weather: cloudy for most of the day, a few periods of clear. Adam been working just fine. Did data backup - apparently was problem with CD and then backup moved files so that they couldn't be found when retried. Cleaned rime off of all TRH sensors at ~03:30 GMT.
System is working with the adam on the snow rather than on the tower mount. No glitches today.

- 106: status, Site , Fri 01-Dec-2000 07:43:06 NZDT, failure
the adam failed / stopped again after five minutes. No time for this. Perhaps there is a buffer somewhere that fills up. Unless some advise for better operation comes down the pike this experiment is over. Happily, a reasonable quantity of very interesting data has been bagged.

The box temperature did not seem too warm - it certainly is warm around the heating plate, but the exhaust of the fan is < 30C. I do not know where the T measurement is made - but, if it is on or near the heating plate I can understand the apparent elevated T. Bottomline - the system is working and not steaming so I will leave it alone.
- 101: adam_field_computer, Site , Thu 30-Nov-2000 14:05:58 NZDT, box temperature
the tbox.ragwort seems to be off scale - I will check on that soon.

Steve and I set up the adam on the ground next to the tower after bringing it back to the lab and having it run. We slowly connected everything - allowing time for failure between changes. Right now it is completely connected and has been running for a while. I need to check to see if the 22m fan is turned on.

My last plan is to bring the adam back to the
building.
- 95: adam_field_computer, Site , Wed 29-Nov-2000 23:54:49 NZDT, Ragwort is in a state of limbo

goes down. It often reboots itself.

It should be noted that a plane landed in the last

Ragwort still up and down. I have changed the

is some RF interferenc from the planes. There has been
a number of flights today. A plane just took off
and we will restart it. Keep your fingers crossed.

- 68: base_system, Site , Tue 28-Nov-2000 09:33:12 NZDT, Second hard disk
I played with the second hard disk. As far as
I can tell all the parameters for networking were
set correctly. However, it did not work. It does
not see the network server when I do the command
nslookup. There may be another parameter not
being set in linuxconf.
- 67: base_system, Site , Tue 28-Nov-2000 09:31:05 NZDT, Base down for work on second hard disk
I brought the base down to configure the second
had disk for network communication. There was
one bad event. When I logged off as aster the screen
would give me a login prompt. It was hung up.
So I had to do the 3 key stroke to reboot.
The base has been down since 8:50 local time.

Time: 14:40 to 14:50 local
I was just out at the tower and did a measurement of the
lower sonic. From the head the height is 3.1 meters.
- 60: base_system, Site , Mon 27-Nov-2000 13:23:09 NZDT, CD hardware
May be the crash was a benefit because I
am able to read CDs where before I was having
some problems with both CD systems.
- 59: base_system, Site , Mon 27-Nov-2000 10:47:09 NZDT, BASE DOWN, ~20:00 to 21:45 GMT
I had a major crash with the base computer. While
trying to create a backup data cd, the cdwriter locked
up. It was constantly sending an error message about
writing. So I kill the process. I then could not get the
cd to eject. While my next idea was to cycle power on it.
CRASH! The laptop went through a reboot then complained
about a system file error. So I was dead in the water.
Tried reaching Gordon but no luck. I tried the backup
hard disk but it is outdated. So I tried the other disk.
It provided some useful info about correcting the
corrupt file manually. So I did and it worked.
- 58: sonics, Site , Sun 26-Nov-2000 19:35:22 NZDT, Sonics leveled
I did a final adjustment on the sonics. Time was
~18:50 to 19:25 local.
- 57: chemistry, Site , Sun 26-Nov-2000 17:19:17 NZDT, Snow Sampling
On 11/26/00 from 1655 until 1710 LT I switched the NO sample inlet to the 22 M tube and attached a snow sampling inlet. Sample snow a a variety of places. [NO] in top layer of snow is 4-5 times higher than ambient (500 pptv vs 100 pptv).
- 56: temp_rh, Site , Sun 26-Nov-2000 14:57:20 NZDT, NEW TRH heights
I remeasured the heights of the 3 lower sensors.
The measurement was made out at the inlet, not the
tower support. Based on these numbers, the true heights
of the upper sensors need to be reduced by ~20cm.
The reason for this is the snow level at the tower
was deeper due to wind effects. The .5m did not change
because I mounted it after the IC test.

NOTE: Over the last few days the adam was a major pain.
The problem was solved.
- 53: sonics, Site , Sun 26-Nov-2000 11:48:55 NZDT, Sonic boom angle
Based on the map of the tower, I have assumed
the sonic boom angle to be 70 degrees. I have
changed the cal file.
- 52: adam_field_computer, Site , Sun 26-Nov-2000 11:45:36 NZDT, We are back on the air!
The adam is back up and running. The problem
was power via the TRH fans. Would you believe
RF interference? That is the best guess. With
the long fan cables running up the tower, they
act like antennas. Everything worked ok during
the IC because those fan cables were at the ground.
- 51: adam_field_computer, Site , Sun 26-Nov-2000 08:04:27 NZDT, ADAM status
The ADAM an the night outside on the deck.
There were 2 TRHs attached. It appeared to have no
problems. I had changed the muffin fan because it was
noisy. I hope the problem was due to this fan and power.
Will do some more testing on the deck before moving
out to the tower.
- 50: adam_field_computer, Site , Sat 25-Nov-2000 23:10:39 NZDT, ADAM is DOWN!
As one can see in the data, ragwort is down.
I have replaced the fiber. Wired it inside the box
since the other fiber connectors had gone bad.
The adam runs for a short time then stops. It even
reboots its self. I have tried different combinations
of boards with the same result.
My next thought was a power problem at the tower. This
problem started when Marty installed his system. So
I tried a different outlet and still the same results.
Right now the ADAM is outside the building. The same
optic cable is hooked up. There are no serial sensors
attached.
- 49: network, Site , Sat 25-Nov-2000 19:30:24 NZDT, fiber optic problems
It appears our problem is in the fiber optics.
3 out of 4 lines are bad! I am assuming the
process used to fix the heads may not like the
cold weather.
- 48: adam_field_computer, Site , Sat 25-Nov-2000 14:57:35 NZDT, Heater On
The heater is on in the ADAM.
- 47: adam_field_computer, Site , Sat 25-Nov-2000 14:56:07 NZDT, Ragwort up, maybe
I have ping running to yarrow. It seems a long
time, about 10msec. It hasn't crashed since I started
pinging it. I am going to let it keep pinging
while I go get something to eat.
- 46: adam_field_computer, Site , Sat 25-Nov-2000 14:42:20 NZDT, Ragwort has been up and down over the last 1 hour
As usual, when you want things to run they don't!
Ragwort has been a pain every since the move to profile.
I have tried changing matrix and ironic cards. I believe
the problem is something between yarrow and ragwort.
It boots up ok then crashes.I am able to ping ragwort
but not yarrow.
- 45: adam_field_computer, Site , Sat 25-Nov-2000 13:32:59 NZDT, Ragwort went down during the move
Ragwort went down during the move from IC mode to
Profile mode. Maybe a power glitch while moving the
fan power cables. I had to do a manual reboot to get it
going.
- 44: temp_rh, Site , Sat 25-Nov-2000 13:21:42 NZDT, Moving to profile format
Marty and I started moving the TRH sensors
to the profile format. This started at about
12:40 local.
- 43: , Site , Sat 25-Nov-2000 10:32:35 NZDT, heater turned off
I turned off the 100 watt heater. It was getting
pretty warm in there. The temperature was up to ~25C
and climbing.
- 42: temp_rh, Site , Sat 25-Nov-2000 09:03:03 NZDT, TRH intercomparison results
Unfortunately, the ironic went down.
Based on the data collected from 17:00
11/24 to 12:00 11/25 (local), the TRH sensors
from ground level to 10.3 meters are within 0.05
C. The worst case for the 22m is about .1C with respect
to 2.3m.
Note, the adam did go down from 2:00 to 9:00 local.
- 41: adam_field_computer, Site , Sat 25-Nov-2000 08:51:44 NZDT, 16 channel replaced with 8 channel
I just replaced the 16 channel with the 8 channel.
I also turned on the 100 watt heater to see how warm it
gets inside.
- 40: adam_field_computer, Site , Sat 25-Nov-2000 08:27:00 NZDT, Yarrow down again, 1:30AM local time
Yarrow went down again. I may switch back
to the 8 channel card. Maybe it is a temperature
related thing. I do not remember testing a 16 channel
card in the cold. The box temperature is around 4C.
I rebooted ragwort from the base. Yarrow still did not
come up. I am going to change back to the 8 channel card.
- 39: sonics, Site , Fri 24-Nov-2000 20:20:14 NZDT, sonic spikes
The sonics like to spike when the blowing snow starts up.
I do not think ther is much we can do about that.
- 38: adam_field_computer, Site , Fri 24-Nov-2000 20:10:51 NZDT, Yarrow stopped, mxreset did not get it going
Yarrow went down for some reason. An mxreset did not
get the adam going. I did a hard reset and the adam came
back up.
- 37: chemistry, Site , Fri 24-Nov-2000 16:58:55 NZDT, inlet pipe placement
The NO instrument inlet tubes were attached to the 0.5 and 4.8 m TRH sensors. When the NO mode is high (5 VDC) the NO instrument is sampling from the 4.8 m inlet.
- 36: temp_rh, Site , Fri 24-Nov-2000 16:51:27 NZDT, sensor placement for TRH profile
The final TRH sensor configuration is:
Height Serial # chammel #
0.5 m 101 202
1.0 m 104 203
2.3 m 704 204
4.8 m 007 205
10.3 m 703 206
22.0 m 502 207
- 35: chemistry, Site , Fri 24-Nov-2000 15:47:48 NZDT, NO hookup
Marty has setup his NO system and has attached his signals
to ragwort. We are getting data.
- 34: temp_rh, Site , Fri 24-Nov-2000 15:43:59 NZDT, Switched TRH704 and TRH502
The TRH profile is looking pretty good. Over the last 4 hours
the max temperature difference is about .06C. I decided to change
two sensor locations just to see if the long boom has any effect.
I changed 2.3m with 1.1m. We should consider these sensors in their
final locations.
- 33: sonics, Site , Fri 24-Nov-2000 15:00:54 NZDT, Spiking on sonics
Both sonics are starting to show spikes. the winds have picked up
and the clouds have moved in. This may be related to tiny ice crystals
moving through the air. The spiking is on the U component. If it continues,
I may change the receive time window in the sonics.
- 32: adam_field_computer, Site , Fri 24-Nov-2000 14:44:54 NZDT, Ironic changed back to 16 channel
I have changed back to the Ironic 16 channel card.
System is running
- 31: temp_rh, Site , Fri 24-Nov-2000 10:39:59 NZDT, 22m, 702 replaced with 007
Replaced TRH702 with TRH007 at about 10:30 local.
One item of interest is the radiation inlet tube on
TRH702 has most of its white paint peeled off. It appears
the paint used on this tube does not like the cold. Anyway
maybe this has something to do with the lower temperatures.
If 007 looks good, I will try changing inlet tubes.
- 30: temp_rh, Site , Fri 24-Nov-2000 09:41:16 NZDT, Intercomparison layout
The intercomparison array layout:
Height is .93 m
Going from the far end of the tower toward the building:

- 28: status, Site , Fri 24-Nov-2000 09:32:05 NZDT, daily status, 11/24

The TRHs have been in a intercomparison more for the last
20 hours. Using R and plotdat.ts I looked at the differences
between them. Most of the time it is within +- 0.05C. The sensor
in location 22m, TRH702, reads low compared to everybody else.
I do not think it is a location issue because it is located in
the middle of the IC array. The sensor on the long boom, TRH 502,
is in the middle of the difference plot so I believe the longer
boom is not affecting the measurement.
Since Marty is not ready, I am going to replace sensor 702, 22m, with
a spare unit.

The sonics have been zeroed at -25C.
- 15: adam_field_computer, Site , Tue 21-Nov-2000 12:27:35 NZDT, update on data throughput
Gordon found a bug in the ingest program and made a fix.
Things look better. We will let it run for a period of time
with the 16 channel card.
- 14: adam_field_computer, Site , Tue 21-Nov-2000 09:34:11 NZDT, ADAM with 16 channel ironic
I have replaced the 8 channel Ironic with the 16 channel board.
Lets hope this takes care of the throughput problem.
- 13: temp_rh, Site , Tue 21-Nov-2000 09:32:40 NZDT, TRH data rate update
Changing the data rate of the TRH to 2 saeconds did not
help the throughput. I have changed the 8 channel Ironic
to the 16 channel board. TRH data rates have been changed
back to 1 sec.
- 12: temp_rh, Site , Tue 21-Nov-2000 08:28:47 NZDT, data rate changed on TRH sensors
The throughput on the IRONIC 8 channel board is
too slow. The data rate from the sonics is 19HZ
not 20HZ. Gordon believes this is due to the
interrupt handling on the board. As a test I decided
to slow down the data rate from the TRH units to
2 secs. It would be best if we could change the
baud rate of the TRH but that is not possible to
do on the fly.
- 11: temp_rh, Site , Mon 20-Nov-2000 23:02:59 NZDT, Boom setup on TRH
I decided to use a short boom at the 22m height since we
were missing one long TRH boom. At the 1m height the intercomparison
bar was mounted so the 1m TRH will be attached to this structure. A long
boom will be used here. At this time I do not see the need to change
this boom to a short one. We will see what the intercomparison shows.
- 10: status, Site , Mon 20-Nov-2000 22:58:59 NZDT, today's progress
Today was pretty productive. After conversing with Gordon and Steve O
about some software / sonic issues, I started work on the infrastructure.
At the end of the day, all booms mounted, the adam platform mounted,
the intercomparison boom mounted, and cabling for the 3 upper TRHs done.
I hope to finish all the cable work tomorrow. I still need to run tests
on the NO system so I may be delayed a day before I can deploy.
- 9: adam_field_computer, Site , Mon 20-Nov-2000 20:16:29 NZDT, Change channel assignments
Steve O notice the sampling frequency for the
data was a little slow. He talked to Gordon about it,
and Gordon thought it may have to due with the sonics
being at the end of the serial channel assignments because
those channels got serviced last in the interrupt sequence.
So, I did some changes in the ADAM box and the sonics are
now on 200 and 201. The TRHs are channel 202 thu 207.
Will monitor with data_stats.
- 8: status, Site , Mon 20-Nov-2000 19:49:07 NZDT, TRH and sonic heights
These are the recorded heights for the TRH and sonics
sonic 1 200 3.21 m

TRH 1 202 0. m
TRH 2 203 0.93
TRH 3 204 2.27 m
TRH 4 205 4.84 m
TRH 5 206 10.35 m
TRH 6 207 22.25 m
These measurements have an +/- error of 5 cm, give or take a
meter!
- 7: sonics, Site , Mon 20-Nov-2000 10:55:03 NZDT, sonic status
Steve O and I have been discussing the sonic performance. One sonic
was acting up with sample counts changing. Steve thought we needed to
change the sample window to a longer period. At this time it has not
helped the questionable sonic. I changed it on another one and the sonic
started spiking. I set it back to our original value. For information,
the value changed was the LateLatch (xmt window end). Original value
was 535, new was 575.
- 6: adam_field_computer, Site , Mon 20-Nov-2000 08:29:02 NZDT, Ragwort down for short fix
I took ragwort done to fix channel 207's communication
problem. A jumper was needed on the serial interface board.
- 5: adam_field_computer, Site , Sun 19-Nov-2000 18:57:52 NZDT, ADAM STATUS
The adam has been running for the last 4 to 5 hours without any problems.
All sensors are giving reasonable data. I'll let the system run over night.
There has been one funny response in the ISFFlog.
ragwort ingest socket write to asteroid.33177:Resource temporarily unavailable.
This has been occurring about every 7 to 8 minutes.
A question for Gordon!
- 4: adam_field_computer, Site , Sun 19-Nov-2000 12:10:14 NZDT, system outside
I moved the test outside because the vme box was getting
hot. Will let it run for awhile.
- 3: network, Site , Sun 19-Nov-2000 10:02:24 NZDT, System Checkout
The equipment arrived last night and I work into the sunshine
until late. There were problems with the network link to the data
system. I talked to Gordon early this morning about the problem
and he came up with some ideas that solved the problem. It had to do
with the name for the local host.
There was also a bad optic fiber cable. Kinda dissappointing since they
were recently fixed.
Once the network problems were solved the ADAM came up like it was
meant to. I made the necessary changes to the boot params and everything
worked ok.
I am now in the process of checking the sensors. A problem was found
in the TRH intercomparison cable which will require a change in the
serial channel assignments.
That is all for now.
- 2: base_system, Site , Sun 19-Nov-2000 09:51:09 NZDT, STATUS
A brief report on what has happened up to now.
Delays, delays, and more delays! This project has
been full of delays. It took 2 extra days to get to
the Pole due to bad weather. One extra day in Christchurch
and one in McMurcdo. The flight was long from Christchurch
to McMurdo, about 8 hours and crowded. The flight from McMurdo
to Pole was short, about 3 hours, only 11 people.
Unfortunately, flights were cancelled for the next 2 days so
the equipment did not arrive until last night.
The tower setup should not be too bad except for the weather.
The windchill is a big factor! I talked with the NOAA people
to go over the locations to mount sensors. They had some concerns
about interference with an albiedo measurement. So, decided to
put the sensors on the long side of the tower facing into the
fetch. This was probable the best side anyway.
We are short one long TRH boom. Icommunicated with Steve O. about
