 8K` km for the first few flights and dies down.

MISC:
#Clear radiation sensor at 1659,1915 ,and 0210 UTC.
#Clear the RASS speaker covers at 1925.
#COMM was up and down all day.
#Snowboard measurement was made at 0030 UTC,the depth of the snow is 9 cm
 and the density is 0.8cm/9cm. The snow gauge is 26 bars = 0.26*2.54=0.66cm.
#Randy said they got the best data today.
#Nice firework starts at 0206 on Mt. Werner.
#James MM5 predicts heavy snow (6-12 cm) at 1400~1900 UTC and tapering off
 by 0300 UTC, which are pretty accurate compared to iss data.
 MM5 also predicts the wind shifts from westerly to northeasterly after
 00 UTC. MAPR observed such transition at about 0145.

Again, 10 sec data was frozen but the raw data are fine.
The signal strength is still relatively weak (50 dB pre-launnch) and

does not help. However, the switching seems working after a while, the signal
junmps to 40dB and slightly decreases.
The sonde was observed by MAPR. An inversion occurs at 5.5km.

above it. 
The time has been syn and the sonde can be observed on the mapr plot.

Good signals for clear conditions, with winds to 1.5 km.

Working ok. Returns are weak and spurs are strong.

GONDOLA SONDE:
Voltage at 14 this morning, and up to 13.4 this evening.
Works OK

SOUNDING:
One test sonde at 2250. Dry layer between 3.5~6 km and relatively humid
layer above. But the data quality is not very good.

MISC:
Test connector between 1930~2120 for comm.
Reboot ISS at 2055 to fix a modem problem. The reboot worked.
The radiation sensor was cleared at 1635. 
20% chance of snow tonight and 40% of snow tomorrow.
Comm is down again at 0056.

Working ok. Returns are weak and spurs are strong.

GONDOLA SONDE:
Voltage at 5.4 this morning not working well, and up to 15.3 this evening.
Looks like Randy charged the battery.

MISC:
Cleared radiation sensors at 1640
Reboot ISS again to fix a modem problem. The reboot worked.
Tian arrived today. Will take over logs tomorrow. Weather forcast Wednesday
night or Thursday.

WEATHER:
Sunny today with thin cirrus all day. The low last night was -23C, the high
today was +1C (havn't seen above zero for a while).
Solar radiation result looked ok today, so will assume yesterday afternoon
was a frost effect.

MAPR:
Pretty good signals considering the cold. Winds to 1.5 km most of the day
Cleaned exabyte drive 1.

1299:
Working well. Changed jaz disk (J:\ drive) and deleted SPC files on D: drive.
Disk now less than 10% full. The new jaz should last through the end of the
project.

GONDOLA SONDE:
Voltage at 6.3 this morning and 8.3 this evening. I left a message for Randy
that he will want to charge it soon. This morning showed inversion with
-2C at top, -8C at base, -16C at ISS.

SOUNDING:
No soundings today.

MISC:
Cleared radiation sensors at 1610
Installed spare helium regulator and flow meter on backboard. Checked ok.
Modem not working again today. Will reboot tomorrow when help is around.

64: SOFTWARE, Site SNOWFALL02, Mon 11-Feb-2002 05:19:28 GMT, Comm failure and solution
The ppp link on the sun was failing to dial out because the swap
space (/tmp on the sun) was full. This filled because there were
several IDL jobs which were not exiting properly.
The solution (thanks Gary) was to reboot the sun.
We did this and transferred the last day's data by hand.
Note that the 1299 serial link may timeout during this process
so POP on the 1299 may need to be restarted (not this time).
Can check by looking at the latest data time on the Zebra
Data icon's "last data display".

Today was mostly a day off after yesterday's IOP. Sunny all day. Last nights
low was --28C and the high today was -9C. The solar radiation sensor data
looks suspect. There may be some frost on it. (Did not clear frost this
morning).

Weak backscatter most of the day. Some better winds early in the day and
after 0Z tonight.

Working well. Disk 93.5% full tonight.

GONDOLA SONDE:
Voltage at 8.1 this evening. Low, but maybe solar cell will charge it or 
Randy will need to recharge.

WEATHER:
Snow today beginning about 13 UT at surface. Snowed much of the day ending
at abbut 21 UT. SPL was not in cloud but collected crystal data beginning
at 15 UT. We launched 5 sondes, capturing the event well.
At 8am (15 UT) Randy reported no cloud at SPL, but they are collecting
crystal observations.

MAPR:
Good signal all day. Good winds.
Interesting data 1615-1645. Snow is falling from 2.3 km and strengthens at
1.3 km. Between 1.0 to 1.3 km the fall velocity becomes nearly zero (the fall
speed is around 1 above and below this layer). Is there some convection due
to heat release from riming? The velocities below don't seem to increase,
but the plot scale is crude. Worth a closer look.

1299:
Working well. Disk 90.1% full tonight.

GONDOLA SONDE:
Voltage at 5.3 this morning, rising to 11.0 by mid afternoon. Maybe this is
temperature dependent. Nephlometer voltage varied a lot. During snow it was
sometimes a constant 2.1 or so. But there was no cloud. Could it be registering
snow obscuration? Was the sensor path blocked by snow? Is the value somehow
depending on the battery voltage?

SOUNDING:
Five soundings today. Filling balloons straight from the Helium cylanders
so widely varying ascent rates. Worked ok though. More gas works better to
keep sonde from being blocked behind mountains.
Inversion about 4 km MSL strengthened through the afternoon - looks like
a subsidence inversion.

MISC:
NOTE: The final sounding needs to be reprocessed to recover lower
data. Because of very slow ascent, software didn't detect launch until
almost 9 km aloft.
Pressure increased rapidly through the day, about 15 mb in past 24 hours.
Cleared radiation sensors 1545, 1800, 2120 UT. Obscured between these
times by falling snow.
Cleared RASS of snow at 23:30 (after snow ended).
Modem not connecting to Boulder. Cycled modem/freewave power both in
ISS and in tennis court. Still no connection. 
Three tests of snow depth/density:
1. Depth measurement in front of trailer is 20 cm and fluffy.
   A melt test shows the density to be 0.03 so water equivalent of 6 mm.
2. Snowboard depth (a little later so some consolidation possible) was 18 cm.
   And the melt test shows this equivalent to 8 mm (density of 0.044).
3. Another snowboard test at 00Z (later): depth: 17 cm;  melted depth: 8 mm;
   density: 0.047

Snow gauge shows about 23 hundreths of an inch water equivalent or 5.84 mm
over the past 24 hours (0Z to 24Z on 9 Feb 2002).

Sonde signal was ok before launch; 45 dB on omni and 75 on Yagi, but became
weaker soon after launch, 13db then 0 db. However, it tracks ok even at
0dB. Problem could be blocking by terrain (eg. it was once 40km downwind
while 8km AGL, or about 11 degrees above the horizon). Will use more Helium
next time. GPS tracking fine (7+ satellites used in solution).
Used 35 cu ft Helium
Tuned sonde to 406 MHz to avoid gondola sonde.

Sonde on MAPR may appear as a strong downward signal(aliased?) on SOAP plot.
MAPR shows sonde released during an updraft, consistent with fast
ascent rate.

WEATHER:
Today was a "snowy" day. Overcast all day with several pulses of snow. We
launched 4 sondes, but SPL did not collect much data because of high
(50 mph) winds. No crystal observations because of winds.
At 1910 UT could see clear orographic cloud over Mt. Werner, We are just
outside of it and can see sun through thinning clouds overhead. Snow or
virga to north.
Interesting double updraft this morning at 14:40. Many more updrafts
through the day (convection?). Clouds thinning this evening (0 UT) and
we will see what happens overnight 

MAPR:
Good signal beginning with snow aloft at 10 UT. High wind speeds above
3 km. Very interesting "split jet" 20-22 UT. 

1299:
Working okay. Should show snow pulses well. Disk 87.5% full tonight.
Will need to check backup and delete from D: drive soon.

GONDOLA SONDE:
Voltage at 10.8 this morning, 10.3 this evening. Still not sure it
works. There were periods of constant 2.1 voltage today when there
should be no cloud. Gondola stopped for part of the afternoon because
of high winds. Maybe G-sonde become snowcovered.

SOUNDING:
Four soundings today. After the first one, I tightened the rotater and
checked all connections. The signal strength improved. However, the final
two sondes were lost behind the mountain at 8-6 km MSL. This may be
because of high winds aloft and the wind direction (out of the WSW).

MISC:
Radiation sensors were clear this morning.
Snow on our snowboard ranged from 2.5 to 4.5 cm (because of wind).
Melt density test resulted in 0.12:1.00 ratio so 3.0 mm to 5.4 mm
water equivalent. Note that snow gauges showed values of 5 and 8
hundreths of an inch which are 1.2 and 2.0 mm. Did blowing snow cover
our snowboard deeper or did the wind make the snowgauge measurements
inaccurate?

Use ICON:  shortcut to serial_prog.llb
In bottom left window (Path to file) enter: "C:\tmp\steamboat.txt"
In bottom right window (amplifier command) enter: "fo"
(will show forward power)
At top click "two arrows chasing each other in a circle" symbol
This will start displaying forward power every minute.
Typical values are between 50% and 80% (?) but don't worry unless
it goes to zero.

This monitor is crude and primarily indicates that the system is running

MAPR:
Weak signals but winds filling in by the end of the day. One updraft around

GONDOLA SONDE:
Voltage at 11.9 this morning at 12.0 this evening. Morning had the
top 8C warmer(!) than the base.

SOUNDING:
One sounding at 23:05Z in anticipation of a little snow. Had weak signal
and possible no winds (looked ok on 1-second data, bad on 10-second and
reprocessed). Reading coefficients from disk worked well. Probably no
more soundings this evening.

MISC:
Cleared frost from radiation sensors again this morning at 16:30Z. Not much
change in readings.

Still some longer signal dropouts.
Randy and Doug looked over Gondola 17 this morning and found no
indications of trauma. The antenna looked fine. We stared at the
G-sonde output today. Note that the nephlometer voltage sometimes
goes to 3.1 when in the base and top stations with weak signal.
Also, sometimes the pressure is erroneous. Will try to document
this more and speak with Ned or Terry.  

Note on yesterday's observation of a repeatable section of lower
nephlometer voltage (782-770 mb). This is in the flat spot where
the transmission may be poor. Randy notes the controls for the
snowmaking equipment is there, but that shouldn't produce much
aerosol/fog. However, in light of the other 3.1 values, we suspect
this is "missing" data.

This evening (01Z 4 Feb), with the gondola stopped at the base, the
battery voltage is steady at 12.0 and the nephlometer voltage is steady
at 3.1. (The temperature is steady at about +2C "inside"). 

SOUNDING:
No soundings today. We will do one tomorrow.

MISC:

Voltage at 12.3 at 16Z (morning) and tonight is at 12.2. Must have charged
up in today's sun so maybe 12.3 is about as high as it gets.
Still see data dropouts but also alot of good data. At 16Z showed much
warmer at top than base (-5C vs -15C) and -18C at the ISS. At 0Z(Feb 3)
showing a 2C inversion from the base (790 mb) up to about 770 mb.
Note: Seems to consistantly show a slightly lower nephlometer voltage on 
a section of the lower part of mountain. Today was 782-770 mb.

SOUNDING:
No soundings today.

MISC:
Clearde frost from radiation sensors this morning at 16:45Z. Not much

Changed the rack and softward to read coefficients from the floppy disk which

be to replace the rack tape reader with the spare (configured for paper
tape) and edit the file: C:\LabVIEW5\GLASS ver2.30\glass.cfg.

but fewer than yesterday based on my small sample of observing times. No
word from Randy on checking it out.

it is related to traffic on the mountain?

Working okay. Apparently the POP icon is minimized at 0Z. No problem though.

GONDOLA SONDE:
Tonight the battery voltage is 12.1. Problems with the G-sonde today. We had
a lot of data dropouts (reporting 0's in all fields). During investigation,
the power supply became flakie, but worked ok after being recessed. Dropouts
were less later in the day. Bill noted about (less than?) 10% data drouputs.
Asked Randy to charge battery and examine antenna on gondola.

SOUNDING:
No soundings today. Recieved sonde coefficients on disk from Lou. Perhaps
tomorrow Ned will tell me how to switch GLASS to use them.

MISC:

WEATHER:
At 8:15 this morning (1515Z) Randy reported crystals falling at SPL, but
no cloud. Crystals also at base. Sun broke through at 16Z, thin overcast
occasionally throughout day. There was a total of 4.0 cm of snow on the
board accumulated from 18Z on 1/20 through 18Z on 1/30. (No density test,
sorry Bill). At 18Z the G-sonde voltage was 12.3 with no cloud present.
Its getting cold overnight.
  AMEND: snowmelt test showed 3.6 mm liquid water. Again this is very close
  to measured value of 14/100 inch=3.556 mm. (Did this now that I found
  the bottletop).

MAPR:
Looking ok, but some odd vertical velocity in lowest 800 m. Looks like
clutter, but not strong reflectivity. Light winds in valley, stronger
above 2km where measured.

1299:
Working okay. However, I found the windows screen messed up (text across and
no spectral plots) at 02Z (31st). Fixed by minimizing/maximizing POP icon.
Apparently no data lost.

GONDOLA SONDE:
Gondola seemed to be working much of the day. Didn't see cloud while I was
monitoring it. Battery this evening at 12.42

SOUNDING:
No soundings today. Lou is sending sonde coefficients on disk, and Ned should
tell me how to switch GLASS to use them.

The "big storm" didn't develop so much, although we got nearly 4 inches.
SPL was below cloud base all day, but collecting crystal types.
Light snow all day. Very light in afternoon. Some periods just dusting

Snow depth measurement at 18 was 9cm, which melted to 6.5 mm 
Snow gauge shows 26 hundreths of an inch from 5-18Z which is 6.6 mm.
(Amazing agreement, non?). Negligable accumulation (about 0.5 cm snow)
for remainder of day.

MAPR:
Good winds in snow to about 3km. Generally light winds at surface, but
30+ m/s winds at 3km.
Interesting updrafts at 3Z and 4:30Z before snow began.

1299:
Working okay, although SOAP plots weren't working until we rebooted the sun.
NOTE: that NIMA plots for 28 Jan show constant and unrealistic updraft
for much of the day.

Seeing more clear-air signal.  For a time there were winds at 1-2km,

X-windows locked up on one desktop again, so had to reboot at 2152UT.
Later locked up again, but found I could use the ALT-F5 key and tab keys
to move between desktops, and after that is was okay.
Worked more on the scripts to do backups to exabyte and the raidzone.

1299:
Working okay, although SOAP plots weren't working until we rebooted the sun.

GONDOLA SONDE:
Gondola seemed to be stuck at one level (the base station) most of
the day.  Finally moving again at 2330UT.

Re-levelled both antennas (see separate log entry).

On Mapr, worked on automatic data transfer to raidzone based on 
Gary's raidsync script.  The transfer is started by the same job
that zips the tms files, mapr_scripts/compresstms_and_copytoraid
Both cor and tms files for winds and rass modes are transferred,
about 10GB per day.

Also worked on automatic backup to tape mapr_scripts/auto_mapr_to_tape
based on Charlies mapr_to_tape.  Copies just tms files, which are
placed in dir /data/mapr/to_put_on_tape/ by compresstms_and_copytoraid.
There are about 7GB per day of tms files 2 exabyte tapes.

GONDOLA SONDE:
Nephlometer saw some mist and an inversion again this morning.
Temperatures on mountain warm, eg 17UT 0C at base & 4C at 780mB.

Both profiler antennas had moved a little from vertical.
Since there is ice underneath them, this was expected.

The 1299 was tilted about 0.5 deg towards the south.

Seeing some interesting features, a strong inversion around 1730,

WEATHER:
Fine this morning (no snow last night), snowing and blowing snow
from midday to about  7pm (1UT).  Launched 4 radiosondes.
From 18 UT - 2 UT, just over 10 cm accumulation, about 4 mm melted
(consistent with snow guages which both measured 16/100 inch or 4 mm).
Randy reported some rimming early in storm (around midday),
later clouds dried up at the lab.
More snow begining about 2UT (23rd Jan) in evening.

At 4:30 pm (23:30 UT) Randy reports high snow rate, with mostly
pristing dendrites and only a little aggregation. Crystals 0.7 to 0.8 mm
diameter. No liquid cloud, except a very few droplets. Running the 2D
imager, and crystal concentration measurements 5 minutes every half-hour.

MAPR:
Working okay. 
Lost about 40 minutes data from 20 UT because of mis-calculation of
disk space (didn't allow for some files recopied to raidzone).

1299:
Working okay.
This morning a couple of "sampling did not finsh in 6 secs" messages,
but seems okay. 
Brief interuption about 18UT to remove RS232 minitester for checking modem. 

GONDOLA SONDE:
Running well, voltage during day 13.4, evening 13V.
During afternoon nephlometer voltage dropped to zero, probably
covered in snow.

COMMS: 
More comms problems, logging on to ISP, but problems getting ppp link.
Changed modem dip switch 6 to set Carrier Detect over-ride.

WEATHER:
Snow last night, finishing at ground level early this morning, however
continued aloft to mid morning.  About 1.5 cm accumulation.
Fine and mild in afternoon with scattered high cloud.

MAPR:
Working okay. 
Worked on RASS today, running but having problem with low gates.
Tweaking HPA and blanking settings, but lowest reliable level 400m,
occasionally get 300m.  Should be able to get lower.
Just running hourly for now.  Got RASS plots up on web site.
Manually resynced MAPR clock to armiss at 2216UT, was 28 secs fast.

1299:
Working okay.

SOUNDING:
Tried to launch a radiosonde, but had lots of trouble with paper tape
reader.  Tired to read one tape many times, (cleaning out holes each
time) but eventually the tape started to tear, so tried a 2nd sonde.  
Finally after repeated attempts and blasting air through the reader,
could read the tape but too late for a launch.
Failed sonde is 044269413, keeping sonde 044269405 for later use.
Really should scrap the paper tapes and go to the file system of
inputting coeffients.

GONDOLA SONDE:
Saw few signals last evening as battery voltage down as low as 6V.
Randy and Doug recharged the sonde's battery so no observations most
of the day.

COMMS: modem wasn't dailing out this afternoon.  Had to cycle its power
a few times to get it to reset.  Okay now.

MISC:
Brushed snow off radiation sensors around 18UT and cleaned soon after.

Visited by group from Steamboat Weather Summit (broadcasters meeting).
One trampled snow around net radiation sensor around 21UT.

More snow shovelling.  Some melt occurring around profilers,
hopefully we don't get the lake we had last year.

Too windy at Storm Peak Lab for their measurements.

MAPR:
Working okay.  
Shut down 2315 for about 25 minutes to clear snow from radome.

1299:
Working okay.
Shut down 23UT for about 15 minutes to clear snow from radome.

GONDOLA SONDE:
Shut down about 21UT for 15 minutes to try & install zip drive again. 
Installed driver software from Iomega web site.
Still can't insert zip disks into drive, spindle is obstruting it.

Around 2345UT laptop came up with blue windows screen saying
an exception had occurred... hit any button to continue.
I did and it seems to be working ok.
Voltage this evening down to 11.2, was 11.7 during afternoon.

Randy & Doug visited this afternoon.  They were curious about the
large decrease in nephlometer voltage (ie, decrease in visibility)
as gondola sonde goes into building at top and bottom end of runs.
The temperature & RH is also higher in the buildings, probably heaters
melting the snow and all the people breathing.
Randy suggested that perhaps condensation occurs on nephlometer
as it goes into the buildings.  

MISC:
Brushed snow from radiation sensors about 20UT.
Snow guages both registered 9/100ths of an inch, ie 2.25mm,
similar to the 2-3mm melted noted above.

A little snow last night (less than 1 cm accumulation).
Fine and sunny during the day, a few storm clouds to the north late
afternoon.

MAPR:
Working okay.  Good obs of of hot air balloon this morning.
Strong clear-air echoes as some snow began at 7UT.
Some wave looking activity this evening (1UT Jan 20).

Had to reboot last night (2:13UT), as x windows locked up.
System seemed to be running okay, but could get no rsponse from
console (could connect via armiss).  Restarted 2:25, seems ok.
Fixed a bug in idl plotting routines that left occasional gaps
in plots, such as yesterday evening.

1299:
Working ok, hot air balloon not as obvious as MAPR.
Also seeing waves, though not as clearly as MAPR.

MISC:
Snow around radiation sensors, cleared off about 1730.
Interestingly vis dropped, rather than jumped, probably because
snow wasn't on directly top, but rather built up around it and was 
scattering extra sunlight onto sensor. 
Noticed that tennis centre generator putting out a lot of steam
that was shadowing the sensors around 1730 - 1800. Sky was clear then.

Gondola sonde:  Nephlometer showed a dip 780 - 770 mB this morning, 
and could see slight mist on mountain.
Tried to install zip drive so we could get some data off.  
Had to reboot laptop and didn't know password to startup
(turns out hitting cancel is okay).
Zip drive not accepting disks, perhaps because no driver installed?
Gap in obs from 19UT to 0UT. Voltage around midday 12.2V, this evening 11.7

Visited Storm Peak Lab this afternoon, very impressive.
They said they saw a little riming early on in the Tues evening event.

Had to shovel thru a good sized snow bern created by the lot crew 
to keep a path clear for the trailers.

Another snow storm late afternoon, 2330 - 0UT, brief but breezy, about 1cm
additional accumulation.  Launched another sonde at 0UT.
Randy says they are in cloud, and getting observations.

MAPR:
Good snow observations.  Storm this evening almost looked convective.
Strong clear-air echoes around snow around 20 and 2330 UT.
Clock sync to armiss doesn't appear to be working, 
did manual sync at 1816 (was 27 sec fast). 

1299:
Similar observations to mapr.
Had error message about 1UT (19th): averaging did not complete in 6 secs
but seems to be working okay.

MISC:
Radiation sensors covered in snow until cleared off about 1705UT,
had a little frost, blow dried off about 1740.
Brushed off a bit more snow about 1950.

Gondola sonde voltage at little low, 11.9 early morning, 12.2 afternoon
(as solar panels catch a few rays), then down to 11.7 in evening.
Doug & Randy will recharge.
Nephlometer showed a slight dip (indicating cloud) at around 770 mB
about 1730UT, the 17UT sounding showed a slight peak in RH at the
same level.  Doug also report light cloud below the lab.


Saw Andy Rossy this afternoon.  He's going to email me a copy of
his snow board observations.

WEATHER:
Fine and cold today, snow last night, did IOP.
About 5-6 cm fell at site (melted a sample and it was about 2mm),
very light and puffy.  At the Storm Peak lab about 35 cm fell.
Doug described it as very pristine.  Initially they found low ph,
but later ph approached neutral, indicating very clean snow.  
Did two soundings last night. 

A little more snow aloft this evening.

MAPR:
Working well.  Good observations of snow storm.  There seemed to be
strong oscillating up & down motion during storm.  There were strong
winds aloft and may have been gravity waves or deep eddies.
Shut down for about 30 mins at 1830UT to clear snow off radome.

1299:
Similar observations to mapr.
Shutdown at 1805 for about 20 mins to clear snow off radome.

MISC:
Radiation sensors covered in snow until about 1830UT,
big jump in vis and drop in ir after clearing off snow.

More trouble with comms. 
Last night asppp log indicated connection to ISP okay but then:
process_ppp_msg: PPP_ERROR_IND Maximum number of configure requests exceeded
then connection would drop-out.
This morning modem wasn't responding so replaced with a new modem.
Seems okay for now.

Andy Rossy, a grad student with Doug & Randy visited the site.
He'll be leaving a snow sampling board at the site (and at a few sites
on the mountain).  Will look at snow crystal type, ph, and water equivalent.

WEATHER:
Fine with scattered high cloud during morning.

MAPR:
Working okay, seeing clear-air echoes to about 1.5km and occasional
echoes around 3km.
Power meter flucuating from 30 - 110%, though echo power fairly steady,
probably a meter problem as usual.
Wave-like echoes on mapr and 1299 late afternoon (about 20UT - 1UT).
Got mapr realtime page working for ispa on atd web site.

1299:
Also saw waves.
Rebooted about 2340UT to set sharing so that mapr can pull spectral
files over for nima processing.
(Set using control panel -> network -> share files and also
on D drive properties).
SOAP not running for some reason - could be because too many processes
on armiss - killed off a few and it seems ok now.

MISC:
Vis and net radiation sensors had a little frosting this morning.

Had more trouble with comms.  Cycling power to modem seemed to
fix it, though had to do it several times for it to come back on
sucessfully.

Art Judson (of snow and avalanche fame) visited the site.
Said that yesterday's snow only amounted to a few 100s of an inch
(water equivalent) which is probably why the snow guages didn't trip.

WEATHER:
Snowing from about 9am all morning, then more lightly and intermittantly
during the afternoon.  Cloud base around 1/2 way up gondola.

IOP:
Launched a sonde about 10am (17UT), good flight.
Setup aspirator near front of trailer, however it interferred with 
the gondola sonde - should try further away next time and adjust sonde freq.
Doug & Randy had some of their instruments working,
however had to shut them down during afternoon when wind there
hit 30 mph.

MAPR:
Ran in tms mode from 1612 to 2150UT.
It and the 1299 are seeing snow echoes to about 3 km,
(sonde also indicated cloud top about 3km).

MISC:
Had some trouble with comms, which Gary sorted out.
(ppp had been resetting at midnight, turned off).
Got extra sonde plotting working on MAPR and updated web site.
Also setting up automatic downloading of CSU RAMS model pages
on ale (http://rams.atmos.colostate.edu/cases)

Getting the surface met across the net is not working.
 "ISS k:\campbell\cr10data.txt" is not working properly. Get anj error message on the sounding system computer when it tries to read the file. I can check the file through the windows exploerer and it is up dating. I asked Gary and there have been no changes in the Sun software from Improve2 where this command line worked fine. I think I'm useing the same rev of Glass as I have out in Improve also.There also seems to be something wrong with the transfer of the sounding from the sounding pc to the sun. Wonder if this is related to all the networking problems yesterday. The K drive is mapped and I can access the folders from windows exploerer

Setting up site in SE corner of Meadows parking lot at Steamboat,
about 100m north of tennis bubble.

EQUIPMENT:

	MAPR with RASS
	1299 Profiler
	Met station (T, RH, P, Wind)
	Solar radiation (vis, IR, net)
	two snow guages
	GLASS sounding system
	Sensors on gondola (P, T, RH, nephlometer)

Setup proceeding well.
Both profilers running.  Having some problems with gating cable on MAPR, 
results in weak echoes even though meter on TX indicates full power.  
With suitable fiddling (Mike working on connectors in dogbox) it seems 
to be okay.

MAPR is using a raidzone (1.5 TB) for data (tms & cor) backup
(plus exabyte tapes for 2nd copy of tms files).

Networking problems, fixed by using fixed IP addresses instead of DHCP.

Comms - using a 2.4 GHz freewave link to a phone line in the tennis
bubble office.

Sounding system is up . GPS has been tested with both Mapr and 1299 running was getting 8 sat's.GPS antenna has been mounted on the oppsite side of the trailer from the mapr antenna.Test flight will be made in the morning.

Could not get either of the pc's to map a drive or ping the sun system using 
dhcp. Got things working by entering ip adresses etc.
Sounding system is 128.117.80.88
1299 profiler system is 128.117.80.89
mask is 255.255.255.0
gateway 128.117.80.251.

Even after giving set adresses didn't fully work but after several reboots redoing settings things strated to work.
