END OF PROJECT SHUTDOWN

Dynamo has come to an end - shutting down system.

The profiler antenna on stabilized platform at 20 inches at X marks,
and 69.5 inches above deck. Platform is drawing 2.45A.

WV GPS WXT is slightly turned to starboard (approx 5 degrees) instead of being aimed directly forward.

Thanks Chris for doing the final shift - great job!

Chris, Bill, Clayton, Tim & Lou are the teardown crew.

Morning was mostly cloudy with every cloud deck noticed. Looks like we are heading into some heavy rain shortly. This morning will be the last launch of the project. Profiler was shut down at 4am. Stabalizer will remain on and display manager and profiler computers will remain on.

00Z - Mostly cloudy. Cirrus, Stratus and Cumulus are out there.

Clear skies this morning.

00Z - Looked like some cumuls/stratus clouds out there somewhere, but crystal clear above boat on launch. Great sounding.

Morning was very pleasent. Full moon and mostly clear. Mostly sunny all day. Spots with Cu but mostly stratus clouds.

00Z - Mostly clear with some cumulus and status around. Good launch
12Z - Mostly sunny with Cu, St around. Temperature error again on from sonde to reference station. Wind is not very strong and with the sun I figured it was due to no aspiration on ref.

166: SURFACE, Site ISS2-Revelle, Tue 07-Feb-2012 12:13:05 GMT, WXT Vs. Sonde Temperature
Yesterday's afternoon launch I was testing the sonde for pre-launch and noticed that the temperatures of the sondes I was preparing was always showing off on temperature. The sonde was showing 3.0C lower in temperature difference. I came to a conclusion today, re-testing the same sondes in the morning (dark) launch that the temps were just fine in comparision. I believe that the sun and calm wind conditions made the WXT warmer due to no ventilation on the unit. Having to say, yes to the sondes readings yesterday do not screw up the sounding in any way in post processing.

This is your weekly update on supplies, conditions of equipment and the general well-being of the wonderful ISS/Revelle gear. Please read with care.

I did a measurement on the profiler (between the 'x') and came up with 20.25". This seems to be were it's the most happiest. I think if I were a profiler, I would want to be in a position of around 20" from center. Its smart. But it looks great inside. Did not have to tell it to clean or organize any of its things and I would definitely not tell it that it's a pigsty. Everyone sounded happy in inside but not too much fun since everything seemed dry.

Doing my walk-a-bout I checked on the gps receiver for the GAUS system and it look great. I like how this is the one antenna that I can actually see looking down on it. The other antenna that I can pretty much get a real up-and-personal relationship with is the GAUS antenna. I see that there is a similarity here on instrumentation that is at 'Chris' Height'. GAUS'! But the antenna looked happy as a clam, if a clam were to be outside without food or water, rusting and strapped to a pole in the sun with no shade. I did clean the window of the camera, but that first attempt was rather shotty. So a second attempt was in order and that one definitely got the gold. Our little camera was very please and thanked me and I was on my way. The two remaining instruments located 02 Deck were seeming to have a little oddness to them. I asked, "Are you getting tired up there?" No response, but I am going to bet that they will be happy that they will be removed in five days. Give them a nice cleaning and put them to bed. They did well and they deserve a good months rest. I did notice when looking over the WXT that it's wind orientation was not a true parallel to the boat, but it told me that they really didn't care about it's allignment and said just over look it and don't ask questions. So here I am, just not going to mention it.
The wonderful walk towards the bow of the boat was a journey in itself. I will not bore you with the details but let's just say it had to do with the blistering sun, the motion of the ocean in combination with looking up. At the time of achieving all these elements, at once, I noticed the sunshine sensor. Gave it a salute and said, "good job", then shuffled off to 01 Deck to inspect the temperature with a great colored, handheld meteorological data system. Holding it up to make sure I can get as close as I can to the sensor I am trying to compare this too and took a reading. What a great day it was on the bow of the boat.
I did walk back to the stern of the boat via the port-side, 01 deck to the quarter deck stairs. I was there in a flash. Did another reading with the handheld precision and took it's numbers into my memory.
At this time I walked to the helium (He) container to count the bottle in which I will not be using this trip. I counted 26 bottles.

In summary:

GAUS things (GPS, antenna): Good
Camera: Good
WXT and GPS Water Vapor: Okay
Sunshine Sensor: Good
He Bottle Count: 26
Sonde Count: 38
Balloon Count: 91
Profiler Position: 20 1/4"

I was bored and did label all the tools with "Integrated Sounding System, National Center for Atmospheric Science".

Cheers!

Pretty morning. Light winds little clouds. Day was mostly sunny with haze. 'Tebowed' the afternoon launch.

00Z - Perfect launch. Lots of stars and calm winds.
12Z - Good 'Tebow' Launch. The reference to sonde window was showing temp off for a few sondes and I finally gave the go due to the WXT was off. The wind is very calm and the sun is out, with no aspiration, I believe the sonde was more correct. With other stations on board, they are all off in comparison.

Just want you to know that it is 75F outside and 65F inside. This lab is quite chilly. Mostly cloudy throughout the day. Wind is coming to our stern now and making the launches very interesting. Hope I don't hit the TOGA radar.

00Z - Raining during launch. I want to say the reason it did not hit the radar on top of the boat is from the exhause pipes of the engines. GPS went out around 300mb
12Z - Sunny during launch. Cumulus and high altitude clouds. Launch was good.

Did some measurements of the profiler to keep track of it's orientation. It has moved back to it's start when Laura's shift was ended. Sunny with fair weather cumulus and some cumulus on the horizon. Rebooted the profiler computer to get the data to sync. Looks like it did but other things are complaining now (NIMA). Day ended up being just gorgeous with fair weather cumulus all around. Nice and puffy clouds all over. Hoping for green flash tonight. Wish me luck.

Day started with the Display Manager computer not working properly. Had the cursor just blinking and nothing loading. The computer finally booted but it's not happy. Gary is looking into the hang-up. Something with back-up failed last night so a reboot was needed which didn't fully happen. Most of the Naigos has been solved but the profiler data. Not worried since Gary G. knows its bad. Day was great weather with sunshine and fair weather cumulus. Turned to some nice rain producing cumulus right at launch time.

00Z - Launch went well. Every star was out this morning. Absolutely gorgeous out. I did terminate the sounding at 100mb-ish just because it looks like the balloon is iced and is slowly decending. I actually still have the balloon communicating to us. It was around 50km away. Impressive.
12Z - The sonde did got right through the exhaust of the boat. Slight rain on launch from an isolated cumulus cloud.

WXT looks great. GPS water vapor antenna looks happy as a clam. Camera is on and running but I didn't clean since it's raining. Will try to remember to do that after a day or so. We are in the cloud/rain band now. GAUS antenna looks a little crooked but not too shabby. I will straighten it when the weather is better. Iridium phone and GPS look great.

They are bringing in the SEA-SOAR sensor during this mornings launch. Deck was crowded but no wind so did not have to bother anyone for this release. Seems really quiet outside. Hard to see sky with all the deck lights on. The bird is on-board and heading over to a NOAA buoy for repair. Fishermen were all over the buoy so we just left w/o repair. Heading to Durban.

00Z - Winds were light this morning. Deck operations were going on during launch. I did fill this balloon with more helium because I was worried about where I was going to release balloon I need to make it go up quickly. The flight did end a little late and I apologize. We have gotten the string of instruments that have been resting on the bottom of the ocean for a few days. The final trolling seemed to have nudged it enough to surface this morning. Morning launch went off an hour late, but got in on time. Still waiting on how much of the line we have left on this buoy anchor to see if afternoon launch is a go.

All 4500m of line was hauled onto the boat this morning. No instruments attached. So we will begin doing SEA-SOAR operations which does not hinder my launch schedule. While ops goes on we move North to the rest of the buoys.

Trolling is over.

139: DAILY, Site ISS2-Revelle, Thu 19-Jan-2012 00:31:52 GMT, Daily 01-19-2012
Pretty much normal day. Even though we had a lot of line out from the ship earlier it all seems to be smooth. Still do not know about the 12Z launch. This all depends on how much of this broken buoy anchor is attached.
Trolling is complete. No instruments and beginning to do SEA-SOAR ops. This will not hinder my launches one bit. Will start to move when the instrumentation is in the water.

00Z - Wahoo! Trolling has stopped (we got it by the way) and I can get to my 00Z launch. I will make sure this is in before 02Z.
12Z - Deck becoming more and more crowded. Three sondes were crap in a row. Successful navigation and fill of balloon through crates and cages and lots of sharp metal objects. Good sounding.

So trolling operations were halted through night time hours. I was able to launch my 00Z sonde but I may not be able to launch the 12Z. I will asses the situation on when trolling with begin and end for today (1/18). We will be trolling today and letting out 10000m of cable to capture these instruments on the ocean floor. Since 10000m of cable will take some time to deploy and I'm allowed on the deck at that point, I will try to get close to my 12Z launch. All weekly checks were done this morning before operations began. Until next time...

...it's official that my 12Z launch is canceled. I may be able to launch one at 10Z but that may be too close to trolling time. This operation will probably go up to my morning launch.

Update: The 12Z launch was good. Since the line is still being placed out into the ocean I had a chance to launch a balloon...well two.

The 00Z for 1/19/12 will be canceled due to trolling if we do not catch anything. I will try to launch as close to 00Z that I can.

Checked the alignment on profiler and it definitely moved from orginal position a week ago. Measuring the gap that Bill showed me on his orginal measurement spot I got a length of 21". That means it moved around 4" so this cruise. I did NOT move it back. I want to see if this is were it's happy and won't move from now on. I may do this check twice a week to keep an eye on it. But it looked great inside the clutter fence. No water, no sounds no cords just hanging there. Just the orientation was off.
Cleaned the lens of the camera and it was pretty dirty. They have been scraping paint off decks and blasting and painting since we took off from Phuket. The 02 Deck is one that has been getting the most repair. WXT and GPS look great. A little rust is happing to both antennas but that is to be expected. GAUS antenna looks great but it's pipe mount is really rusted. I'm not worried about it.

Top of profiler is okay. It seems to have some caulk coming up but nothing more than when at port of Phuket. Side bars are still secure and look good. All ratchet straps are tight and nothing looks out of place.

Sunshine sensor looks happy as a clam up on the mast.

Lots of line and gear on the aft deck and I will be probably filling the balloon here shortly a little bit more so I can launch near helium container. May be the only spot to stand here shortly.

I will go do my weekly chores this morning. I am allowed on deck and will get these complete before trolling operations. Seems that they do not like to troll during dark hours. That is my chance to get things done.

FYI, the lab doors are getting sanded for re-painting. I have been noticing a lof paint dust around benches. I did mention something, but too late. All doors are finished being sanded. Hope amps, computer and racks like a little paint dust. [crossing fingers]

00Z - Launch went great. Perfect conditions. High level clouds and the stars
shining bright.
12Z - First launch seemed to go good until the string didn't deploy all the way. Noticed winds in sounding and it looked horrible. So did a successful re-launch.

I have been shut down from the aft decks till all trolling operations are completed. This operation started before my 00Z launch, but since the line was just being released into the ocean I was aloud on port-aft. Since 7am-ish all decks were closed due to wired being pulled along the bottom of the ocean floor and a good chance of the trolling line to break. The 12Z launch was shut down and I am to remain in lab while this next trolling ops is underway. This is our second attempt and I was not told on how many attempts will be tried until we give up. I guess the ocean-o's are hoping to catch the line so this decision will not have to be made. The last discussion I heard is this could be days.
Until I am told I will remain in lab and do what I can from here (monitor profiler, camera and GPS/water vapor).
I will write an email when I am given the okay from the bridge.
134: DAILY, Site ISS2-Revelle, Mon 16-Jan-2012 23:28:13 GMT, Daily 01-17-2012
The trolling for this last mooring string has begun. They are laying out wire on the bottom of the floor so very limited deck space. Once they start to pull the wire along the bottom, NO one is aloud on deck. They say this should be over by my 12Z launch.
Since they're hauling up trolling line no deck ops is permitted. This includes the 02 Deck. Today was my day to check the profiler and clean camera, so I will push this off till tomorrow.
We are on our second line out to bottom of ocean floor and trolling for the mooring line. My 12Z has been shut down and all of aft decks. Nothing I can do.

00Z - Great launch. Did two launches on at this time. First was doing great till it was about 10' off the deck and battery dropped off. Second launch looks great...I taped the battery on this time.

Today is the first day of two launches. It's going to be hard, but I will try to not go stir crazy. Today was a standing-still-for-a-bit day. Had to get two buoys that were really close to each other. I do want to say that the deck is already getting filled with buoys and balloon filling is going to get interesting. It seems that the rest of the buoy that went floating free is just around us now and we have to troll for the instruments that are probably sitting on the bottom of the floor of the ocean. So I may be launching a few balloons from the same location. Could be days...could.

The charger/battery for the aspirator is starting to act crazy. The LED light is remaining on now. I want to say it got wet and is shorting. I may take it apart but will see what happens when it dries. I'm not the only one that launched in a downpour am I? Charger fixed. Major corrosion everywhere. Tried to clean up as much as I could.
I noticed that the first launch was iced around 600/550mb and looking at the skew-t it is showing it got to 400mb. WTF?

Will be helping the buoy boys bring in our first "free" buoy. Don't worry. I will not my last 12Z launch.

Today was a lot of precip compared to the last few days. Had a down pour that seemed like the ship drove through a wave. POURED. Skies are clearing for the later launch which will make a great sunset.

00Z -Lt. raining on the morning launch. Did not fill balloon too much more than normal. With the flowmeter not working great I am still eyeing the balloon size.
06Z -Great launch. Hazy with upper level cloud coverage. Had a popper this fill.
12Z - Launch went well. Sun is out, but lots of high level clouds while surrounded by cumulus/stratus.

Sunny day today. Hot and humid. Noticed the boat rocking a little more than days before. So the seas a higher today. Clear above us, but nice puffy cumulus around the whole. Going to be a great sunset.

Noticed that we were not pushing data over to the Revelle drive so Kris came in and re-mounted that drive. We are currently shoving data over to catch it up. If we ever reboot this machine we need to re-mount the Revelle drive manually.

00Z-Launched went well. Still problems with flowmeter. No worries. I did not change the date on the file name within GAUS program. It may say Jan 12th.
06Z-Perfect Launch.
12Z-Good launch. No problems.

First day to start profiler and GAUS. The plan is to launch three-a-day until January 15th then go to two-a-day. Both system started great. No problems.

00Z-launch went good but popped a balloon and notice when I came back in that I didn't hit the continue button to start logging the data. So we lost a few hundred feet and I think Aspen hated the launch. Sorry.
06Z-Perfect launch. Flowmeter acting funny.
12Z-Great launch. Damn windy though. Set up system to so I can launch solo. Something is up with the flowmeter. I launched with size and not amount of helium. Balloon was big and flowmeter read 3.0cf. Not correct.

Weather is back up.

It was cloudy for the entire day. Stratus and cumulostratus were the main cloud type. There were interminent squalls with 20 - 25 knot winds and light to moderate rain. A gust front moved through at 5:05 PM LT and ushered in 30 - 35 kt winds, moderate rain, and large swells.

MJO Active Phase is right over Southern DYNAMO Array. Frequent convection is expected. Suppressed phase of westwardly moving Kelvin wave will decrease convection somewhat, but not as big of an impact as first thought. MJO Active Phase will move into maritime continent by Dec 1-2 and a Suppressed MJO Phase settles in. This means there will be a general decrease of convection starting December 2.

There were no temperature and humidity measurements taken since it was cloudy.

One less day to go
As of the 6z launch there will be 248 sondes and 300 balloons left.
All systems are working. Winds are back down to the 2m/s range.
Profiler currents are 1.733 and 2.144.

It was a calm, mostly cloudy day. There was high deck of cirrus with cumulus and cumulus congestus. There were some Cumulus congestus that were able to break through the cap and form into cumulonimubus and convection to the ship's north and west.

MJO still in active phase. Tropical Storm near India moving northwest into Arabian Sea. ITCZ - type convection will return. Suppressed phase of Kelvin wave still expected to destructively interfere wiith Active MJO. As the MJO Active phase moves into the Maritime Continent, the Active phase of the Kelvin Wave will constructively intefere leading to frequent active convection over the Maritime Continent.

Tropical Cyclone centered southwest of india propagating northwest into the Arabian Sea.

MJO Active Phase still present. More frequent and scattered convection exptected but not as much there could be due to the suppressed phase of a westwardly propagating Kelvin Wave. The suppressed phase of the Kelvin Wave is expected to destructively interfere with Active MJO phase.

Some convection developed to the northeast of the ship and slowly propagated southwest at around 5 AM. It weakened before getting to the ship.

There has not been a lot of convection near the ship since we have been on station. This is due to drying in the mid levels (see sondes). The drying is due to the suppressed phase of the MJO. This phase is moving out of the Eastern Indian Ocean. This means a return to "normal" conditions (meaning slightly more frequent convection than what we have been seeing).

Around 550mb sonde went awry sending back erroneous data plots and it resumed at a higher pressure and went back up and then sank for quite a while. It could have been an icing problem, however, we think it was more likely a hard rain problem because the temps reported were only subfreezing briefly and then much warmer temps were reported while it was still sinking. We have let the sonde run it's course and after making it through the rain it seems to be rising and reporting normally.

I've noticed this for the last day or two- it's getting harder to find a spot on the deck where the sonde is happy - late morning to early afternoon. It has been mostly sunny for the last couple of days and the deck seems to be superheating, which drives the sonde temp up and the humidity levels down, so I am experiencing higher temps and lower humidities than the surface met is reporting. I've been moving the sonde to different places (looking for open, breezy, shaded places) but there are difficulties with so much activiy on the deck finding a spot out of the way.

When we made the right hand turn, all of the wind barbs changed from easterlies to Southwesterlies. To investigate this problem, we first turned off the ship speed correction about 06Z. This showed me that the beam at 70 degrees azimuth must be the the x25 beam, while the beam at 160 azimuth must be the y26 beam. I think this is the result of mislabeling on the antenna (I noticed multiple labels on each side). I changed the beam about 11:30Z.

I will see how it works overnight and readjust tomorrow if needed.

DAILY REPORT FOR TUESDAY SEPT 6

En route from Cocos West to right hand turn at 79.5E. Stopped around 0-4 UT (6-10am local time) to service a buoy.

Weather fine, a few cumulus clouds. Seas calm.

Two soundings today. Good 0Z launch. Good 12Z launch

Profiler final current : 1.77A in low mode, 2.16 in high mode.
Stabilized platform drawing 2.19A.

We have noticed a problem in the wind barb processing. It seems to be a ship speed subtraction problem. If you look back through the data you can see the wind barbs reverse directions when the ship stops.

Nearing Cocos on transit cruise.

Weather fine, lots of cumulus cloud this morning but dried out during day
and by evening only a few clouds on the horizon. Seas fairly calm,
perhaps about a meter swell.

Profiler showed brief light rain predawn (about 23Z Sep 3) and deck was a
little wet at dawn when we did the 0Z sounding.

Two soundings today. 0Z sounding lost GPS after launch however did not relaunch
as not an IOP sounding.

Profiler final current : 1.84A in low mode, 2.20 in high mode.
Stabilized platform drawing 2.34A.

Profiler interupted around 16UT for backing up.

Bill's leaving tomorrow morning we arrive at the Cocos and

REVELLE WIND PROFILER SETTINGS

These are the settings I have left the wind profiler in at the Cocos.
The profiler is set with the Y26 side is pointed about 14 deg port of the bow
and inside the clutter screen, it is twisted a further 6 degrees to port
so that the y26 beam is actually pointed at 20 deg to port (ie, at 340 deg).

If the stabilized platform fails and the profiler has to be fixed to the frame
then the y26 beam will go back to 14 deg (ie 346 deg) so the parameter file
should be adjusted.

As of Sept 4 the settings are:

DAILY REPORT FOR SAT SEPT 3

Transit cruise to Cocos continues.

Weather continued fine, easterlies near surface, westeries aloft.
Scattered cumulus clouds, thicker in the morning, partly clearing during day.
Seas fairly calm, although swell increasing in evening.

The ship stopped for some oceanographic testing and mast work for an hour or
so late morning (approx 3UT - 4UT).

Profiler stopped for a system backup 0UT to 1:30UT.
Profiler working well, seeing winds up to about 2km, and in high mode up to
about 4km. Lowest gates winds (below about 500m) contaminated by sea clutter.
Profiler amp current 1.79A in low mode, 2.18A in high mode.
Stablized platform drawing about 2.35A.

Two soundings - launched both with 30 cuft Helium instead of the 35 prev
as winds were light - almost off the stern so launched on port side.
GTS ingest apparently now working. Got sounding profile plotting working so
now plots available on local web page (viewable just by internal ship network).

Surface data flow from ship still not working and ships computer tech
now considering other options instead of UDP port, such as file transfers.

DAILY REPORT FOR FRI SEPT 2ND, 2011

Transit cruise continues.

Weather today, a little thicker scattered cumulus clouds this morning
than yesterday, but they gradually cleared during the day to widely scattered.
Scattered thin cirrus aloft. Sea calm, although a little swell by evening.

Two soundings again today.
The aspirator fan battery was low for the 0Z sounding, although it was still
pulling a slow airflow over the sonde.
The second sounding was delayed for two hours to 14Z by request from Boulder
so that a manual test submission to the GTS could be made.
D and WMO files emailed back to Boulder for this test.
Gary thinks he's fixed the automatic submission and we'll test tomorrow.

As requested by the ship and scientists, a portion of our data stream is
being copied to the ship's science store. The sub-directories of ds being
copied are: class GAUSdata prof915 prof915l prof915h soap_plots webcam

Got the Trimble Water Vapor GTS transfer scripts working, this data is
going into ds/wv_gps

Made changees to profiler soap plotting so that wind barbs appear, and
plots are available to other groups on-board via an internal web page.

Helium container was reconnected by the electrian (they wanted a different
cable run).

Profiler working well although winds at low gates still affected by sea
clutter. Final amp current 2.18A for high mode and 1.79A for low mode.

DAILY REPORT FOR THURS SEP 1

Continued transit in eastern Indian Ocean, sailing westward towards the Cocos.

Weather fine. Widely scattered low marine cumulus clouds, increasing from
morning, then decreasing late afternoon. Soundings show very shallow boundary
layer (approx 500 m). Scattered thin cirrus aloft.
Seas remain calm with light easterly winds (westerly aloft).

Adjusted profiler setting this morning (around 0Z) to increase coherent
integration, and slightly lower the first gate, although still seeing lots of
sea clutter on some beams so might raise it up again.

Weather briefing meeting with skype link back to Boulder. The link worked well,
although it was from a special line in the bridge and cut off internet to
the rest of the ship. The report said MJO very weak and inconsistent over the
next week for two and not much weather is expected.

Profiler amp current 1.79A in low mode and 2.18A in high mode.

Chris Fairall's group got their ceilometer installed and it saw the cumulus
clouds at 500-600m, which is where the profiler sees stronger echoes,
and is consistent with soundings.

12Z sounding lost signal at 200mb for unknnown reasons. GAUS software locked
up so had to ctrl-alt-del to exit.

DAILY REPORT FOR WEDS AUG 31

Continuing on transit in Dynamo cruise 1. Have left Timor Sea and now in the Indian Ocean.

Weather continued fine, clearer than yesterday with just a few widely scattered
cirrus clouds. Light easterly and calm seas.

Two soundings, booth showing very shallow boundary layer and dry air aloft.
0Z sounding briefly appeared in profiler.

Wind profiler seeing fewer echoes thanks to the dry air aloft.
Profiler was down for a period this morning (0-1UT) while testing and changing
parameters to get less sea clutter. The sea clutter was improved, mainly by
raising the lowest gates to 300m, and just using the beams with the least
clutter (using beams at 70 deg and 160 deg wrt to bow).

Ships navigation data to profiler had a few problems, it wasn't changing
from 1-2UT, and the feed was down around 3UT.

Diagnosing ships met data feed problems with help from Gary. Currently
we are entering the data manually into GAUS during sounding prelaunch.

Profiler amp current 1.79A in low mode, 2.18A in high mode.

DAILY REPORT FOR TUES AUGUST 30, 2011

First full day at sea. We are in transit mode which means soundings every
12 hours. First sounding was 0Z (about 0930 local) - Captain Wes came to watch.

Weather fine with light winds and some cirrus. Calm seas.

0Z sounding showed multiple wind shears. 12Z sounding battery cover fell off,
but it kept on transmitting and appeared to be fine.
Both sondes flew to burst (about 50mb).

Profiler running okay, some sea clutter to about 500m, will try adjusting gates
tomorrow. Final amp current 2.66A on high mode, 1.98A on low.

Workspace in the lab rearranged as oceanography equipment was moved.
This meant shutting down the data manager for a couple of hours and briefly
interrupting the profiler. Also radiosonde boxes and other items were shifted
from the Helium container into the main lab.

Ships surface met is being used for sounding surface check. They are still
working on their data loggers so it isn't being ingested into our DM yet,
so we are entering it manually.

Ship fire and liftboat drills held today.

DAILY REPORT FOR AUG 29, 2011

The Revelle was repositioned to the East Arm Wharf last evening for fueling,
and at 1600 local time the Revelle set sail. The wind profiler was turned
on outside the 12 mile limit, although was up and down as adjustments were made.
First sounding will be tomorrow morning.

Weather was fine, warm and a light breeze with a little cirrus.

4: IMPORTANT, Site ISS2-Revelle, Tue 30-Aug-2011 10:44:39 GMT, Revelle Set-up
DYNAMO R/V REVELLE ISS SET-UP
DARWIN, AUSTRALIA
August 19 - 28, 2011

Set-up of ISS2 on the R/V Revelle for DYNAMO in Darwin, Australia.

Wind profiler with stablized platform and clutter fence was assembled at
Port Darwin's East Arm Wharf about 30km from Darwin. It was assembled on
an H-frame mounted on pallets. The pallets enabled it to be lifted by
a large forklift, the H-frame enables it to be craned. Another H-frame is
used as a spacer for the crane, since the bottom H-frame is narrower than
the top of the clutter fence. The system was then trucked to the Fort Hill
wharf in the city where it (minus the pallets) was craned on board the Revelle.
The system includes a tilt sensor mounted on the stablized antenna.
The location on the Revelle is on the aft 02 deck, just forward of the CDT
winches.

A GAUS radiosonde sounding system was installed, with antennas placed on the
aft 02 deck. A container with 145 Helium cylinders is on the main deck.
The ship's met sensors on the bow mast will be used for surface checks.
Soundings will be submitted to the GTS.

A SPN-1 Sun Pyrnometer was installed at the top of the bow mast, next to the
ships shortwave and longwave radiometers. This provides direct and diffuse
solar radiation measurements.

A Trimble GPS Receiver for integrated water vapor measurements, with an
accompanying WXT520 weather sensor, was installed on the aft 02 deck
(receiver in a weather box, antennas and WXT on the aft 02 deck mast).

A webcam was mounted on the railing of the CDT winch boom above the aft
02 deck (starboard side - pointed aft, upwards, and slightly starboard)
to monitor clouds.

The computers, receiver racks, stabilized platform controller, GAUS rack and
other items were installed in the main lab. The data manager computer will
be uploading a minalist data set back to Boulder every hour, about 10 minutes
past the hour. The internet connection is very slow and intermittant so
delays and missing data are expected.

The set-up crew was Bill Brown, Lou Verstraete, Steve Semmer, Gary Granger,
Brad Lindseth, and Jen Standridge.
The first crew on the Revelle are Bill Brown and student Darek Baranowski,
and they will be completing the final few set-up items and tidying up on
the inital one-week leg to the Cocos Islands.
