Downloaded data. The config at this station had a typo
so the metppf files were not being written since day 302, Oct 29.

  Finished 10:20

Kurt and Carl arrived shortly thereafter and we proceeded to
get the Penske truck stuck. With the help of some local guys
we got it out after an hour+.

  Station 80% dismantled by 12:40

Downloaded data. Date at this station is still wrong (one day early)!
When I corrected this a few days ago I only changed the system date
and not the GOES date, so it must have reverted back to the GOES date.
    Fixed again.

Station 4 Investigated the microbarometer's reponse to the different "12 VDC"
          PAM battery = 13.8 VDC microbarom response = ~ 6 VDC
          Licor battery = 12 VDC microbarom response = ~ 1.3 VDC
Hence we gave up on PAM power and attached the recharged Licor battery

      Tightened all rain guage connections

Prop boom 000.5 degrees (Tony), 177.0 degrees (Gordon)
Sonic boom 90.2 degrees (Tony), 90.0 degrees (Gordon)

Station 3 Removed dead microbarom battery and replaced with charged battery

Cleaned radiometers and performed shadow test 1345 - 1400

Prop boom = 180 degrees (Gordon)
Sonic boom = 89 degrees (Gordon)

Station 6 INSTALLED BAROMETER GORDON

Prop boom = 3.8 degrees (Tony)

160: Barometer, Site all, Thu 30-Oct-2003 10:16:33 EST, barometers
Two vaisala PMB220 barometers, U4110004 and NCAR0003 have
failed during this project.

They will work if one sets an internal dip switch to
"use factory defaults". Switch bank S1,
SW8=ON=factory defaults,  OFF=user settings.
The barometers do not work if set to OFF=user settings.

The factory defaults for the serial port are 9600,even,7.

My plan for using these barometers is to install them
on stations that are configured for the barometer
on a serial port (choose from 1,4,5,7,8), and change
the serial port config from none,8 to even,7.

The current stations without a barometer are 6 and 9.

So the plan is to put U4110004 at station 1, and take
whatever barometer that was at 1 to station 9.

Then put NCAR0003 at station 4 and take 4's barometer to 6.

159: Site_visit, Site 1, Thu 30-Oct-2003 09:42:53 EST, Visit Stations 1, 9, and 4
10/29/03

Station 1
Removed vaisala barometer U4110004, replaced it with
S0610002. Changed barometer serial port to parity=even,
7 data bits in fmt0164. Seen logbook entry #160 for info
   about the barometers.

All Campbell connection associated with the rainguage as well as the
rain guage connections were tightened. Tip response on logger checked

Station 9

Installed barometer U4110004. It worked, but then the TRH and
AD would not transmit on the SBUS (prop continued to work).
Swapped the internal RS485 circuit board from unit NCAR0003,
and then all sensors were happy.

All Campbell .................................. on logger checked.
The microbarometer dead battery was replaced with a freshly charged one
The datascope was calibrated sucessfully ans a magnetic declination of
     14 west was entered.
Prop boom: 354.0 degrees (Tony) 352.6 degrees (Gordon)
Sonic boom: 86.6 degrees (Tony) 87.0 degrees (Gordon)

Station 4

Removed barometer S0610003 (in order to move it at 6).
Installed NCAR0003 (parity=even,7 bits) (without an
    internal RS485 circuit board.

The barometer air hose was not connected at this station!

System date was wrong on this station, it was reporting 10/28.
Looking at the minicom logs, I found I (Gordon) had set it
incorrectly on Oct 24. The incorrect date does not
effect the GOES data (NESDIS sets the time tag), but it
does effect the local metppf files and the high rate data.

I have corrected the metppf files - still need to do the
    high rate data.

All Campbell .................................... on logger checked.
The microbarometer dead battery was removed. A direct "12 VDC" linkage
from the PAM battery resulted in an "over maximum" voltage output to
the AD. The attempt to power the micobarometer was abandoned.

Visit times
 Station 1 arrived 1240 left 1340
 Station 9 arrived 1406 left 1515
 Station 4 arrived 1604 left ~1730

SDR Data: Inserted new CF and verified that it was working OK.

EVE problem: on 10/21 at 0Z the RAMDISK DIR. STRUCT. FAILED!
This was shown evidenced on syslog.log and on console
	screen in 'failure to access'.
At that point any 'dir' or 'dir /card' failed,
DAQ fortunately was running, including sdr output (when good media!).
'REBOOT' RECOVERED full ops and the directory structure was
	actually OK.

Thoughts:
Second/third time this has been seen: systems getting older
	which is a problem, however:
1) EVE code must be examined closely for this problem (ie interrupt
contention on disk access, etc.) and auto recovery procedures.
2) DCOM332 boards must be fully exercized and tested, possibly checked
by manuf. as well. Using 'in-house' software, temp, etc.

SDR Fast Data Outage From 10/14 to 10/20:

The upload of the 'sdr fastdata' compact flash recovered on
10/20 failed. After several checks, including back on a 'sdr'
we found: The MEDIA Itself FAILED !!!

Sandisk 06/03-3 had been used extensively during pre-proj tests
however this indicates 2 things:
1) During project:	While servicing and esp. when inserting
a blank media, make sure data is being written successfully
by watching file sizes grow. (problem appeared in dir part.)
I didn't do that on st2 on 10/14 and the Tern dutifully created
file and happily chugged away even though the CF itself wasn't
   recording.
2) After project:	Perform CF life cycle testing to better
   anticipate replacement schedule.

DCOM332 - EVE problem?
after 'starting' when replacing goesid (ie from s05_0110.xmt
to s05_0120.xmt) the bootup failed claiming:
	'unable to open krypton.dat'
even though it was there. Played around a bit and had
to perform a 'reboot' using the hard-pulled reset line low.
	That worked.

	 St4 14:30-15:15

TRH Noise Problem Note:

Note: This noise apparently doesn't appear on the RH, only
	the resistive T transducer.

St1:10/17 we moved the yaggi antenna to the West leg.
This may have reduced the noise on the Trh.
10/18 we tried for giggles putting a ground
wire from the shield tube up to the main housing
to see if that would help.
Looking at data messages on the PC, we did not
	see the noise.

St4:10/18 This station had been setup with a microStrip (ie
broader beam width than yaggi) on the west leg.
We confirmed that was OK for preventing noise on
the microBaro, but it clearly had the worst noise
of all stations on the Trh.
We tried the 'funky ground wire on the shield' and
per observing the data messages on the PC, that clearly
	did not fix the problem.....bummer.
We moved the antenna roughly to the SW by about 3m and
	that fixed it.

Result:	Improvement in shielding of TRH needed (further tests in
Boulder to help determine best method)
Greater awareness in placement of GOES antennas to avoid
problem esp. in user sensors. Thank goodness it
didn't effect the turbulent flux csat/h2o, etc.
134: Rain, Site 1, Sun 19-Oct-2003 09:05:41 EDT, st1: RG check
10/18/03 13:05-13:40

Purpose: check RG which appeared to have 'delayed tips' in
comparison with other stations.

RG was clean and seemed alright.
	Performed tip-test at a 'fast-rate':
	13:20 = 59 tips
	13:25 = 27 tips
total = 86 out of 100: ie very low although I did
have it running so fast that this undershoot was
	clearly related to splashing.
Basic point is RG is working.

The night 16 - 17 Oct was clear but no frost.

All Station Up and Reporting

Note: we've moved all antennas at 'user-sensor' stations and those
sensors have greatly improved by brief looks through the data for ea.
However, the NCAR-T data is still effected in most cases. One of
the worst is st4 where I put the microstrip antenna on the west leg
during setup. That meant that the microBaro there never really has
had the noise problem, but the T definitely has it very clearly.
From quick looks at RH, that capacitive transducer doesn't seem
	effected.
Result: during post processing, all T data should perhaps be re-cov'd
with the data during xmit removed. That shouldn't change the means
	by very much (~.0x deg).
Secondly we need to improve the transducer's shielding.....

During bootup on 10/7 (last visit) the ramdisk appeared to be
purged however the reported file-stat call indicated not enough

10/14/03 15:40-16:30, and 16:55-17:25

CO2/O3,etc Noise Problem: (see also entry 118)
The occurance of 5 min noise spikes in the AD data for this station indicated
 GOES RF interference.
The Yagi antenna was relocated from the SE leg of the PAM tripod to the W leg
and then aligned to the original azimuth and tilt pointing.

CO2 Cal Tables:
The CO2 sensor data had been showing steps as the calibration switched between
different calibratin tables when the temperature hovers around 10-degC.
SteveO thought it would be useful to change the temp. threshold value to
keep the unit from switching tables:
>st	stop unit
>tr0 29500 3080 0 0 0.7479	original values
>tr1 23000 2830 1 1 0.9035
>tr2 15300 2630 2 2 1.0590
Per SO changed tr0 from 3080 (ie 308degK) to 3280 and restarted.
Later returned per SO to change tr1 which he thought more appropriate.
That was put to 3030 (ie 303degK) however when doing that the unit would
not 'go' again, apparently due to inability to hit this temp. on the chiller.
Final Result:	Returned tr0 and tr1 to original values so it'll work!

118: Site_visit, Site 2, Mon 13-Oct-2003 17:16:12 EDT, St2: Swap SOAD 'plate' (had noise during 'goes')
10/13/03 15:20-16:10 local

Purpose was to investigate Data glitch on AD during Xmit.
Suspected that the SOAD had the 'single-ended' jumper still on the
board but that was not the case.

'Serializer/AD' plates swapped 5 times between 15:20 and 15:30, while watching
data on PC.

At 15:45 spare replacement plate installed and fast data accumulated
for 20 minutes before being downloaded for exam back at base.
NOTE: at one point we observed microbaro voltage reported at 180mV but with
spare plate installed it was reporting at 1180mV....This could have
been due to the ad cable being plugged in slightly incorrectly when
we were using the original 'plate'.
NOTE: We did observe the 1180mV jump up by 5mV during xmit, however, this
is far less than what was seen in the fastout data (I think).....
wrong!...a check of the 'caled' data back at the base shows
that the step is still there. It equals about .1mB but is
	very clear in the data.
NOTE: The CO2 pump audibly changes during xmit, indicating reduced airflow
perhaps and that could account for the increased 5mV signal ....maybe?
We should check where the pump is plugged in and
maybe try an 'independent' battery for it.
NOTE: The noise is also on O3, Vbatt, Tbatt but not Tsfc.
This implies location adjacent to the antenna is the culprit.
St2 has a yaggi located on the SE leg, immediately in line with
the microbaro, O3, etc. Cable shielding is the other possibility
and I don't know if SUNY put the shield on or not.

Site 1 visit, Oct 8, SPO
Purpose: install format 164; test baro; fix krypton signal
Arrived ~1100 EDT

Tested voltage response of baro by disconnecting solar/aux batteries.
When Vbatt<12.9V, no response to polling (on separate port 6).
Changed to fmt0164.dat; initially failed AD with too many %d -- fixed.
New format still has voltage problem for baro -- reconnected panels&batteries.

Swapped serializer to try to fix krypton -- no change.
Swapped Tsfc&Krypton to test if krypton voltage/serializer okay.
Krypton was fine.
Found blown fuse on front panel -- replaced -- now krypton works! But...
when Tsfc reconnected to SOAD channel 5 now reads 250C (offscale).
Swapped back with krypton. Krypton ok on SOAD chan 5 and Tsfc ok on serializer!
(But not the reverse.)
Tried Tsfc on SOAD chan 6 -- works! Something is strange (now) with either
front panel or pigtail cable for chan 5 -- it had been working before this
service visit :(
Since this already used a unique config, changed fmt0164 to accept Tsfc on
chan 6, defined "Junk" on chan 5. Now things work.

Departed ~1300 [two hours to change a format and replace a blown fuse :( ]

Conclusion:
- This baro (1003?) is the worst -- it doesn't like Vbatt<12.9V on either
SBus or port 6.
- The krypton that we pulled from this site a few days ago (1101) might be okay
(despite giving no voltage in the trailer -- perhaps still a fuse problem?)
- The serializer that I just swapped probably is okay as well.
- Changing to format 164 was good, but didn't affect station operation.

Tom will add a more complete entry about our visit today to s3.
I just wanted to make a note to the tear-down crew that we just
(accidentally, of course) dropped a jeweler's screwdriver down the
leg where the GOES antenna is mounted (SE?) and, for obvious reasons
couldn't get it out. Sorry.

Still do not have DSL service at the base. Talked with Verizon yesterday
and (under pressure) they were hopeful in a day or two. Meanwhile took
ASTER to Residence Inn. There connected to internet, but Gordon could
not access aster apparently due to firewall at ISP. Will try same at
SUNY today.

Kurt visited stations 7 and 1 yesterday. He got 7 back on the air by a
"laying on of the hands", then did normal service at 7 and 1 before
returning to the base. I looked at the data tables on the web page
yesterday afternoon and this morning. All looks good except KH2O this
morning due to rain.

With Gordon's prompting, I changed the KH2O s/n's at stations 5,7,8,9
in prep.config to coincide with those actually mounted on the stations.
The original s/n's in prep.config were in numerical order, but they
weren't all deployed that way.

33: EVE, Site all, Fri 12-Sep-2003 16:30:40 EDT, Note on Formats per Suny O3/CO2/MicroBaros
Per Dave Fitzgerald,
Suny will install their sensors (someday) as follows:
(hopefully they'll be able to test them in the base trailer
using the 'testbed' eve system so we won't need another config change later)

O3:	2,3,9 via SOAD-6
MicBaro	2,3,4,6,8,9	via SOAD-5
CO2:	2,3,6,9 via EVE-tyCo/6, requires baro on Sbus

Polling Rate of Sensors:
SOAD 1hz with O3,microBaro to allow 'flux estimation'
This capability was tested on several boxes during setup
	and it work well.
CO2 reporting at 1hz. Tested in Boulder
Only problem will be where PTB220's need to be re-arranged
because some don't work on sbus: specifically for box #9.

This will require config adjustments from initial settings:
Formats were edited on 9/11 as follows:

160:	has 4-comp, CO2, microB, O3, PTB220baro on Sbus
	loads: hvamlogr.all
	1hz polling of SOAD
slight change from before to put the microBaro on AD-5 and O3 on AD-6.

161:	has none of the above. no change, PTB220baro by itself on tyCo/6
	loads: hvamlogr.few
	.2hz polling of SOAD

162:	has CO2, microB, O3, PTB220baro on Sbus
	loads: hvamlogr.few
	1hz polling of SOAD
revised from before of channels on SOAD, adding O3

163:	has MicroB, PTB220baro by itself on tyCo/6
	loads: hvamlogr.few
	1hz polling of SOAD

28: Sonics, Site all, Fri 12-Sep-2003 16:06:10 EDT, Sonic Heights
Per Dave Fitzgerald / Jeff Friedman:

All Sonics were setup at 7m with booms pointing toward the West.
All Kryptons were mounted vertically 30cm back from the sampling volume.
27: Sonics, Site 9, Fri 12-Sep-2003 14:46:14 EDT, Csat has 'thread' on transducers
Site 9 has a fine cotton thread strand crossing over the up-looking transducers
that SteveO used during testing in Boulder.
This may help improve the csat recovery time in rain if the water is wicked away.

Notes:
  Basic Site Layout:
CSAT height 7m at all Stations
orientation boom pointing toward the west
Rad-Sawhores	~10m to SE of main tower
PV stands	~10m to NE of main tower

St2	CS615-002 BAD at setup. PspIn bad at setup.
  St3	GPS coordinates provided by Suny off: actual = 41.52988, -73.54881 per SE1200 GOES/GPS
St4	Rnet In s/n 10835 installed but values in TD log entry indicate cal for 7122 which
was also shown for st7....The cal values in the logger are same as what's shown
in TD logbook entry, so we think there was a typo on the id number in that log entry!?
St5	Kh2o 1394 installed after setup on 9/7 ~23:45Z after base arrived and spare mounting
	collars were available.
Site layout compromized by being on a slope in apple orchard.
Very rocky ground: sand-bagged main tower to secure it.
St6	Did not complete site photos on setup: camera batteries died.
Site layout compromized a bit by corn field, etc.

St8	HFT 943149 BAD at setup, probably bad cable or sensor, spare sent from Boulder
RMY needs ZN and BDxxx set although the 'ZN' was supposedly done for all in Boulder
and the nominal BD000 should be 'in-ballpark
St9	See other logbook entry: thread on csat transducers per SO testing in Boulder.
	Tsfc 3577-4 BAD at setup.

5: Base, Site base, Fri 25-Jul-2003 12:14:00 MDT, HVAMS03 scripts for plotting data
These scripts are found on
$PAM/projects/HVAMS03/scripts.

If data is not being plotted, check the log files for errors.

process_check hvams03_web

process_check is run from Gordon's crontab on syrah, at xx:28 and xx:58
every hour. It simply checks that the script hvams03_web is
running, and if not, starts it.

  hvams03_web

    Loops forever, theoretically..
At 5 minutes after the hour it runs the following:

      html_logbook
      hvams03_webplots

    logfile: $PAM/projects/$PROJECT/logs/hvams03_web.log

To change the loop period of this script, edit it and update the
runperiod, and runoffset variables. You will then have to kill
it from the maclean account on mead:
	kill -TERM pid
The next time process_check runs it will be restarted.

    html_logbook
copies the logbook to the HVAMS03 web pages

    hvams03_webplots
This script is run from hvams03_web. If the
local time is between 06:00 and 23:00 it runs:
	webplots today
        qctables today
to make the current day's web plots.

If the local time is after 06:00 and before 13:00 it updates
      yesterday's web plots:
         webplots yesterday
         qctables today

If the local time is after 13:00 it makes the
final version of yesterday's web plots:
        webplots yesterday
        qctables yesterday

      webplots
Runs Splus to make a slew of plots, which are placed on the HVAMS
        web pages in .png form.
        Logfile: $PAM/projects/HVAMS03/slogs/webplots_YYYYMMDD

      qctables
Makes the html tables, giving mean, stdev, etc for each variable.

4: Base, Site base, Fri 25-Jul-2003 11:05:36 MDT, HVAMS03 scripts for fetching data

These scripts are found on either $PAM/scripts, or
$PAM/projects/HVAMS03/scripts.

If data is not arriving, check the log files for errors.

process_check hvams03_daps

process_check is run from Gordon's crontab on mead, at xx:25 and xx:55
every hour. It simply checks that the script hvams03_daps is
running, and if not, starts it.

  hvams03_daps

    Loops forever, in theory.
At XX:00:04 and XX:30:04 after the hour it runs
     $PAM/scripts/dodaps, which fetches
data from DAPS, and writes Netcdf files on $PAM/projects/HVAMS03/netcdf.
    logfile: $PAM/projects/$PROJECT/logs/hvams03_daps.log

To change the loop period of this script, edit it and update the
runperiod, and runoffset variables. You will then have to kill it
from the maclean account on mead:
	kill -TERM pid
The next time process_check runs it will be restarted.

    dodaps -N mead
This script is run from hvams03_daps. It runs $PAM/scripts/getdaps
to fetch data for the PAM platforms, writes the data packets to
$PAM/projects/HVAMS03/packets/nesdis, and converts the data to netcdf
      form.
      logfile: $PAM/projects/HVAMS03/dapslogs/isfflog/YYMMDD.log

      getdaps
        Run from $PAM/scripts/dodaps
telnets to the DAPS server, and uses expect program to interact
with server and download data packets.
        logfile: $PAM/projects/HVAMS03/dapslogs/YYMMDD.log
        daps telnet session logs:
          successfull daps telnet sessions:

After all 18 pyrgeometers had been exposed to the NOAA Black Body
they were returned to the cal-lab on Fri 20 Jun.
On Tues 24 Jun Lou' four were returned to his lab and all 14 of our's
were opened and the jumpers reinserted.
NB 29137 had been modified such that the Case temp is now defined by the
compensation circuit's case thermister.
